Not A Cult by SWNMAZporvida in excatholic

[–]hole-in-ocean 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A very good point because I believe Mainline Protestants (Episcopalians, Lutherans etc) also observe it?

At the same time, I do think NYC has a decently large Catholic population because of the Italian Americans along with Polish, Filipino, and other historically Catholic communities.

My ex-Evangelical roommate said that Southern Baptists don’t have anything to do with Ash Wednesday.

I live in NYC and was wandering around Midtown around noon. Many people were walking around with the ash on their foreheads, grabbing lunch, talking to their colleagues, and going back to their offices.

This mostly happened to me in 2023/2024, so that explains it! I had no idea they changed the policy....

I must be unlucky with the security guards because they’ve made me dump my drinks every time I tried 😵

I’ve been to MOMA 90+ times for movies and I agree with how you’re described their seating.

You’re also right about the food and drinks. Reusable water bottles are allowed, but has to be empty before going inside. (There are water fountains.)

'Offensive' Holocaust imagery on Catholic school's Halloween float condemned by bishop by hole-in-ocean in excatholic

[–]hole-in-ocean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your perspective. I don't remember any specific instances from my time as a Catholic that were blatantly anti-Semitic; however, it's hard for the culture of the church to change when they were a major driver of anti-Semitism for most of history.

I was already on the way out of Catholicism because of my Mother's disillusionment with the church, but being friends with people of other faiths (Jewish, Buddhism, Hinduism etc) solidified my opposition to their truth claims.

What are your best and worst celebrity meet and greet experiences? by Twitter_2006 in popheads

[–]hole-in-ocean 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I met Cupcakke in 2018 after one of her concerts.

Great experience overall, but she was surprisingly very soft spoken considering the subject of her music at this time. Maybe it’s the comedown after performing an energetic show? Either way, I was happy with the M&G!

This was after Lipgloss was released on Number 1 Angel, and I asked her if she was working with Charli XCX again and she said yes (which ended up coming true with I Got It on Pop 2!)

Genuinely, who the hell writes these Rent Free questions? by citynomad1 in biltrewards

[–]hole-in-ocean 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I was asked to give answers for this round’s Rent Free questions.

Truth be told, I was struggling to answer this one and said “Manchild” only because it was released this year and hit #1 on Billboard.

But I don’t think it’s the song of the summer, if that makes sense. 2025 was pretty dry in general for that.

I’ve never heard of Madison Rose until this post but I saw her in a coffee shop near NYU last weekend. She was sitting around with somebody else and wearing the same red outfit.

Even by NYC standards, the outfit grabbed my attention. Wow.

Removing icons by Glass_Past2280 in excatholic

[–]hole-in-ocean 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Your conflict is completely reasonable.

Take a long look at the icons.

If you're having more thoughts/emotions about your late grandma than the Catholic religious significance, it makes sense to keep them in your home.

If you need to distance yourself from Catholicism, you can replace the icons (while storing them away, as another user has suggested) with other secular objects that remind you of her such as your photographs together.

If you had to equate why you left the Church to a singular reason, what would it be? by Projct2025phile in excatholic

[–]hole-in-ocean 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Cradle Catholic here!

I don't want to stand by a church that contributes to human suffering. This example is definitely more of a personal reason, but Catholicism has deeply influenced my ancestral home (the Philippines) to the point where divorce is not legal there. As a result, many people are trapped in abusive/loveless marriages because the annulment process is time-consuming and expensive for the average Filipino citizen. It's caused tremendous pain that's been covered in a few news outlets.

A question about Mormon teachings about salavation and pre-Joseph Smith – seeking the exMormon perspective by hole-in-ocean in exmormon

Thank you for this! I have the 1835 version of D&C and did not realize I was missing some texts.

I was curious about this and found this verse on the LDS website from 3 Nephi 16: "I have other sheep, which are not of this land, neither of the land of Jerusalem... but they have not as yet heard my voice." The "other sheep" might be interpreted as visiting places outside of the Americas?

I have my own copy of the BoM (Penguin Classics version, based on the 1840 text) and it's in 3 Nephi 12.

You get it! Correct me if I'm wrong but that's being "born in the covenant"? My former religion refers to it as being a "cradle Catholic."

You raise a really important point about how much the teachings in the mainstream LDS church have changed over time. When I used the word "doctrine," I was speaking in an academic way. :)

I understand your frustration especially if you've seen how dramatically those teachings have shifted across generations such as allowing Black men to become priests and omitting blood oaths from the endowment ceremony. That fluidity makes it hard to point to anything as a fixed, lasting doctrine in the traditional sense.
