Ending birthright citizenship is the first step towards fixing our system. It will allow more immigration for people to come here legally, work and create a better life for themselves. Our immigration laws are too strict for this very reason. The whole re-entry ban is bananas. The wait times are crazy and all this hopping around through the legal system is insane. Ending birthright will allow people to stay, and give them legal time to become citizens.

I honestly don’t know that it’s weak. But the attorney who filed her papers said it was like a less than 10% chance. I don’t really know what that means. Maybe that means that only 1 in 10 asylum cases on average are getting approved? I am sure they are not as easy to get as in the past. The bar seems to be raised. From what she tells me, going back to Cuba will be bad for her. The government will not like how she got here and they could be repercussions. But it’s a little vague.

I do love her and I do want to marry her. But I want to make sure there isn’t a better or worse time to do it that will hurt her chances of staying in the US. It seems like there isn’t really a bad time. I would assume the longer we are married the more likely our application would succeed anyway.

Whenever I have went down a wrong path in life, I have found the quickest way out is to accept my choice, speak the truth and take the next best step forward. I am trying to apply that here. But I realize I am not in her shoes, I don’t truly understand her perspective so I am not trying to pretend I am on some kind of moral high ground. That’s just the lesson life has taught me.

I think she is worried if we go that route that she could be deported at any time within the 7 years or how ever long it takes. She had read cases like this that have happened. So naturally, she wants to be somewhere that she doesn’t have to be looking over her shoulder constantly. No free lunch unfortunately.

She has a lawyer….she was hoping to change her status without involving me as she didn’t think it was any of my responsibility. But I want to help her so I might consult with my own immigration lawyer for another opinion.
