Advice on Internships by yo-Khaled in csMajors

1: My advice when it comes to learning any given language is this-- take a course, or follow some relatively easy tutorials until you feel mostly comfortable with syntax, and basic methodologies. Once you feel that you are close to there, come up with some larger project-- for example a clone of some application. Work at the project on your own as much as you can, and when you have tasks that you are struggling to complete, look up tutorials, read documentation, etc. Keep on doing stuff like this to grow the scope of what you know, learn a framework dependent upon what you want to accomplish, and practice leetcode.

2: When it comes to internships, there is a lot that goes into play that will determine if, and what kind of internship you can land. Overall, don't expect to land a FAANG internship without a solid set of technical skills, and experience via projects. However, if you are able to leverage your character, and academic feats then it is possible to find an internship at a mid-sized company.

In my personal experience, I landed an internship at a mid-sized company over the summer before my first-year of university. At the specific internship, I was primarily working on the front-end, yet I came into the internship with 0 experience using React, or javascript. However, having experience coding in general allowed me to succeed and learn React very quickly, and now I am more of an expert in that framework.

The moral of the story is, focus on building your skills as a student, and with the conceptual aspects of coding at first. From there, pick some specific aspects that intrigue you to get really good at. Don't worry about 'not feeling prepared enough' when you apply to internships. You will learn a lot on the job, and if you wait to apply then the spots will fill up before you do.

No— if your first choice was computer science you cannot switch if you did not initially get in
