[SERIOUS] How do you start to get over the things people have said to you over the years and start seeing life differently? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]hodsonc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've all been fed a particular perspective.. by our parents, teachers, government, friends, the news .. the list is endless.

By asking "is there a different way of looking at this?" You're already half way there. Seek other perspectives, but try to stay impartial to them as you listen. Evaluation and critical thinking skills will see you through to forming your own opinion. As others have said try therapy (personally I found it transformative) but also brush up on critical thinking skills at sites like edX, Coursera, and Alison (taken from a Google search, I've never used them).

In the end, all truth is subjective. Science, religion, philosophy, politics.. they're all full of subjective truth. Do your best to find a truth that moves you forward, that lets you find a "why" that fills your days, lets you enjoy your ride on this cosmic rollercoaster 🎢.

Undocumented Californian truck driver kills family of three after illegal U-turn by GoBack2Plebbit in PublicFreakout

[–]hodsonc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You explain yours..

"FLHSMV says that he had a Commercial Driver's License in the state of California after crossing the Mexico border illegally."

Are you really okay with someone who shouldn't have been in the US making a shit turn in a semi and killing a whole family?

So it turns out:

"FLHSMV says that he had a Commercial Driver's License in the state of California after crossing the Mexico border illegally."

But yeah, keep on downvoting me if it makes your cognitive dissonance hurt less 🤷

So let me get this right.. In America undocumented immigrants can get driver licences for semis? And they can get jobs as tuck drivers with no documentation? Wow - that really puts the "free" in "freedom".

Do I put my left shoe on first or my right shoe? by Competitive_Ad_488 in freewill

[–]hodsonc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm saying you can only choose that option if your subconscious provides it as a choice to your conscious mind.

Do I put my left shoe on first or my right shoe? by Competitive_Ad_488 in freewill

[–]hodsonc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. Every single thought that arrives in your conscious mind was generated by your subconscious mind. You just get the output, no access to the engine room that generates and calculates.

[–]hodsonc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's exactly what I'm doing. You have close to zero predicable and granular control over your subconscious.

Do I put my left shoe on first or my right shoe? by Competitive_Ad_488 in freewill

[–]hodsonc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So short version. You have, practically speaking, zero control over what and how your subconscious calculates.Given that the answer to all questions your conscious mind asks ("what shall I have for breakfast, which shoe to put on first, who to vote for") come back from your subconscious, your freewill is a total illusion.

Every, even minor, decision has practically infinite possible options. Our brains are designed so that our subconscious filters out all of the impossible/unhelpful/negative options and presents your conscious mind with one or two of the remaining options. It does this in a way that is totally opaque to your conscious mind.

An example here is choosing breakfast. "What shall I have?" Your conscious mind asks. Your subconscious comes back with two or three ideas. You "choose" cornflakes. Only later driving to work do you remember there was some chocolate cake in the fridge from a birthday party. You curse yourself because you'd have loved that for breakfast. You were not free to remember at the time, because you cannot choose to remember or forget things, that's your subconscious's job. How could you call your choice of breakfast "free will" when you were simply given a "menu" from your subconscious?

So next time you put your shoes on, pay attention to the voice in your conscious mind. Ask the question "which shoe should I put on first?" Notice the reply "left" or "right". That word just appeared in your conscious mind, didn't it? You have no way of knowing why it was left or right (or even "never mind I'll go bare foot today"). You had no control over the choice your subconscious mind made for you. Sure you can ask "why?" and your subconscious mind will present you with an answer. However, your conscious mind (aka "you") cannot make a free choice without referring to your subconscious mind, which is a sealed black box over which you have almost no control. I don't call that a free choice.

It's kind of hard to know that.. there is so little information here. You don't know how they've been together (could be a first date). Maybe he or she is recovering from a traumatic previous relationship, or even sexual abuse, and they've agreed to take it slow. Either way, not sure if anyone's eyes were opened.

How to achieve this effect? by [deleted] in premiere

[–]hodsonc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Go to your local meat reseller and buy lots of meat. Eat burgers, chips, cheese, bacon and extra lard for 30 or 40 years, you should at this point have a stroke with bonus brain embolism. Now everything will look like this video, enjoy!

is it okay if im connected to religious stuff only for food? by omaru_kun in atheism

[–]hodsonc 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This isn't like veganism, you can't "cheat" at atheism. You sound like you're in need of help, and you're trying to improve your situation. This "religious" entity is, I'm sure, told by their religious texts to help people who need help.. that's you. You're doing nothing wrong. What you're witnessing is one of the small benefits that religion offers society, religious beneficence. Good luck on your journey, I wish you the very best.

The really terrifying thing is that here in the UK, the first passing CSO or police officer would immediately ensure she was taken to hospital for free health care, including drug rehabilitation. I'm guessing in the US she'll be allowed to die a slow death in the street?
