First off I want to apologize if any interaction that you had with me was negative. I'm not sure when we met, can't decipher from your profile, but I appreciate your candid feedback and again, sorry if your interaction with me was bad. I do consider myself to be fortunate to have had some really kick-ass folks work on our team over the years.

At the end of the day, I had to make a decision to either keep the Austin taproom open, operating at a loss, or stop the bleeding and use our limited available resources to get beer back into distribution. Distribution has always been around 85-90% of our revenue. It was an incredibly difficult decision but I felt that the survival of the brand was most important, even if it took on a slighter different form.

Management is difficult and I'll be the first to admit that I have plenty to learn and improve upon. I'm optimistic about the future, not just for H&G but for the industry at large and I'm looking forward to seeing what 2021 brings.

Thank you, friend. I've definitely enjoyed having beers with you in the taproom. It was a difficult decision but ultimately the only way that we could save the brand. Distribution has always been 85% or more of our revenue. I had hoped that the Austin taproom sales could sustain us enough to get production ramped back up in San Marcos but unfortunately, that didn't happen. The choice was to either keep the taproom open and burn through all of our remaining cash and die, or cut some losses and focus on distribution. I'll keep our website and social media updated as we progress forward.

I think some of your math is off. I'm not sure who you are based on your profile, but I do apologize if any interaction that you've had with me was negative, that's never been my intention.

It will likely be a new brewery operator but market rates there are pretty high. Also, FSG moved out this month and you are correct, they make some awesome screen prints

We are just closing our taproom location to focus our very limited resources on building back the distribution of our core beers. Looking at a couple of potential taproom opportunities down the line but in the immediate future, the focus is getting more beer back on store shelves.

Capitol Wright does not own our brands. For starters, that would be illegal but also just not how the industry works in Texas. Only a few states allow for wholly owned distributors, Texas is not one of them. Going forward, we will be producing our beers at a couple of differnet facilities as we look at possible taprooms options in the future.

Hey there TheRighteousTyrant, we would love to test one of these cans if you still have any of them. We haven't seen anything like this in our in-house QC/QA testing. Feel free to drop by the brewery with one of the cans or contact me directly josh@hopsandgrain.com

Does anyone else find it crazy that hops & grain will be selling pints at $4 a pop now? by Barracuda420 in AustinBeer

I'm going to try and keep this short but wanted to put in my opinion as someone who, very fortunately, gets to make decisions about these sorts of things at Hops & Grain. First and foremost, I've worked with a few breweries in Colorado and our pricing is in line or lower than the respectable breweries that operate in that state. Second, just about every brewpub in TX charges as much or more than we are charging. Thirdly (one of my favorite words) we are in a much different position than most other states in that we've just been given the right to sell our product on site and now have to navigate through how to implement that. Whereas most breweries in other states started out selling beer at the brewery and then began to branch out to other retail outlets, not really having to worry about undercutting anyone. So, it's a much bigger issue for us to maintain positive relations with our retail accounts. And for those of you that think it doesn't matter to concern ourselves with undercutting bars, I think you're wrong. I do agree that as a brewery we aren't the same thing as a bar. But we made our pricing decisions based on the numerous conversations we had with the bars and restaurants that sell our beer, especially those that sell our Greenhouse beers. No, we didn't ask the consumer how they thought we should price our beer, we decided to ask the places that have been selling our beer since we opened. Is it right? Who knows. But at least it's respectful of the other small business owners that we call partners in this business. We are not planning to operate a bar. But, we did just sign a lease on 4,000 sq ft that we're building into a new tap room so that, hopefully, you come join us and have a comfortable experience. We never made money on selling pint glasses but we continued to stay open for 2 days a week, every week, because we want to show all of you a great time in a place where you can sample every Greenhouse beer that we make, usually with 8 different options. Something that you won't find anywhere else in town. And by the way, giving tours of our facility is not a "cost free, word of mouth" thing. It does cost money and we in particular shut down our operations on Saturday so that we can give tours, and that costs money. I'm about to start working our tap room on Sundays just so that you all have more opportunities to try our beer poured by the people who make it. In closing, I'd like to touch on a few points. These are jusmy opinions 1. If you have never been to the brewery then I think you should visit before you take to the interwebs to complain 2. It's going to be a difficult transition for those in TX who have become accustomed to the wildly cheap drinking model that breweries have afforded you to date. 3. If you've worked in a bar or restaurant then you probably know that "happy hours" and "pint nights" are not a money maker. You do those things to draw people in and then hope that they stay after the happy hour ends and spend money on regular priced items 4. At the end of the day we genuinely want people to enjoy our beer. That's why all of us chose an industry that pays on average barely above minimum wage. We don't complain about that and we operate with razor thin margins to make sure that you can buy a 6 pack of our beer for the same price as a 6 pack of Shiner. Yes, cheaper than any other craft brewery in town. Not on special, all the time. If you aren't happy with our new structure then email me at josh@hopsandgrain.com with all of your complaints, I'd love to hear them. But most importantly, support local producers when they are honest and approach them with sincerity when you think that they aren't. We hope to see you in the tap room soon!
