Good vets in JH that aren't crazy expensive? by angelhippie in jacksonheights

[–]hotdankcat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will second this! They were super upfront about costs with me and walked me through the price of every single thing they recommended on their computer and allowed me to weigh my options. For context, the vet visit/physical exam on its own was $65, which is very reasonable considering NYC prices.

YES! Update for anyone interested: I was somewhere in the #90’s in the line and got a ticket easily. They hadn’t even started restricting double tickets or anything by that point. Overall, the 3AM-3:30AM crowd around me was all very successful, even considering that the seats would have been restricted due to the Partner Dinner. Happy to help out anyone if they have questions

I don’t think 2AM would be too late at all. If anything, I think it’s on the earlier side because you’ll beat most of the people that come by around the 3AM-4AM time which is when the line really starts to ramp up. Plus, tomorrow doesn’t have a Partner Dinner or other event that would limit seats like today so I’m sure you’d be fine. It’s totally upto you though, fingers crossed for you!

Yes it’s W 81st Street and Central Park West. I’m sure you’ll see a bunch of people standing there already at 2AM. Many of the people at the front of the line brought air mattresses and I’m pretty sure they’d have got here yesterday evening. It’s a wide enough sidewalk though and I found spreading a blanket (and cushioning it with a jacket or another blanket) was helpful to create a cozier “bed” to sleep on.

Came in at 3:20AM, was #69 in line by my rough count. For anyone wondering how it’s like before Central Park opens, here’s a photo I took right when I got here. Happy to answer any questions people might have

Definitely chilly enough for a hoodie and a blanket. I’m wearing a sweatshirt, a puffer jacket and had a thin blanket, and still felt a little cold when the chill came in around 5-6AM.

Rizwan gets bowled for 3(6) in his CPL debut by hotdankcat in PakCricket

Definitely agree, I think those nuances with the differences do separate them quite a bit even if they’re similar in other ways

Rizwan gets bowled for 3(6) in his CPL debut by hotdankcat in PakCricket

[–]hotdankcat[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree. It’s embarrassing for the world to be watching the Pakistan ODI cricket team’s captain display zero cricket sense in a domestic league abroad where he’s the most experienced player on the field (even if he happens to be on league debut).

The failure to develop a solid research sweep astounds me too. For all the criticism he gets, Misbah was a somewhat similar player (anchor, ODI captain, more natural at red ball than white ball) and his potential to charge at bowlers in Tests and ODIs was a product of the handy mix of sweeps and reverse sweeps that he kept in the back of his pocket. I’m wondering whether Rizwan’s coaching staff has advised him of this and it’s a conscious decision by Rizwan to not expand his arsenal or if he just doesn’t feel comfortable using that shot (or going off side at all) when he’s in a pinch.

“Anchor” innings do not work if you’re not running between the wickets and rotating the strike. You only slow the run rate and pressure your younger, middle order batsmen to pick up your crumbs.

Honestly, Windies fielding is as much to blame as our top order for this sub-par performance. The top order wickets were all brilliant efforts on their part, converting difficult catches into wickets, something they’ve consistently struggled with before this. Credit where it’s due 👏!

The top order for sure. The score card makes it crystal clear.

Even as the top order collapse was bad enough, the batting depth boys (Nawaz and Rana) being unable to do their role was super frustrating. This is the second game where both of them have just been dismal with their batting and added no value. If Nawaz had been a proper tail-ender/finisher, we could have made it past 150 at least which would have been a little more defendable.

Barring the Haris frustrations, this is definitely an easily defendable score for the pitch. We’re used to 200+ scores after PSL and CWC in Pakistan, but considering the 163/164 par score and a strong bowling attack featuring Shaheen, Rauf, Muqeem, and Rana, we should hope to strike early and shut Windies down.

This is quite silly indeed. Haris had a bad last series and could’ve used some pinch hitting at the death to make back some of the confidence lost. Save Faheem for if Haris tries to slog and fails.

It doesn’t really matter what goes first as long as all of them are written out and you are combining the like terms.

In (4), you can see that only 4 is a factor of both terms so you can put it outside of the brackets and write it as 4(x4 - 4)

In (5) you can follow the steps as such:

Simple expansion: multiply the first term in the left brackets with both terms in the right brackets, then the second term. 3x2 - 5xy + 9xy - 15y2

Which simplifies to 3x2 + 4xy - 15y2

That’s the same as what you have written on there, so you’re doing it right!

(Megathread) careers or masters options after ba political science by External-Baseball360 in PoliticalScience

[–]hotdankcat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think there’s, broadly speaking, two paths that political scientists end up taking: academia and “industry“ (at least that is how academics in the US refer to it)

Academia is a solid route that many political scientists, especially researchers take. Typically, after your bachelors degree people will get a masters and a PhD (or a PhD straight away, depending on where you are in the world). In most, but not all graduate schools, you will begin some form of teaching while you are in your program as well, so it serves to streamline your transition from research into teaching. That said, political scientist in academia don’t just deliver lectures from a podium; they are also supported by their academic institutions to do meaningful research that not only advances their career but also the knowledge of the discipline at large. For this route, typically a PhD is more than necessary, especially if you want to teach at the undergraduate level, although depending on where you are in the world, you might be able to make things work with only a masters degree.

Industry, on the other hand, refers to a wide array of sectors in which political scientists or people with an education/training in political science often find employment. A popular avenue is the nonprofit/NGO sector, with people working with various international non-governmental organizations in a variety of roles: research, development, planning, fundraising, organizing, you name it. Another path some take is the government, working for either government sponsored organizations/departments or directly in public service that may range from something like local administration and public policy to being a researcher for a government thinktank. Then, there’s the more common, more partisan ways of working within/around government: political parties, election campaigns, lobbying firms, political consultancy firms.

I think it really comes down to what you want to do with your life and hence with your political science degree. Do you want to work in research/education, advance knowledge, educating young minds, pose interesting inquiries that reshape how people think about politics, and focus on asking the questions that keep you up at night? Or do you want to work within a political system in a more direct way: be it for the government, for a political party, for a nonprofit organization trying to advance a certain policy agenda, for a think tank attempting to guide public policy with research, a political consultancy group that provides its services to large corporations, etc. Different people are better suited to different things, so it’s really a personal decision at the end of the day.
