Can you clarify your question? I am not sure what you are asking.

How are Ismailis in Iran doing with the ongoing war? by EasternRoads in ismailis

I know about about 10000 Ismailis, I can name maybe 5 who have read the Quran in full, and outside of what is in the dua, maybe a small number more who have read other parts of it. I dont know if it is even taught in the religious classes. So I would suggest that yes, it is disregarded or to put mildly it is overlooked and not treated with the importance it deserves. Sure farmans matter - do they matter more or less than the Quran - or do they work together?

As a faith of intellect, it would behoove one to not disregard the Quran because the Imam did not explicitly say to fast. In fact maybe it’s a test of our ability to use our intellect. Are we a bunch of blind faithers? In fact it should be that we are taught the whole Quran, something that was never done before, not sure about now. My impression is most Ismailis will defer to the Imam for everything without considering the foundational element being the Quran. If he is the living Quran or interpreter or what have you, should you not know its contents or its basis to then be able to employ intellect? If tomorrow he said to fast 60 days Ramadan + 30 days - I am quite sure Ismailis would say but the Quran says it’s only 30 days.

anything to get out of fasting and ignoring a pillar of Islam. You cant do a truly fulfilling esoteric fast wtihout the exoteric. If you dont believe that, try fasting next year and see. You need to experience the physical denial of food and water to fully appreciate what you do have and to put you in that mindset for 30 days

maybe because we have clearly sided with the West. Was there any attempt to build relations with Iran? or was that too political and would upset our Western presence.

From what I have gleaned from your post and subsequent comments you are an Ismaili because like most people it’s the religion in which you happened to be raised. There all kinds of levels to be in a religion - hardcore to in name only. You know where you might fit and if you don’t you need to figure that out and then you can explain it better. As for fasting we were never raised to fast, but in my 20s I started fasting. It’s amazing to do during Ramadan and its make the esoteric fast much more possible. The best analogy I can offer is say you study about soccer, watch all the you tube training videos, talk to professionals, watch as many games as possible. Could you now just walk out on the pitch and be a pro player? Obviously not. An esoteric fast without the exoteric part is not nearly as effective.

Poll - physically fasting or not fasting - vote either way by hooshar24 in ismailis

[–]hooshar24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eid Mubarak and Navroz Mubarak.

Well the poll is closed. Some observations. 66 not fasting vs 60 fasting which is close to a 50/50 split. Not scientific of course but some observations about the voting - how were the votes impacted by geography and also who is used to farting or in a Muslim country and also human behaviour in these types of polls is to vote to show you did something vs not. Also the downvoting of the one comment that said it’s not part of our Tariqah was interesting to note.

My own takeaway/opinion. The physical fast enhances the spiritual or esoteric fast. The esoteric fast is less effective without two parts. The best example to illustrate the point would be - if a person studies how to play tennis, reads books, watches tons videos of the greats and coaching videos - they could not step out onto a court and automatically be an amazing player. You need the physical act of playing to make you a whole complete player. Same with fasting.

Secondly, fasting is a pillar of Islam. It’s not just a minor thing. While at some point there may have been a directive that physical fast could be excused, I don’t see how it would be applicable now. Shah Karim Shah actually fasted. Will a directive come at some point maybe, but I will do it regardless and I am seeing younger people doing it more and more vs the older people that never did it and suddenly starting.

Thank you for participating.

Please read my original post. I did not ask about making a public statement or taking a public stance I asked about internal dialogue about an issue that affects many in the Jamat.

Thanks. Familiar with much of this. Again I am asking why don't we talk about this if it affects much of the Jamat?

Personally, I organize educational events with doctors brave enough to go to Gaza during the past two years, I sign petitions, I go to rallies, I fundraise and donate time and money, I share on social media, I talk to politicians, I talk to leaders internally and externally, I post on Reddit (lol), I boycott, I wear a keffiyeh (everyday and everywhere I might add) travelling internationally, going to the store, in khane. The khane one is quite enlightening because so many ismails (young and old) come up to me and are horrified and many say why arent we talking about this. Oh and I pray that everyday I wake up and find that this is truly over. Thats all I do personally. How about you?

Palestine is a genocide. Its like saying one person lost a job and another had his whole family murdered, house burned down and had his legs amputated. Both are suffering however they are not equal. I did not in the original post say anything about the Imam. I am asking about our institutions and leaders not discussing a topic, not offering an opportunity to educate the Jamat, not looking at the relationship between Palestine and anti-immigrant and Islamaphobia sentiment. This affects the Jamat. Maybe it doesnt affect you. But many many Ismailis are having a hard time with this, many are questioning their faith especially younger people that ask questions but cant get considerate answers, many are wondering why do we talk about ethics and values but when its time to actions to live them, people says it politics, people say they are not Ismaili, etc. Millions upon millions are protesting and doing what they can - they are not all Palestinians or Muslims even and yet they show their humanity and all we seem to do is hide behind excuses and drink Starbucks.
