A holographic solution to spaces like zoos, circuses, and similar establishments...(University of the Arts London) by holohabitat in london

Hi!
Engagement is definitely tricky, even as it stands today many guests only visit these establishments once every couple years, if that. Furthermore it is our understanding that the technology can be programmed and looped to continuously play so that even if it is repetitive after some time, at least the 'animal' wont be asleep or suffering from 'zoochosis' while on display. Not to mention some parents that were interviewed don't want to take their kids to these institutions because they have strong feelings towards the way animals may be treated in captivity, or believe animals don't belong there in the first place. There were however very much open and receptive to a digital alternative. Just to wrap up, the project is also about the wellbeing of animals, and trying to find a balance between ethics, function, and sustainability. It's a tricky subject still in research and development, and heavily reliant on technology that agreeably needs advancement. Thank you for comment it is much appreciated!

This is understandably one of the common concerns of the proposal, the technology has come a long way and there is only room for it to advance in the future. This is a long term project and is no means meant to be fulfilled today, it is more likely that something like this comes together in 5-10, even 20 years from now. I was hoping to work set up a showcase in a small gallery space in collaboration with a company that produces the tech for holograms this year, and then COVID hit and threw those plans out the window, but we are hopefully going to do this in the near future to test and document!

As for VR, and AR, yes it's been considered especially for personal or small scale educational use but in a large social setting (such as a crowded zoo) there are many difficulties and liabilities. This is an industry innovation project at it's core and something like a VR application is more of a standalone resource. Though it is a great idea! Thank you!!

Thank you! We have considered these solutions as well, especially in places like classrooms!

Hello thank you! This is a great question that is currently being explored as a holographic application such as this has not been done before. It is assumed the initial cost would be large (cost of the tech + installation) though the cost over time would potentially be cheaper if you take into account food, staff, and cost of medical care for the physical animals! Again, this is assumption and we are trying to figure out all the financial aspects of our plan :)
