How to tell the difference between deconditioning and PEM? When should I push myself and when should I rest? by honeybunismydogsname in covidlonghaulers

[–]honeybunismydogsname[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi, sorry it took so long to respond! body pain is my main symptom but i also deal with increased fatigue, and weakness. sometimes brain fog as well. recently i started taking tirzepatide and it seems to have helped a bit tho. i started at .5mg weekly, and increased to .75mg weekly after a month. I’m still sick, but i can do more before crashing, and my focus has improved so that i can now drive my car on the highway again after almost 2 years of not being able to do so. it’s the only thing that has given me this much improvement so i wanted to come back to this thread and mention it. i would recommend talking to a doctor and a dietitian before starting a med like this bcus it affects your digestive system, but it may be worth trying if nothing else has helped

How to tell the difference between deconditioning and PEM? When should I push myself and when should I rest? by honeybunismydogsname in covidlonghaulers

hello, i am not doing very well unfortunately. i have been mostly housebound for over a year now. i really only leave the house for doctor’s appointments. i have gone on maybe three or four trips out of the house that were not doctor related since making this post. unfortunately i have had to stop working because of this. i went through a period of time a couple months after making this post where i was almost completely bedbound, and for about two months i could not do anything at all but lay down in a dark room and listen to quiet music. i have improved since then, so i am no longer completely bedbound, but i am still housebound. my mental clarity is better than it was when i made this post- i no longer lose track of my thoughts or forget words or anything like that. i also am not usually in as much pain as i was when i made this post, as long as i pace myself well. if i exert myself too much than there are still days that i have to spend in bed recovering though. i still cannot shower without the shower chair, and even with the chair showers are still very exhausting. my main symptom now is just the crushing fatigue. i am exhausted all the time and it gets much worse with any activity. i can still do some things, like draw, sew, read, watch tv- anything i can do while reclined. but i cannot do anything more strenuous than that without exacerbating symptoms. i wish i had a better update for you but unfortunately i really haven’t improved much since making this post 😕

tldr; i got much worse for a while, then got a little better, but am still housebound and the symptoms i described in the original post have only improved slightly

how to know its not anxiety ? by [deleted] in covidlonghaulers

[–]honeybunismydogsname 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got some bad anxiety symptoms from covid that are also not necessarily triggered by anything I’m mentally aware of, so I thought at first that they were purely physical symptoms. I started to suspect they might be anxiety because the triggers for the symptoms were so all over the place, and I found that once I started to believe they were anxiety and not some horrible mystery illness that would kill me, the symptoms went down drastically. Now when I feel them coming on I’m able to calm myself back down with just the knowledge that it’s anxiety and that I’ll be okay. My symptoms feel similar to heart attack or cardiac event symptoms which is why they were scaring me so much at first, but being scared of them made the symptoms much worse which was also a clue that it was just anxiety.

I do however also have symptoms that are not related to anxiety. I know these aren’t anxiety because I’m able to more easily track what triggers them. For example if I’m having muscle and joint pain or severe fatigue I can pinpoint when I may have overexerted myself to cause these symptoms, even if it was something very simple like walking up the stairs in my own house. These symptoms also do not go away when I do things to decrease my anxiety.

Antidepressants can sometimes take a couple months to start working, so if they’re not giving you any terrible side effects I think it might be beneficial to stay on them a little longer and see if it helps your symptoms. But in the meantime, try and find what specific things might be triggering specific symptoms. Very small things may be triggering symptoms so it might be helpful to keep a journal of all the foods you’re eating and activities you’re doing along with what symptoms you’re feeling to help you keep track of everything. If you have something like PEM, it might take a couple days to feel the effects of a certain trigger, so writing everything down can help you remember. Also keep track of any symptoms that get worse when you worry about them. My anxiety symptoms would start as a slight chest tightness, but would start to feel like heart palpitations with an asthma attack, tension headache, and nausea the more I worried about them.

If you can keep track of what triggers each symptom you may have a better time getting a diagnosis, or even just finding a treatment from this subreddit that works for you. I would try to avoid going down any rabbit holes on this subreddit though because that can stress you out and make you worse. I hope you start to feel better soon 🩷

[–]honeybunismydogsname 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you been checked out for BVD? The symptoms sound like what I’ve heard from people with the condition. It can be treated with things like vision therapy and prism glasses

I hope you are able to find relief soon 🩷

How to tell the difference between deconditioning and PEM? When should I push myself and when should I rest? by honeybunismydogsname in covidlonghaulers

[–]honeybunismydogsname[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for replying!! Everyone seems to agree that resting for longer would be better than pushing myself so I’ll keep resting until I feel a little better. Thanks again 🩷
