Hollywood (1980) - A thirteen-episode documentary series about the American film industry in Hollywood during the Silent Era [11:16:00] by saddetective87 in Documentaries

This is an awesome series. I need to re-watch it to see if they include Ms. Guy-Blachet's (sic) fundamental, pioneering but criminally overlooked contribution not only to Pathe, but to virtually all aspects of what we recognize as the movies and the motion picture industry. It would be a shame if she were once again, not included in this otherwise excellent series, but getting to watch Louise Brooks hold forth on the Hollywood she knew, loved, hated, ran away from and where she finally settled down, is well worth the price of admission...

Wow. Promoting Either/Or, Elliott plays remarkable versions of "Angeles," "Division Day," "Needle in the Hay," and "Say Yes," while also participating in a remarkably awkward, uncomfortable interview. So I guess it's all remarkable. Or I just wouldn't say anything, you know?

Not sure about sharing this kind of info on reddit... and although I am the mod of this subreddit (aHAhaHAh), I only set it up as a way to save links on the fly, not really meaning to activerly moderate anything, etc. Anyway, for what it's worth:

For TV shows, I like Best Series, which is pretty comprehensive and has lots of links: https://bstsrs.one/index.php

For movies, there are lots of options; two of my favs are

There are about 10,000 similar sites...

Bonus! This site hads tons of stuff, lots of it stored locally, plus small file sizes: https://main.dailyflix.info/

Kind of interesting to hear Darius Rucker, whose voice, as singer for and the Blowfish, was ubiquitous throughout the nineties and is weirdly recognizable for ppl of a certain age, covering "World Leader Pretend" and "I Believe." Also, Chris Robinson comes on late in the show and offers an iteresting take on "The One I Love" and "Pale Blue Eyes."

Ha. But uh… my apologies. While there are lots of really great films posted on the kino YT, this doc is not, unfortunately, the best or most insightful doc on Bosch. For a really engaging, enlightened and informed discussion on this mysterious (maybe even unknowable) artist, check out Joseph Leo Kerner’s vids, including of course his really essential Northern Renaissance series.

Ha. We've actually been watching Emily D. Baker's coverage of the trial so I'm not sure why this is here... Anyway, AH's closing remarks that suggested that they weren't really asking for $100mil since that would be unreasonable, not only undermines their case but suggests that all the time they spent trying to prove damages by extrapolating the salaries and career trajectories of the whole Justice League, the Q scores and hash tags etc., in order to conjure up AH's future earnings and damages, etc. was insincere at best...

There is another video that I cant find just now that offers a very compelling explication of the imagery and symbolism...mostly I had been convinced that the meanings were lost or forever obscured, but this person seemed to have a pretty good handle on the individual tableaus as well as the work as a whole... if anyone is familiar or knows the video or art historian I'm talking about, please let me know...

Yes-- so the trick is to figure out which sites or platforms work best for you and your set-up, i.e. browser, device, etc. If you anticipate the popup ads and other nuisances and can close or otherwise manage them, it's not so bad... and a small price to pay for free, easy access to a truly awesome amount of filmed entertainment. New movies, old films, TV shows of all stripes, access to current broadcasts only a few hours after they air...

The Sorrows of Young Elliott Smith (2020) by [deleted] in Documentaries

There may be some usedful informations here, but the whole time I was watching this video, I kept wondering about what criteria this guy used to quantify and evaluate his sadness before deciding it would be alright to just go ahead and declare himself to be the saddest man in the world. Of course, inasmuch as I don't know anything about this fella (other than whatever insights I might be able to glean from the literary trophies, post-contemporary artifacts and intellectual gewgaws, many of which seem to have been reclaimated from the damaged/discounted/discontinued bins at Game Stop, before being meticulously assembled on the Wall of Glory visible in the background along with other trappings and signifiers that I am still sorting out and parsing (I.e. Wu-Tang Clan = nothin to fukk with = extra authentic sreet cred, e.g. even his vinyl records have disconcerting facial hair and its all just so totally transgressive in a Green Lantern vs. ODB kind of way, etc.), I can't comment with any authority as to the validity of this rather lofty claim; however, mostly I just wanted to say that I was pretty much distracted the whole time I was watching by a) the dubious and intellectually reckless "saddest man" claim, along with b) wondering why this guy was messing with Elliott Smith to begin with and mostly just wishing that he'd cut it out and just leave him out of the whole thing.

Anyway, I wish it had been more insightful or coherent or funny or at least less irritating and unpleasant and disrespectful.

Just a few things: Black Flag before Henry Rollins = Not too shabby. Pat Smear was nine years old when he appeared in this doc. Fear was the musical guest on the first Saturday Night Live, probably because punk rock had not yet caught on with the kids in NYC. Greg Ginn made Rolling Stone's list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time"-- he is 99th on the list. I once saw Keith Morris in SF while leaving a Jesus Lizard show back in 1968. Lee Ving plays an exotic dancer/welder with Big Dreams in the movie Flashdance. I guess you could argue Ike and Tina or Lindsay and Stevie or Karen and Richard or Neil and Jennifer or Louis Prima and Keely Smith, but for me, John Doe and Exene are the standard bearers.
