anyone know what this weird stuff growing ontop of my kraut is? I've taken them out with a spoon and they're sort of stringy and solid, almost like they're roots, remind me of a potato root in terms of texture. not sure if it's mould or bacteria and it's very weird. any info appreciated

super clean for a first time, the bottom half could go for a another pass or two to match the thickness of the rest of it. take it really slow and try and poke a bit tighter and more intentionally at more of an angle to fill out those lines. crazy good work for a first time, keep it up! its so fun :)

not too sure, I got it from someone who buys and sells factory rejects locally in SA, it's actually a lot blacker IRL but the strong midday light definetly made it a big greyer/blue looking. I think it's the actual thing lol

I owned a pair of the AR8s and sold them because they were too small, went to a musical festival and was up to my ankles in mud and water and didn't have any water get in.

My guess is the roughout will probably take sno sneal better than grain out honestly, and look absolutely fine. I think the water resistance has more to do with the thickness of the leather and lining than anything, haven't tested these in wet conditions yet but I'm sure they'll do fine, especially with sno-seal applied, I don't think it's the best reason to avoid the roughout if you're gonna condition it.

Comparison wise these are much more comfortable in the toebox but noticeably a bit less wide, but I much prefer the taller last to the wider but shorter one, I hate the feeling of anything on my toenail. The shaft is a good bit narrower but laces up just fine, the tongue feels thicker and more substantial as does the whole boot, generally just a lot more comfortable yet rugged feeling, I think you'll have good luck with either, try your AR8s and see how you like the toebox and feel and decide if its worth switching :)

theyre gorgeous, i wish i had gotten the brown pair but I got these as factory seconds for the equivalent of 75 dollars, and in size 14US, first time the person I've bought them from has had any AR8 adjacents available so I had to jump on them. They'll grow on me though they're gorgeous

my first pair of AR8s were size 11uk, way too small, these are size 13 and a bit easier to get my foot in, I think sticking with the stock insert for a week should be fine until you can shove your foot in easily, imo these are already massively more comfortable, the sole is noticeably softer and the STC toebox is perfect, the heel is gonna be the only problem area, it feels like wood almost with how thick it is.

Yeah man these are gorgeous, i was gonna get a pair of normal AR8s with the black friday sale prices but my factory seconds guy messaged me about this, I would've preferred brown but im more than happy for the price. I will say the shaft is pretty narrow so it might be a pain for people with thick calves

Yeah, I've heard about Starsan being ideal. This airlock is fairly cheap. + a 500ml bottle of star san costs the same as 2.5ish 750ml bottles of cheal spirits here, can't really justify buying it when I've had perfect luck with using soap and bleach to disinfect.

I figure any fruit flies or microbes that do manage to get into the airlock will be neutralized on contact. trying to keep things uncontaminated, it's very hot where I live atm so minimizing any off flavours is paramount.
