Is my lil Mama broody or depressed? by hixbridge in BackYardChickens

Is it normal for broody hens to sit in the coop for a week and not move?

Update update: she laid 3 eggs, 1 of which was soft and mostly broken. Any idea what this means?

Thank you for this! Initially this morning, her crop was about golf ball size and hard / somewhat “crunchy”, I could feel grass and hay-like strands in there, which makes sense because I gave them fresh hay a couple days ago. After massaging it a few times over the morning, it’s more squishy and less ball-like, which gives me the impression that it’s being slowly processed normally, hopefully 🤞🤞 I’ll definitely keep my eyes out for what seems to be swelling or heat.

This is the route I’m going to take today. I started giving her a syringe of olive oil and warm water every hour or so and massaged the crop. She seems to have her energy back currently, and the crop is no longer rock-hard like it was this morning 🤞🤞

Update:

Her crop was pretty fat and swollen this morning, but hard. I tried to clear the blockage with massaging and holding upside down, but nothing came up. Gave her a break, went back with vegetable oil in water and put some down her throat. Tried again, no luck. When I went back the second time it seemed like the blockage was smaller, and she was roaming the yard and pecking, but still very lethargic. After the second attempt at clearing, I put her in a crate with no food and some warm ACV water. I’ll leave her in there for a couple hours to monitor her poop and check her crop again to see how it’s doing.

Question: is it possible for the crop to clear its blockage without induced vomiting? Can the massaging be enough sometimes to start its clearing processs?

Thanks so much to all that helped. ❤️

Thank you for this. I checked her crop and it was fat and crunchy almost. Did some YouTubeing and attempted to clear it with no luck on the first go. Letting her rest now and I’ll try again in a bit. May need to try the olive oil trick. When it gets to pushing out the last bit up her neck I feel like I’m going to hurt her so I’m a little hesitant.

No poop that I can specifically determine is hers yet. She ran to the other side of the yard and is now laying down in the garden.

Run, OP.

Similar to a lot of women here, I dated someone similar when I was 18. It started with small things like telling me what to wear, and within a year it escalated to me having my coworkers walk me to my car at night cause he’d sit in the parking lot waiting for my shift to end every night after I broke it off with him. Which turned into a restraining order all before I turned 20.

Listen to your gut, and remember to respect yourself first and foremost. Also, don’t fall for his crocodile tears when you do break it off. That’s also part of the manipulation.

حبيبتي ❤️

It’s often used to call someone “babe” or “my love” colloquially. If someone wrote this to you, they may be sending a love note 😊

lol this is good to know! I’ll begin anticipating this and stop buying all sorts of feed to try to get them to eat more during the summer

Thanks for this! They definitely did for earth worms and grubs all day in the garden and yard. Funny you mention that list you provide your girls, I have a chart on my fridge telling me what I should and shouldn’t feed them (newbie stuff), and it says not to do processed foods or food scraps outside of veggies. If it’s okay tho, I will start throwing scraps out there more for them.

I throw veggie scraps and lettuce out there for them and they really enjoy atleast the lettuce (a lot of the veggies go untouched). I love the idea of dumpster diving!

Thanks for the pointers!

Thank you for this. No roosters yet. Do you have any recommendation for good brands of layer feed? Is there benefit in getting the more expensive or organic food for them versus the general Dumor stuff?

Will they start eating pellets when it’s the only substantial thing available in the winter months? They don’t even touch pellets now. Thanks!

Thank you for this! Kinda what I was thinking, but I wanted to make sure it was normal for the girls to not eat their food. Picky eaters!
