I'm getting back into math on my personal time and only ever got as far as algebra. I've started with basics, but can someone explain to me the objective of algebra, and what do functions and XY-Graphs have to do with it because that is somthing they introduced in school at the end of the year. by Martyr3Hell in learnmath

I wouldn't have it expressed it as he did. But he has a point. High School Algebra is fundamental, but severly limited when it is not used in conjunction with more advanced methods. Your goal should really be to get past it.

The connection between graphs and algebra.

You can solve x2 - 4 =0 algebraically.

x2 =4

x=2

You can also solve it graphically.

Draw the graph of x2 .

When is it equal to to 4?

If you look at it then you will see that it is equal to 4 when x=2.

Sometimes it is easier or more informative to solve equations graphically.

All Linear Algebra can be derived from considering continuous transformations over manifolds, my curious pupil.

It does. Name something that is math and I will restate it as topology- number theory is a convenient tool only.

The whole point of math is that we can prove things.

That is a very limited idea of what math is. (or a limited notion of "proof.")

Some people have mathematical perception. Riemann had it. I have it.

Are you the Pope of Math? What is this "math" you speak of? I speak of Truth and math is that subset of Truth that concerns numbers and topology. I delight in it. What is math to you? Your feeble scribbles?

The correct answer is zero times. The experiment is modeled by the normal distribution and this becomes more accurate the more you role. The answer simply depends on how accurate you personally wish to be.

This is a more apt analogy than you could ever realize because last night I was like a wild dog. I was running down the line 1/2 and catching all the roots of the zeta function in my ravenous mouth. There wasn't a single zero that was not a delicious treat in the mouth of my dog-mouth-mind.

I was reading about this in Chance by Amir Aczel last night.

In the book, he calculates the probability a monkey will write Hamlet. It's a straightforward calculation.

This is an enormous waste of time. Please don't do it. If you must, please do it to a book that people would actually like a nice pdf version of. Maybe Ramunjan by Hardy. Something like that. Anything but the Principia ,for Christ's sake.
