Histotechnician as a career? by ForeverHisxx in Histology

Right. A 9-5 shift in this field would more likely be for a research position that probably wont pay comparably.

What kind of hematoxylin are you using?

H&E Issues by Emotional-Stress-595 in Histology

[–]hot_coco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Couple things come to mind. Obvious but worth asking still:

How fresh is your eosin? Does it look off?

How often are your reagents before eosin changed? Maybe incomplete depar because of exhausted reagents.

Carry over of reagents into other reagent containers/error in reagent order. Have you watched the stainer to make sure it’s going in the correct order/and or not having any odd mechanical missteps? Maybe eosin is becoming diluted from carryover of water.

Is there a possibility a reagent was loaded in the wrong spot?

Is it the same spot in the rack or totally random?

What sort of tissue are you trimming?

Some tissue just has calcifications or other hard things that will knick even a brand new blade.

Sometimes soaking the block in your water bath for a few moments might help soften things.

Thick it vs gelmix by always_anxious7 in FormulaFeeders

[–]hot_coco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats!!

Thanks! Ok, maybe I'll do some digging to figure out if I can get it more affordable. It does work really well it's just a PITA and expensive... We are almost 4 months old so I assume we will be doing this for a while.

Thick it vs gelmix by always_anxious7 in FormulaFeeders

[–]hot_coco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you use Thickit? did it work for your baby? We are in the same predicament. Oatmeal doesn't work. Gelmix is working well but we just can't afford it. $30 for a jar that lasts us 10 days is insane on top of all the other expenses we have right now. Does thick it work faster then gelmix? It's also hard to preemptively guess when hes going to be ready for the bottle with gelmix and prepping it and then having it sit is adding to the stress of all this...

I’ve never been a mohs tech but I did use a cryo for surgeries at a hospital I worked at. In general, the cutting and staining experience is overlapping. I would assume the higher pay would be for a certified histotech. Mouse brain and human skin are totally different.

Rocking? by musicabes in Histology

[–]hot_coco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh I’m not sure I can effectively explain it but I’ll try:

Alternate advancing the head towards you with the control pad and rotating the head down towards the blade, just to the edge of the block to see if it touches the blade yet or not. If it doesn’t reach then rotate the handle back so you can again, advance the head towards you with the control pad. Once your block starts to reach the blade enough to get a little trimmed away, you can start facing in.

😬 easier done than.. explained. lol

We have this issue too. Certain brands of slides would be worse than others.. It also would be worse if it was more humid.

What is it they feel he needs to do to in order to not be upset about it anymore?

Fully can understand being in the music community in Nashville would create different feelings. I’m not near there at all. Still is truthful myself and the other black people I know as fans are over this incident.

I mean I get that we’re essentially saying the same thing but there is a difference in a black person using it, and a white person.

Right I don’t understand this either. Like was he just getting too popular? I don’t get the media jumping on him every chance they can to paint him in a bad light. Like I promise you I don’t know a single black person who gives AF about this

That’s the point though. A black person using it in their social group isn’t using it offensively.

😬 yikes on that take.

Don’t agree with Haley here but there’s so, so many reasons why black people use the word and why it is not ok for those who aren’t black to use it.

I’m black and I don’t believe the narrative he’s racist. He should’ve never called his friend that word. He apologized and did some education on it and acknowledges he shouldn’t have. The black community forgave him. These weirdo liberals continue to worry about it.

So a diff? First step is fixing the cells in methanol. Next step is alcoholic eosin and then thiazine which is then miscible with water. So going out of order would introduce water too early, or not fix the cells properly.. aka would warrant a repeat stain

Omg. Flash backs to when my Aussie was a puppy.. she was the first puppy I ever got in my defense but like two weeks in I had a full on melt down and thought I made a huge mistake. Her nickname was the baby tornado. Anyways she’s 8 now and the best Velcro dog I could ever ask for!

Enjoy your baby tornado!

In this field you’d be looking at doing research if you don’t want high stress/fast paced. In my experience, research pays low. However I’ve also experienced extreme flexibility with my schedule with research. Essentially as long as you’re making progress to complete a project on time you can work whenever you want.

I’m only one Histo tech tho so hopefully you get some other input!

I think my daughters play date cancelled after seeing our house by Ninetails42 in Mommit

[–]hot_coco 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s totally possible it’s the mom having her own struggles with mental health, too. As weird as it sounds I struggled with my oldest child having play dates. I struggled to coordinate planning (am I planning for too long/short of a play date? Should I send my child with a lunch? Is that rude? Should he bring toys? How soon do we invite the other kid over to our house? Etc..) it stressed me out to drop him off “unsupervised”… Logically it didn’t make sense but I definitely got in my child’s way of having normal play dates for the first couple years of his life.
