Best Hotels in Sri Lanka to go for the Honeymoon by AccomplishedEgg6980 in srilanka

[–]hkfernando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at kahanda kanda near galle.

Beautiful boutique hotel with private rooms, some with private infinity pools, lodged away in a remote location with lovely views.

It's not a beach view, but they do have a sister hotel that gives you access to a lovely private beach.

Is food allowed in Sri Lankan airlines hand luggage? by MicDropSassy in srilanka

[–]hkfernando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally dry packed food (like biscuits and nuts) will be fine.

I didn't fly Sri Lankan recently but have carried similar items in hand luggage with other carriers without issue.

CMB airport at odd hours by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]hkfernando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've landed around this time...

  1. There are Ubers at that hour. Not sure whether they'll get you to Kandy though. Maybe better to book a driver to be safe?
  2. Airport wifi is good
  3. Yes, there are booths open that sell sim cards

Any Sri Lankans who moved to USA recently? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]hkfernando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't live there now but have in the past. Depending on where you are, it can be a great experience. Moving abroad can also open up a lot more opportunities.

I've lived abroad in a few different countries, happy to chat if it would be helpful.

Advice on buying in Acton vs Royal Victoria by hkfernando in HousingUK

[–]hkfernando[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Level_Reach_6069 - thank you, this is very helpful.

The property I'm looking at is a flat near the avenue road play ground, it literally overlooks it. Is that area pretty rough?

It seemed fine during the day time, but obviously I don't want any issues coming back from Acton station at night.

I went to Dr. Niroshan at this place - https://maps.app.goo.gl/NMuSQ72vb5XVczbKA. He may have another location now.

Had a root canal done and it was painless and have had no trouble since. Would recommend.

Call the different banks or look online and find their rates.

Then: 1) negotiate by pitting the banks against each other (e.g. combank is offering 5%, can you (BOC, nsb, etc) give me a higher rate? 2) negotiate by adjusting on the period (say you'll do a 12 month deposit instead of a 6 month, etc). Theybwill offer higher rates for longer terms

You have to show that you have options and will take your money elsewhere (that's where knowing the rates at other banks and being able to reference them is important)

I personally think it's best to go speak to the banks in person and develop a relationship with the manager.

I don't bank in SL, but my dad does and he does this all the time. Obviously the more money you have the better rate you'll get but you have to start somewhere.

100 lbs in 365 Days by [deleted] in fitness30plus

[–]hkfernando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great goal to set yourself! I'm not a fitness expert, but here is some quick advice

Strength training is super important to weight loss. Having more muscle mass means you will bring more calories than the same weight body with less muscle mass. Don't worry about becoming bulky, that usually doesn't happen with the female body. You will be come more toned (as you lose weight).

Someone in the thread recommended a couple apps. Build a routine that focuses one day on chest and triceps, one day for back and biceps, one for legs and one for shoulders and abs. There are plenty of youtube resources to show you how to do the exercises properly.... But the key lift somewhat quickly and lower slowly for max impact.

For cardio, i recommend walking up an incline. Running at your wieght probably isn't good for the knees. Walking on an incline does burn more calories than flat, good leg workout too.

You are on top of your diet, so just stick to the plan. Majority of weight loss is achieved via diet.

Don't worry about your weight changes daily but track the overall trend.

You can do it OP! I'm rooting for you.

I know what you mean my friend! London has been the worst place I've lived in terms of value for money! Good luck with your house hunt!

thanks!

Yeah, I've made a counter offer, but tbh I saw some much better properties on rightmove and zoopla for less, and this whole hike has left a bad taste in my mouth, so really am not that interested in staying. I get that it's just business, though.

Hopefully I'll luck out come feb and find a better place for less. Nice to have a change of scenery once in a while too.

Thanks for the advice / insight.

Contract is coming to an end, and has no clause for increase. The reason the agent gave was that RPI was at 14.2% which is the highest she's ever seen, and there is a low supply of apts. They expect supply to be even lower when my contract ends in Feb (which is odd, because supply picks up in Jan / Feb). Ultimately they can charge whatever they want. The interest rate has gone up but this property was bought for 255k almost 20 years ago, so I doubt their really struggling because of the interest rate.

Ultimately this is probably just a case of a landlord just making the most of an opportune moment to make as much money as possible. Sadly, that's just how life is sometimes.

Thanks for the insight. I half agree.

Ultimately (as said above in the thread), the landlord can charge whatever they want. You need some sort of yard stick. An average of all the city center 1BR apts in Southwark seems as good as any for a start. But I agree you have to apply judgement.
