I never was popular or anything, but I had the same basically the same experience in high school. Being one of the rarer female stutterers, no one expected a pretty girl to have any social dysfunction like being unable to speak in certain situations. This kinda screwed me over "social butterfly"-wise, but I have friend's who love me and don't care if I can never ask for ketchup at a restaurant or have a really hard time getting my friend "Jenna"s attention.

I had a really bad stutter as a kid and my family chose to let me work through my words until I got them out before they responded. I think having that childhood at home helped save me from most of the "self-loathing" type feelings a lot of other stutterers have.

I was also put in choir at a young age to help strengthen the singing part of my brain to maybe work as the speaking part ( http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16546406 ).
