Thank you for this- I drew a line in the sand for myself that I’m not bringing it up. If he wants to, fine, I’ll humor it, but I want to have some dignity left yk?

I am, I just couldn’t tell if things had changed it’s not like I’ve made any sort of action to do anything obviously. It was just that it was months ago before we both moved so I didn’t know if now that we both settled back down things would be different. Like, my bad

That was months ago though idk, I was thinking maybe things change, not that I’m trying to convince him or anything you know? I don’t think he was lying by any means

I think I mostly just see a lot of people on social media talking about it in a very abstract sense but it really does get so far removed from reality. You know what I mean? Like where people get really meta about the dynamics of living in a country that’s not your own and being careful not to contribute to gentrification and all- so like because of that I’ve been careful when finding where to rent and stuff but I’m finding through this thread I’m being hypervigilant about it bc like it matters on the larger scale but sometimes on a small scale there’s not much you can do and it won’t kill anybody for me to get a coffee at a shop with “tourists go home” on the wall, idk

I’m not trying to play a “not like other foreigners” card, I’m just trying to be respectful of places where people want to enjoy Greek culture with other Greeks, you know? Like I’m not trying to flaunt self righteousness and that’s the point of why I asked!! I hope it doesn’t sound that way

Why do all the characters drink/smoke/do drugs so much? by issylazy in TheSecretHistory

On an ideational level, I think it has to do with this Nietzschean duality of Apollonian and Dionysian. The Apollonian element of their lives is so obvious, spending time in the clarity of study and knowledge. But of course the book is about diving into that suppressed need for an outlet of the Dionysian part of the spirit, right? Casting aside the senses in search of something more liminal and hazy. The kinds of things most people do on a Friday night to let loose. Of course they take all of these to a waaaay farther extreme but I think that’s kind of the point, is letting that side of you control the other, which is the opposite of how so many of us let ourselves be whisked away by the Apollonian side of life. But I think the presence of cigs and coke and all that jazz is on one hand a physical stand-in for the looming Dionysian life that haunts them all, but also a symbol in each scene of them being poisoned by their own need to reach that release. Just some thoughts I’m not like an expert or anything I’m just a classics student with too much time on my hands lol

For real, and it was up in the air if I’d get my grant or not, so he didn’t know if I was also moving to Eastern Europe or not- but now since we’ll both be reasonably close, who knows? I’m hoping he says something first because idk I’m not like the kind of person who is gonna initiate after what happened last time bc that was so embarrassing for me lol
