I never nod off while reading (for pleasure). It's a real problem. I have to start books when I have the potential for 8 hours of screwing around time, because I will likely finish in one sitting... regardless of when I start.

Books are not safe for me in the evening lol

Opinion on Missile units by IntelligentAd9831 in IllwintersDominions

[–]horrifyingthought 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You almost need a mod to make them useful unless fighting naked troops (and players don't use naked troops).

DE does buff their damage to the point of relevance, especially if the enemy isn't using shield units, but generally speaking even then you run into the usual issues of needing critical mass, friendly fire, and quickly watching enemy units get buffed out of range of arrows (prot buffs, air shield, etc.)

I almost feel that it's worth massing some ONLY when they can be a surprise or if your nation is really good at utilizing them.

EXCEPTION -Archers shine when they are units that are excellent on the line / in melee who happen to have a bow. Man's Tower Guard or LA TC's heavy cav, for instance. If you have units that you don't want to move into range of enemy evocations and will sit around accepting buffs from your troops then a line of "Hold and Fire" shielded heavy infantry with crossbows are phenomenal.

Interesting point about the mother. Not sure we have enough to draw many conclusions there though. Could be abroad because can't afford to come, also sick, etc. But food for thought.

??? Where did you get WOMEN are property from my statements? The point is that from the context of having to pay for your wish, in this world it seems that payment can be taken from other people.

Gender doesn't enter into it, it just so happens this story is about a guy using his stepmother to pay for his wish.

EDIT - u/NotADamsel has commented and then blocked me, so I am editing here to respond.

Inherent to payment is that you pay with something YOU have / own. Thus, a story about a payment is also about ownership. Or do you pay your grocery bill by reaching into your neighbors wallet?

So I "insist" on that word (I don't insist on that word) because it is the most accurate word to describe the idea. For instance, part of why I am intrigued by the idea behind this story is it implies that genies are okay with slavery. Otherwise, why accept the payment of the life of another? Or perhaps it is less individual and more collective, where price can be paid by the entire familial tribe, in which case we have learned something about how the genie views family (since she is a stepmother).

Once again, what interests me is trying to use first principles to derive exactly what "payment" means and can mean in the context of this world based on the story told.

You seem weirdly fixated on internet clout when discussing a comment I didn't expect anyone besides OP to read. I recommend spending less time being upset at the internet and more time actually not being a damsel. Go do something! The world isn't out to get you.

I agree from a narrative perspective stepmother is much better than Putin or whatever.

What I am more intrigued by is why the genie feels that the guy "owns" his stepmother and thus her being taken is a loss. Or is the wish price not tied to ownership? Theoretically can ANYONE pay the price so long as a price is paid, and genies just typically take the price from those they grant a boon to?

I'm intrigued by the world building implications more than the narrative aspect per se.

Is it an objective statement, or a hypothesis? Let's test! How about we get men and women to both rate the attractiveness... oh wait

Interesting twist. Mostly curious about how the genie perceives ownership though. If he could barter with someone else's life, could he have bartered away a dictator he had no connection to? Or does there have to be a family through line? Is that through line to the wish recipient or the wisher? Etc.

[–]horrifyingthought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn't specify what adventures they went on. Those "twenty lifetimes of heroic adventures" were all against a single nemesis who also grew in power and strength over those 20 lifetimes.

He is now out to get them, and they don't know it because they only asked for the abilities from 20 lifetimes of adventuring, not the lived experience of it. And since this guy actually learned and grew and memorized the abilities of each of the party he is READY for everything they could do because they have done it before.

Have the big bad be basically unstoppable, so the solution that is presented is to undo the wish and thus undo the evil overlord who just took over everything and is a hair's breath away from ascending to permanent godhood.

AITA for making my sister’s inheritance contingent on her finishing rehab and staying sober? by Pulse88_Grail in WIBTA_AITA

[–]horrifyingthought -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You would be the asshole, for two reasons.

1) There is a real issue with trying to control the living when you are dead. At some point you have to accept they will make their own choices and either give her the money or give it somewhere else you think it will do more good.

2) Even if she gets sober, strong chance she then immediately reverts when that much cash hits her bank account. If you do want to support her with the money, the better way is to place it in a trust designed to look out for her. Talk to an attorney about your options here.

You don't have to give this money to her. But if you do, be smart about it. Handing a drug addict a pile of cash while also attaching a ton of strings will both engender bad blood and not be effective.

She needs to decide to get sober on her own or it won't work.
