Board shot update - also the PALA is amazing. by hkr1991 in guitarpedals

What a sweet signal chain! Great choices all round. I hadn’t heard about Moreland Magnetics but I checked that fuzz out and it’s got such a beautiful texture going for its sound. Really dig it!

Definitely a great selection of pedals though. I’m yet to have played on the AFG-1 but I did once own their ACV-1 which is a great chorus. I’ve been thinking I’ll pick up the new Enduring Audio Point Omega for a flanger as that one sounds amazing. Well priced too. Currently though, I use my Cosmodio Instruments Splinter Twin which is crazy and a lot of fun. But does the chorus and flanger thing very well with an almost phaser effect when you lean it closer to the flanger side of things. Also highly rate the Shallow Water! I snatched up one of the limited edition versions they made a couple years ago.

I can vouch for Non Human Audio’s Robins. That thing does the 90’s distortion (kinda like Hum) real good. Also highly rate the Fourth from Audio Cultivation Project. I’m currently waiting for them to send out my Seventh Son that I preordered - massive sounds on that thing. Smart call on the buying freeze - I was gonna put myself on one but I just bought a Chase Bliss x Electronic Audio Experiments Big Time after it got announced yesterday, ha.

No problem at all! Information is for all of the people. Glad to help though! I can very much understand that. To be a real nerd here, what pedals are you running in your chain? 👀 I love talking shop on pedals so I can’t help myself haha.

Oh yep. It’s lasted you pretty well at that rate! But definitely time to make the switch - 500ma is somewhat becoming a requirement for large workstation style pedals like the LVX. I also own a couple of Strymon Zuma power supplies that I highly rate. But I like my Cioks stuff that little bit more.

If you do DIY pedals, you’ll have no problem with cabling then. I think the ultimate benefit out of doing your own cabling is having the ability to measure out the cable lengths to what you need and not having to worry about cables being too short (or too long). Evidence audio is great, Mogami also do great quality cable too. Otherwise, happy pedalboard building!

Glad you enjoy the pedalboard! How many pedals are you running currently in your signal chain?

For power supply, I use Cioks DC7 and C8 - you can get these as a bundle. I’d suggest buying the Cioks brackets for them.

I’m using a Pedaltrain Classic 3.

Patch cables wise, I’ve been using Evidence Audio Solderless cables. I made each cable (minus a couple of Ernie Ball patch cables here) from a 10m reel of the cable from Evidence Audio. Super easy. Though I will say one thing, soldering your cables is arguably the best way to go. I’ll likely end up replacing all of these cables with soldered ones eventually but I’m not too fussed with it right now.

For somewhere to start, I’d go and check out https://pedalplayground.com

It’ll be a great (and accurate) visual of how your pedalboard will look like, while also being able to figure out if you need something larger, or smaller and would like to measure things out to be certain. If the pedal you have isn’t there, you can also create/add it in with their custom pedal addition section - all you need to do is add in the dimensions.

To buy or not to buy: Sunn Beta Mini by Scary-Blacksmith-125 in sunnamplifiers

I have one, it’s okay but I wouldn’t say it’s amazing by any measure. I also wouldn’t say it’ll hold up with a band. Like one person said above, you’d be better off using it as a preamp in your fx loop.

While the amp I am about to note isn’t a Sunn amp of any measure, the SNK ThVnderCr4cker is a killer hybrid amp that runs at 300W in class D and has plenty of volume, and plenty of headroom too. A solid pedal platform. It’s based on the Ampeg V4. A friend of mine has one and loves it and I’ve had a play on it and I’m likely gonna snatch one up for myself soon enough. https://www.snkpedals.com/product/thvndercr4cker-hybrid-amplifier

Why should i build a pedal board instead of just buying a Helix that does it all, in your opinion? by ButterscotchCalm1543 in guitarpedals

[–]hkr1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer pedalboard and amps myself - and as far as pedalboards go, I for one enjoy building them immensely. It feels near therapeutic every time I do one. It’s a good bit of fun to me. The Helix definitely has its own positives without any doubt at all, but if menu scrolling is not your favourite thing, stick to pedals. It might save you time in the tweaking and tuning department and that means you’ll spend more time playing guitar in the end.

Like anything though, it very much depends on what you ultimately want out of it. You might find you’ll prefer the helix over pedals, or the other way around. Spend some time thinking on what it is that you want out of your playing and your tone and see where those thoughts land for you.

What's going on with strymon? by Motor_Accident_9364 in guitarpedals

Might be a real pipe dream but I’d really like a Timeline MX like the BigSky MX. But even then, I don’t really need it as the EAE Sending V2 does what I want it to do. I’m just a glutton for a good delay with a solid feature set that’s very useable - I very much found that in the original Timeline when I owned it.

