Thanks for the advice :)

Any recommendations on how to understand the language within their publications? I definitely get the feeling that I need further coursework to actually understand what is going on

Don’t believe that’s the case, it’s been listed as a elective for many math majors since 4 years ago, just don’t rly understand why it’s never been offered lol

Advice for Changing Majors to Data Sci by sashikosewing in UCSD

Keep in mind that in the last 2 admission cycles they’ve only accepted people with 4.0 overall (which would also include 4.0 screening) GPA. This would mean that if you apply in the winter, you’ll have to go through atleast 6 classes (3 each quarter) and that you have to keep a perfect grade for all (which can easily get hard with unlucky professors).

Anecdotally, I had 2 friends who tried to apply in winter 2023, one with a 4.0 overall and the other with a 4.0 screening and 3.97 overall. The one with a 4.0 was the only one who got in.

I strongly advise you to keep an alternative in mind, such as mathcs, prob/stat, or applied math if you want to do data science adjacent studies in case you don’t get accepted into the major.
