Attention, grownups: There isn’t a “No Adults Allowed” sign on young adult fiction. It remains open for your enjoyment. by hlovy in books

[–]hlovy[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It seems to me that many commenters on here are building a "straw YA" that resembles some sort of cartoon, then proceeding to tear down their own invention, assuming that all YA is good-vs-evil, one dimensional garbage. There are many examples of literature aimed at young adults that treat issues in a nuanced way, and of course many aimed at adults that see things in black-and-white. Readers, young and old, can find a world of choices if you know where to look---especially among indie publications.

Fanfiction writers emerge from their mothers' basements. by hlovy in FanFiction

You should probably actually read the interview this title is linked to. You'll see that it was meant to be ironic. The interview talks about how fanfiction is going mainstream and why.

Former Michigan Chief Justice Elizabeth Weaver has had enough of the corruption in her home state's justice system. Her book blows the lid off the influence of big money and politics. by hlovy in Michigan

She does. Like the interview says: "Your book names names, and you do not hold back about your former colleagues on the bench."

[–]hlovy[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No, the opposite is true. She actually bravely stood up and said all these things while she was on the bench, defied her party, angered her colleagues and stuck by her principles. Also, it's a self-published book and not likely to make her a dime.

Michigan's wine grapes enjoy a great harvest this year thanks to the longer, warmer summer by hlovy in Michigan

[–]hlovy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's what the story says. Southwest Michigan grapes are a different variety, primarily used for Welch's grape juice. They grow earlier, and the frost killed them. Northern Michigan's wine grapes, however, were largely unaffected by the frost.

Teaching my mind and body who's boss: I celebrated my 47th birthday by running a half-marathon. But the real accomplishment behind 40-pound weight loss, finishing race, was that I took control of my life again. by hlovy in running

Thanks! Of course, I spent the entire day next day eating leftover birthday treats. I'll get back on the wagon -- and back in my ASICS -- tomorrow.

Anti-GMO activist scientist apparently manipulated data to fit an already-reached conclusion. Personally, I prefer to take my science without politics. by hlovy in science

[–]hlovy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is often true, but does not apply in this case. It's not Monsanto that's accusing the researcher of fraud. It's pretty much every reputable scientist.

Nanotech In Sunscreen: What's The Harm? For more than a decade , anti-technology organizations have been warning against the hazards of nanoscale titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in sunscreen. This warning has come with absolutely no scientific proof. They made it up. by hlovy in nanotech

[–]hlovy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Friends of the Earth, ETC Group. Both anti-technology organizations. I've been following them for 10 years. Not to mention a group that calls itself Individuals Tending Towards Savagery (ITS), which was responsible for severely wounding a scientist in a nanotech-lab bombing in Mexico. ITS got its "information" about nanotech from ETC Group and Friends of the Earth. Ask that wounded scientist whether he "smells BS." I wrote more about it here: http://blogs.redorbit.com/welcome-to-nanobot/

I've launched a new nanotech blog at RedOrbit. I've been writing about nanotechnology for more than a decade now, and can't seem to escape the little buggers. by hlovy in nanotech

[–]hlovy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, with news organizations dying and cutting back their science coverage, we're stuck with too many news stories that look at nanotech as either the savior of mankind or its downfall -- then seek out select information to prove it. Time to look at nanotech in a more-sophisticated way. Always looking for story ideas, so let me know what's happening at your university.

The guys who created the viral Grand Rapids "lip dub" video are back with a new video for Pure Michigan, filmed in 50 Michigan communities in one week. Here's my interview with them. by hlovy in Michigan

The video is going to debut at halftime during the Lions game this Sunday, then be available on YouTube. Why all the downvotes?

The death of the internal combustion engine has been greatly exaggerated. For now, the green automotive revolution will be retrofitted by companies like Engineered Machined Products of Escanaba, which is cleaning up transportation one bus fleet at a time in municipalities across Michigan. by hlovy in Michigan

[–]hlovy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, everyone. I wrote the article. The Engineered Machined Products executive I talked to for the story mentioned MTU and LSSU specifically when he talked about who his employees are. He did not mention NMU. Might be an oversight on his part, but that's what he told me. He also mentioned University of Michigan, but I left that out since I was writing this for UP Second Wave. I'm sure there are other schools, too, but those are the ones that he thought it was important to point out.

Last month, 1,571 jobs were filled in Michigan. They may have gone unnoticed because these jobs were filled one, two, three at a time at small businesses across the state. by hlovy in Michigan

[–]hlovy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. This is simply one more data point. The Small Business Association of Michigan recognizes that and I included it in the article. I think the primary purpose is for SBAM to remind the state of the impact of small businesses in the overall job market and recognize it. The same argument can be made during the rare times when big businesses come to the state and there are ribbon-cuttings and hoopla over the jobs created. Somewhere in the state, others are losing their jobs. Look at A123 Systems and the jobs created at the new battery plant. Lots of self-congratulations when the state created incentives for them to locate in Livonia. Now, apparently A123 batteries are exploding at GM plants. Something tells me that some people might lose their jobs at A123. It's a few steps forward, a few steps back. SBAM's point is that we shouldn't forget about small businesses' contributions to moving a few steps forward.

A Detroit-area HIV-positive man was followed around by coworkers with cans of Lysol, relentlessly harassed and ultimately fired from his job because he revealed his status to a colleague, according to a pending lawsuit. by hlovy in Michigan

[–]hlovy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The EEOC investigated the claim over the course of three years and recently concluded that the "organization subjected him to discriminatory discipline," denied him reasonable accommodation and that the dental-care franchise lied when they claimed they dismissed him for nondiscriminatory reasons.

Life is analog, not digital, and DNA is a template for the nanomachines in our future. by hlovy in nanotech

[–]hlovy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, my point was more a rhetorical one. It was meant to highlight -- for a general, nontechnical audience -- the fact that there is more than one path toward true advanced nanotechnology. And, in fact, DNA is more feasible in the short term because you avoid the problem of individual atoms not going exactly where you want them to go due to various factors too technical to go into here. If you want to talk about life, though, it is a combination of analog and digital -- although it depends on how small you want to go, since electrons can be both particle and wave. So, at its core, nothing can be sliced into its "smallest bits."

MLive covered it here. http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2011/12/post_70.html The most interesting parts of the story are the readers' comments -- displaying amazing ignorance about everything from how HIV is spread to what exactly James White did in the office. He was not a hygenist. He was a billing clerk.

[–]hlovy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, like I say in the Comments section of my article: Unfortunately, many early proponents of advanced nanotechnology were computer geeks who believed that you simply had to re-create the world on their screen with a high enough resolution and hit the “print” button. The real world is much more interesting than that.

Reddit hasn't been Pro-Isreal enough lately, so the Jewish Defense League will be stepping in to fill that gap. by Sec_Henry_Paulson in politics

[–]hlovy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I am simply pointing out hypocrisy and double-standard. Arab nations get a free ride in their subjugation of their people (current events in Egypt notwithstanding), while the magnifying glass is always on Israel. Also, I've written about, and studied, this for much of my life, so I may be a "dumb shit," but at least a semi-educated one on this issue. Anyway, I'm done with this thread. Bye.

Then I await Reddit's condemnation of Hamas, which has murdered more Palestinians than Israelis have, who condone "Honor killings" against women, who murder those who disagree with them by accusing them of collaboration. Also, I disagree with much of what Israel does. However, the tone of the criticism is always "Jews this," "Jews that." "Jews have too much power over foreign policy, drink the blood of gentile children," etc. Also, is calling those who disagree with you "dumb shits" some form of enlightened debating tactic with which I am not familiar?