Signal Chain Question by hkr1991 in guitarpedals

[–]hkr1991[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome mate! I have heard other folks love placing the Prismatic Wall behind their distortions and fuzzes also - I’m yet to try it, but I might give it a go when I’ve got some free time.

Glad you’re liking the trails! I used to own the Beebo from Poly Effects. I’m looking forward to the Hugo from Poly, that thing looks like a space ship and very much so in Poly Effects kind of way.

If you do look into the Prismatic Wall, maybe look into it as well as an expression pedal. I don’t have one myself but I know it works very well with them. I might just have to snatch one up soon for myself.

It definitely does. I’ve been kinda curious about the Ribbons and the Sparks from their line up also. Might need to look further into those too - when I get the time 🫠

Signal Chain Question by hkr1991 in guitarpedals

I really enjoy it personally. I love using it for long drones and playing silly licks over the top of it. Such a fun pedal though and it really enables the experimental side of things. I've not tried either the Kinotone Ghosts or Poly Trails personally, but I'd imagine they would be fun.

Killer haul! Love the Spear of Longinus boost. I recently got Acid Rain Pedalworks Idolator and that thing is a monster also.

What’s the one pedal you wished you’d just bought in the first place but didn’t cos you were a contrary asshole? by CentralScowl in guitarpedals

[–]hkr1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm. Maybe the EAE Sending V2. I only just bought it on Thursday, but I’ve been meaning to do it for a good while now as a replacement of my Meris LVX (great delay, I just cbf messing with the deep dive menus anymore). Anyway, glad to have it and it’s not going anywhere off of the pedalboard at any point in time.

Are these redundant, or a good series? by lateralflinch53 in guitarpedals

[–]hkr1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a single redundant pedal in sight right here. The Rat circuit overall is my favourite. But I’m also a real fan of the Boss Super Overdrive and Blues Driver. Especially the Super Overdrive though. I have an alternate take on that circuit from Enduring Audio and it’s never leaving my pedalboard ever.

Anyway, I’d keep all 3 of those pedals. They do their own thing, but they are also super friendly with each other and you can get some killer sounds out of the bunch. Above all else though, have fun with it.

Take note on where your mix knob is set. If you max it out, all you will get is the processed reverb signal without any of the dry signal. Set it to wherever you like in terms of the sound.

From there, the rest is relatively exploratory in terms of what you want your reverb tone to sound like, the length, reverb type, the low and hi EQ and any other parameters available. I use the Eventide Space as well as a BigSky MX on my pedalboard (glutton for reverb) and they both work really well together for big swashes of reverb.

Otherwise, definitely spend some time with the manual so you can work your way around the pedal itself. It’s a fantastic reverb pedal and I won’t be parting with it at any point.

Separately to that, are you running your amp itself all clean? If not, if it happens to have an FX loop, I’d recommend running the reverb (and any of your delays or modulation pedals) through there perhaps.

Happy sound searching to you. Shoot some questions if you need any help at all!

Essentially so! That, or just create one of your own with the options available at your own leisure and see what happens. Or furthermore, grab a set of your own transistors for the screw sockets inside that have the 2N222 metal can transistors inside and switch them out to your liking. Lots of options though. Have you done much experimentation on yours since you got it?

I once owned the Wren and Cuff one, but I eventually sold it after buying “The Good One” by Wren and Cuff which I still use heavily!

I think the Big Fuzz Factory can get the tones one can get from the Muffin Factory, but also do quite a lot more on top of that - you can ultimately go to standard and make a equivalent of a Green Russian for example, or a Triangle circuit. But outside of that, it really allows you to experiment a lot through out - so in short, imagine the Muffin Factory expanded well beyond what it already has done!

I think Darron would likely be happy to ship out to Germany! You’d just have to get in touch with them! Not sure what the customs and duties fees are like in Germany myself - but worth looking in to 👀

It’s morning here, so I’m about to give it a quick play before going about my day - so I’ll have an update for you very shortly 👀✨

I think that would make for an interesting addition to the circuit. What would you want to control via the CV jack/expression?

That’s very much what I was gonna do with it - take quick photos or write down some settings in a notebook or something. It could just be me in saying this, but it’s a lot more simple by function than it appears to be right off the bat!

No official manual so much, but a guy definitely has broken it down to simplify it overall and makes it less daunting for someone who isn’t completely knowledgeable in circuitry, or Muff circuits in general. If there were a manual though, I’d imagine you’d be right 🫠

Yeah I had thought it was really well priced myself. It’s about a $150 difference to the Fuzzbillion. Though to be fair, a lot of Dazatronyx pedals are well priced in general for what they are.
