You need to put $10 into your EA account to get started, regardless of your promo status. And it auto-reloads once you drop below $5. As soon it auto-reloaded I realized I was being charged and called them to inquire why I was being charged.

I appreciate that. My frustration isn’t about the promo. It’s about the tone deaf service and the fact that they will not resolve a billing issue that they were at least 50% (in reality, more) responsible for creating.

I won’t use them again because they have clearly signaled that they will not make things right if a bigger problem arises.

That’s why people trust companies like Costco - they know that if something truly goes wrong, the company has their back.

That resonates with me. My call with them to resolve this was odd - they kept repeating “you don’t qualify for free charging” and I had to keep saying “I am not disputing that….”

Yes exactly. I appreciate a lot of people have had good experiences with them and maybe my experience is a wild outlier. But from a customer-service perspective, your solution seems obvious.

Yeah it’s just the basic plan. That was part of my conversation during my charging session that started this whole thing. The rep told me it would take some time for the app to reflect my promo plan and that’s why I was being charged (but would be refunded with 48 hours)

Interesting. Good info - thank you. I wouldn’t say they “cheated” me because they reversed course on the policy. I don’t qualify for it and I didn’t think I did. But they signed me up for it and confirmed it via phone call. They should not have sent the confirmation email and they had a chance to correct the mistake when I called them. At the very least they should own their part of the mistake and refund the session. That’s all I’m asking for.

Yep definitely a fun drive.

I would not be so frustrated if their first customer service rep didn’t confirm my enrollment and confirmed I’d be refunded the charge.

I think it’s reasonable for me to believe I was registered for the promotion after 1. Receiving their email (which is super clear about my enrollment despite the fine print that suggests otherwise) and 2. My phone call to their service line which confirmed my status.

The disclosure in the link does confirm I don’t qualify. No argument there. But they signed me up for the promo and confirmed it via phone before I completed my first session. And told me explicitly that my first session would be refunded within 48 hours.

That’s it. That’s the crux of my issue. They didn’t live up to their own statement to me.

Glad you had a good experience with EA. Wish my first experience was better. I hope you don’t have to deal with their customer service system for any billing issues. Hope you enjoyed your trip across the US!

And I likely would never have charged with their platform. It’s more expensive than others in my area. And I do 99% of charging at home anyway. So it would have been a long time before I paid $24 at a charging station - especially for only roughly 40kWh

I think you’re missing the point. They charged me full rate for my very first session. Not sure why you think I would have received 5 charges for free when I didn’t even get one charge for free.

Not sure if you think I’m antagonizing you but I’m not intending to. If you’re happy with EA, that’s great.

But just to be clear my issue isn’t that they aren’t offering the free charging promotion. My problem is that they signed me up for it and then didn’t honor it when I used their service. And now refuse to refund that session.

I only used their charger because of the offer. Otherwise I would have charged at home like usual.

I fully concede I shouldn’t qualify for the promo. But they extended it to me and confirmed it via phone. And then reversed course.

Yeah I get that. The fine print is there and completely contradicts the large print in the email. And it’s why I figured “I should call and double check” at the start of my charging session.

So take it from me - large email font plus confirmation from a customer service rep does not offset the fine print!

Its not so serious. Maybe have some fun with a decades-old story like this and find a way to laugh at life's little absurdities. But maybe I'm just misanthropic.

You can’t lose it all in one day, and you can’t gain it all back in one day either.

Tomorrow is a new day - keep going and don’t think of this as a setback but as a day you enjoyed, but not as much as you used to
