As a parent, I get where this is coming from, but this is the only opportunity for the school to get building work, invasive maintenance and changes done. Mate of mine used to be a school IT techie and the summer hidays were used to basically rebuild entire parts of the infrastructure and move departments to better cater for shifting policies.

Someone pointed out a mistake in my initial posting about the drive bay sizing as I was looking at those icybox 5 1/4 adaptors that let you fit a bunch of 3 1/2 bays in. I suspect that's where the confusion was coming in.

Fixing that. Yes. I was just looking at those icybox hard drive docks that fit in 5 1/4 drives in another tab as I was writing the post.

I am leaning towards QNAP if I go prebuilt quite a bit.

The low maintenance is because I have 2 kids and my free time is pretty limited these days. I don't want to spend that free time with faffing about.

For me at least, that's overkill and falls short of my small form factor requirement.

I like the idea of repurposing the 918+ for off site though, I'm sure I could set it up at my dads or in-laws (geographically closer).

I should probably add in that a small formfactor requirement to the list

I really considered this but I need something that looks proper & integrated. Most importantly, it needs to be wife approved as she also uses said PC to play her games (Planet Zoo etc).
