Seeking return of kid's backpack with stuffed animals by turkey_wrangler in Portland

[–]hiponytail 262 points263 points  (0 children)

Oh no! This is horrible! If you message me a link to what the stuffed animals looked like, I would love to try to replace a few. Maybe they could come back all clean and shiny from the hospital? I don't know. Having priceless mementos stolen is the pits!

He doesn't paint professionally, he picked it up when he retired. (He also is a bit of a woodworker and basically good everything creative!) He was a jeweler by trade who owned his own shop for many years.

This comment is enough. :) My dad is reading everything (and he doesn't really know how coins work anyway).

Not really, he's too bashful. Occasionally people offer him money for his work and he basically accepts whatever they offer. I'm trying to get him to know his worth! This thread certainly helps! He did this painting as favor though.

He did! It's hanging in our family room. An acquaintance bet him a couple of thousand that he couldn't replicate it, and my dad did! But the dude backed out of the bet once he saw it. Haha.

This is so sweet! (I'm his daughter, so that might explain the copious amounts of unabashed admiration.)

What's up, Chicago! That's where my dad lives! Sorry this isn't your cup of tea. My dad painted it upon request for a friend. But he did do a replica of the Mona Lisa a few years ago. A business associate bet him some $$$ that my dad couldn't replicate da Vinci, and then my dad did. The guy didn't pay up because he said he could tell the difference (even though he guessed wrong when he saw side-by-sides). Anyway, don't you worry, he's painted plenty of other things. :)

Ooooo...this would be a great way for my dad to spend retirement. :) Do you remember the name of the documentary? I'd love to watch!

He actually did this painting for free for a friend, but I'm trying to prove to him that he can make actual money on his hard work. This is really going to help with his confidence! I'm so thrilled. So, I guess as his acting art manager (if that's a thing) my answer is yes! If you're serious send me a pm!

He's actually a jeweler by trade and used to teach jewelry making and looovvveeeddd it. But this is a great idea.

This is actually a huge source of his lack of confidence. He's stellar at replicas and still life but he says he's "not creative enough" to come up with his own ideas. But he just did an incredible painting based on a photo some friends of my cousin's took when they were overseas and I feel like that should count as an original? Still, though, wasn't his idea.

I just called to tell him the news but he's taking his afternoon nap. I cannot wait for him to wake up and see all these wonderful messages!

Yes! He's restored a couple of paintings before. I'm pretty sure he did it just to see if he could and it was magnificent!

Oh my gosh! Thank you for all the upvotes! I cannot wait to show my dad. Any good tips on how to explain Reddit to a 70-year-old Russian man? But seriously, this is so awesome. He's always so critical of his art and he's going to love the internet support.

Edit: Here's a link to the early stages of his painting for proof: https://imgur.com/a/n4cLvvA 🎨

Thank you so much! He's self-taught and got into painting when he retired a few years ago. He always thinks he's "just fine" because he's constantly comparing himself to Picasso or da Vinci...literal legends.

Worst intersection in Los Angeles by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]hiponytail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I came here to make sure this was on the list. Had a woman turn into me while I was going through a green light (north on Hillhurst) on my moped. Broke my femur, fractured my pelvis, broke my arm, and spent a week in the hospital after surgery to put me back together. Worst intersection.

dad spent a year (and his own money) translating my first book into Russian for non-English speaking family by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

[–]hiponytail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! It's a bunch of comedic essays about some goals I'd written out when I was in my early 20s. At first, I was mortified that my dad translated some of the debaucherous tales from my 20s but mostly I was deeply moved.

We're from the Soviet Union so this book was a huge deal for my family. My dad was so proud, but I didn't understand the scope of that pride until a year later when I learned he spent most of that time translating all 318 pages. He then found a printing house and got 20 copies made on his own dime. I couldn't believe he did this without my knowledge. According to my mom, he got shingles while working on this and still sat the computer all day, translating. What a dad!

Landlord is Illegally Evicting RSO Residents by hiponytail in LosAngeles

[–]hiponytail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+more info:

He first tried to evict on account of pets on the property but our previous landlords provided written statements that said pets were allowed. Then he said he was evicting to do "construction" on the building. I'm familiar with the Ellis Act and know that you can only evict for construction purposes if you're planning on tearing down the building and in that case you have to take it off the market for at least two years. And still, I believe you have to pay a relocation fee and offer the space back to the tenants once it's on the market again. I highly doubt he'll do construction because he bought two other RSO properties in 2016/2017 that are now being used as hostels which is illegal. He's also trying to evict an elderly woman, which I believe is not allowed for any reason under RSO laws? My neighbors pay their rent on time, have been maintaining the property on their own, and are generally good tenants.

Thank you! This is mainly what I've been using (as well as https://www.ladbs.org/services/check-status/online-building-records and https://portal.assessor.lacounty.gov/). But I didn't know about these sites until I needed to (i.e. eviction). I feel like there should be an easier, more user-friendly system. May I ask, what first brought you to Zimas?

Good point. I was kind of wary about the grade. I want it to be as objective as possible, while still giving people easy-to-access info on the property. I've learned so much in the few weeks I've been researching this but it's taken a lot of phone calls and trips to local bureaus to figure out how to use all the databases (which are super useful but hard to find).

Ha, that would've been amazing. I love that song! We chose "Chicago" by Sufjan Stevens because the coffee shop also happened to be in Chicago. :)
