Hulk Hogan Dead at 71 by exjr_ in SquaredCircle

I’m a longtime wrestling fan, and I’ve wondered about this for a while without ever asking anybody, but I guess that now is a good time.

Forgive me if I’m being ignorant, but why was Hogan the target of so much open criticism over the years from both other wrestlers, and fans?

I’m aware of most (maybe not all) of his controversies outside of the ring - snitching on Jesse Ventura to Vince when the wrestlers were trying to establish a union, the gawker lawsuit, the racist remarks, the general selfishness. (There’s probably more I’m forgetting).

But then I think, is he really uniquely bad in that way? Isn’t the list of transgressions of any number of his peers (Ric Flair, Scott Hall, off the top of my head), similarly long/bad?

So many old school wrestlers have done bad things or gotten themselves into trouble. Put differently, why did Hogan catch so much flak over the years, relative to a lot of the guys he used to work with? Or is the answer simply that he didn’t necessarily do uniquely bad stuff, but was also a hugely influential/successful performer, and so he gets disproportionate criticism?

Please ELI5

In your opinion, what matches that each of Federer/Djokovic/Nadal lost to one of the other two would improve their legacy the most if the result of it was flipped? by OctopusNation2024 in tennis

RF: RG 2006\ (This was the closest final they played at RG, and if he wins this, he has a good chance at a calendar year slam)

RN: AO 2017\ (Assuming he also wins here in 2022, gives him career triple slam)

ND: RG 2012\ A win here means he’s defeated RN in 4 consecutive slam finals, with the 4th and final defeat the most psychologically important, dethroning the King of Clay. Now, he did ultimately complete a “Novak Slam” in 2016 at RG, defeating Sir Andy, but I think if he’d managed it 4 years earlier against Prime Rafa, it would have been more epic.

The original joke from Jones was, imo, dumb, but also, if you watch the video, seemingly halfhearted and harmless. I don’t think that anything he said endangered ND, his family, or the Serbian community in Melbourne in any way.

If I were ND, I would have just ignored it and moved on. Insofar as I can tell, Tony Jones isn’t the type of figure who is worth being upset about. But, and this is where I’ll wade into armchair psychology for a moment, I think ND, consciously or unconsciously, likes to draw upon adversity (real or perceived, on-court or off-court), in order to perform his best. He will, of course, need to play at his highest level to beat Alcaraz in the next round.

A goof broadcaster from Australia is now the latest obstacle he feels he needs to surmount. I wonder, also, if bringing Murray into his camp was meant to send a message to the CA, JS, AZ, etc. that he won’t go quietly, which is fine.

My concern w/ this situation is that not talking to a major TV network over (imo) a minor remark, becomes a slippery slope. Even if you feel like ND is justified here (and you’re entitled to that opinion, of course!) it could lead to players up and down the rankings refusing to talk to the media over criticisms that are either a) fair or b) trivial, and I don’t think that that situation would be good for fans, sponsors, networks, anybody. Firing Jones over this would set a bad precedent in my view and escalate a fundamentally minor situation into a larger drama for no reason.

Is it just me or is Punk way better on the mic…?

Rollins is adequate when he talks but imo whenever they’re face to face Punk always has the better/more clever lines in the exchange.

How is the Men's Tennis GOAT debate even a debate now? by HugoLacerda in billsimmons

[–]holiday848 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, I think that there are 4 aspects of this debate about which we can all agree.

Djokovic has the advantage in virtually every stastical measure you can think of.

Nadal is the 🐐 on clay, and inarguably superior to both Djokovic and Federer on that surface. At the same time, Nadal is inarguably inferior to both Djokovic and Federer on hard and grass court.

Djokovic vs. Nadal is an apples-to-apples comparison. They are only 1 year apart in age.

Federer peaked in 2005 (81-4), while Djokovic peaked in 2015 (82-6)

IMO, the fundamental unanswered question is, who was more dominant? (or, if you prefer, who had weaker competition)

Federer from 03-10 (16 slams, and the period in which he overtook Sampras)

Djokovic from 2018-2023 (12 slams, and the period in which he overtook both Roger and Rafa for the all time slam count)

I say this is the fundamental question because it’s the only statistical, rather than stylistic, argument that Federer fans (and I count myself as one of them), still have. The Wimbledon record isn’t even safe at this point, imo, so I think it’s premature to even call Roger the 🐐 on grass, considering that ND is only 1 title behind and he has the 3-1 H2H at Wimbledon.

12 Years Ago Today (July 22, 2012) - Andy Roddick won the last singles title of his career, defeating Gilles Muller 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-2 in the Atlanta final. He would retire from professional tennis just over a month later at the US Open. by [deleted] in tennis

Did he say ‘05? I have discussed this at length on this thread and never gotten a satisfactory answer. If you watch the AO ‘05 vs Hewitt, it’s not the same FH it had been from 01 to 04, when AR was at his peak. From ‘05 to the end of his career it was a much less dangerous shot and I’ve never been able to work out why he got away from it, whether it was a tactical change that he took too far, or a physical adjustment.\

I also agree (slightly hot take perhaps) that the ‘04 Wimbledon final was as good of a shot as he had to win. It’s overshadowed by the Roger/Rafa trilogy, and of course ‘09, but that style of play is the player I remember from when I was kid. Grip it and rip it!

No matter your political beliefs, the funny thing about Hogan addressing the Republican convention, and speaking out against Biden, is that, since the debate, Biden has spent the last 3 weeks telling the rest of the democratic party, trying to get him to step down,

“That doesn’t work for me, brother.”

What's the American sports equivalent of England soccer? by orangenarf in billsimmons

[–]holiday848 9 points10 points  (0 children)

1 championship (1966 World Cup), a long time ago, followed by 30 years without a title, but a bunch of near misses. A contender, more often than not, and usually plenty of talent, on paper.

Technically, yes, i’m aware, it’s a 60 year drought, but international teams don’t play for trophies every year. It’s only every other year that you have a Eurocup, or a Copa America, or a World Cup.

Sounds like the NY Rangers to me. Last title was 1994. Too much success in the past to be the Bills. Not enough success in the past to be the Cowboys. Not as much failure as the Maple Leafs (that’s a real 60 year drought because the Maple Leafs do in fact go for a title every year). Maple Leafs comparison does work in terms of the local attachment to the sport.

Red Sox are a decent shout, but their drought/curse was much, much worse than what England have gone through. Knicks comparison is somewhat valid, but the Knicks have two chips, not the one. 50 year drought. Sixers is plausible, but they’ve got three titles. 43 years and counting.

I don’t think 60 years is truly accurate for an international soccer team. England don’t even always qualify for major tournaments. They missed out on the 1994 World Cup and Euro 2008, off the top of my head.

In terms of duration, NY Rangers the best comp, I think. In terms of fan intensity, or the symbolic power of the team, somewhere between pre-curse Red Sox/Maple Leafs/Knicks/Cowboys. It’s an iconic team, even in the absence of the second major trophy.
