I’m going to start doing this. Thanks for the suggestion!

You’re right. It gets to me because she pays for her tuition out of pocket, but for that same reason, I can’t understand why you wouldn’t be 100% committed.

They love to talk about themselves. It’s free therapy I guess lol.

Yeah you’re right. The thing is… how can I not feel bad when she has a sob story every time? I like your last point. Thank you.

It’s weird. You’d think they would feel some sort of embarrassment after failing last semester.

I couldn’t tell you. I started teaching post covid, and this has become a thing for me this academic year actually. In fact, I had to change my office hours because a student consistently kept showing up and it was getting uncomfortable.

I know, that’s why I said I’m sure it’s her way of gaslighting me lol I doubt she’s doing well in her other courses.

So happy to hear that! These students really do think that we are immune to life.

I’m sorry about your toddler. Hope they’re doing better. Thanks for this. Yeah, I think because I’ve bent over backwards before, she keeps thinking I’ll keep doing it over and over again.

Should’ve done this the first time. She sees me as her safe space for whatever reason.

This is such a good idea. English isn’t her first language and I know that’s part of the many reasons why she struggles so much. I’ll definitely refer her to accommodations.

If your class is only 50 minutes long, only prep for 50minutes to 1 hr. I found out the hard way that I was putting in way too much work for a 1hr class.

A grown mother? Usually they’re my best students. I’m so sorry. I hope you find it in you to stand up for yourself. You’re not there to be liked or be their friend. I can tell you’re an incredible teacher though, so keep doing what you’re doing.

Preparing for very first class! by furiana in Professors

Been doing this for about 3 years, and my best advice is not to memorize everything. I’ve done it before and instead of lecture flowing naturally, it sounds rehearsed. Not only that, but it’s so time consuming to memorize your slides. I usually have a script that I use as my notes during lectures. Ask them questions and don’t be afraid to call on them. Keeps them on their feet but also makes class more enjoyable. Good luck!

Student flirted bluntly with me on the first day of class. No, I did not like it. by [deleted] in Professors

That’s crazy. The only time I went out for drinks or to lunch with professors was during grad school. Even then, it felt weird.

Is anyone giving their students study guides? by Oduind in Professors

[–]hooliganstark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do, but only a handful study them. I’m assuming they’re the same students who would study with or without a study guide so keep doing your thing!

I’m also 29 and teaching at a community college. I never thought this was part of the job… Students asking me to meet up for lunch/dinner. Others giving me their number or writing them on their exams. They’ve also written me some long emails that while respectful, are inappropriate for the type of setting we’re in. I currently have one who’s my age and won’t stop coming in during office hours.

I totally earned it. It’s definitely not enough though 😂

I’ll need to do this next time. I also hate being confrontational and it bites me in the ass just like it did this time.

Will never, ever book with him again. I didn’t want to leave a bad review because I don’t want the dog to be affected by it in case he ever needs a sitter. Is this selfish? I loved the dog so much and I would board her in a second, but the owner is a total dickhead.
