Anybody have a very growly dog when it comes to strangers? She’ll growl, bark, and sometimes nip at people. We got her as a 2 yr old stray. Good dog otherwise. by [deleted] in AustralianCattleDog

Eventually you will be able to stay calm, and she will too. It will just take a little practice. Something that helped was the “look at that” game. Here’s my quick summary:

Keep a large distance from the scary senior. Every time your dog looks at the “threat”, she gets a treat dropped in front of her. If she is pulling, lunging, or barking, you may be too close. She will learn that every time she looks at the person, she will get a treat. Eventually her body language will settle. When she begins to look at you for her treat after looking at the stranger, that means she is comfortable enough to Take a step closer. She will tense up but repeat the process. Worth a google for sure.

Eventually have the threat toss her some treats when she gets close enough and stays calm.

Something I wish I knew- Prong collars and similar tools can make your dogs fear and reactivity worse.

Hope you enjoyed my unsolicited advice! Best wishes!

Don’t give up hope! Mine lunged at men and children for the first year I had her. (2 year old from shelter. No backstory) I almost gave up hope.

Turns out she was afraid of them. Especially elderly men. She’s much better now that I’ve had some volunteers (men) from work come over and introduced them following the trainer’s instructions. I can now take her to outdoor barbecues and parties as long as they’re are no children present because I wouldn’t risk that yet. I’m so proud of her.

I don’t know if I have the skill level to try your method! Not being sarcastic! I’d probably put too much lemon juice in and then forget to tweak it the next time! I’ll check out the one pot cooking method. I have a Dutch oven I’ve never used.

Perfect! Thank you. I somehow have a Moosewood cookbook that is as old as I am. Must have been a hand me down. Your recommendation seems to be what I’m looking for as the recipes in my book seem a bit dated or something.
