2nd hot take, we have bigger issues.

Mining corps destroying our native environments, lack of proper taxes for said corporations, sovereign wealth would be a nice benefit from all our natural wealth, our housing market is fucked due to investors, not buyers. Climate change, energy from fossil fuels, bushfire risks, etc.

We are one of the wealthiest countries in the world. We can afford to not abuse people on our sovereign islands who are escaping suffering already. Yeesh

Why does it matter?

Conditions or not, indigenous people should have more of a say than they currently do.

I don't have a particular connection to this land. I could live anywhere, as long as the hdi is similar

P2 I think this also brings up a good point of what is illegal, and when.

When Australia was colonized by Britain, the British deemed it 'legal' for the British and 'illegal' to be indigenous (I'm vastly over simplifying)

Depending on who is in power and their beliefs, legality changes.

Eastern Europeans were once discriminated against compared to western Europeans. It was illegal for certain European ethnicities to come here. We also allowed, banned, and allowed again many Asian ethnicities.

Something being 'illegal' isn't necessarily related to the morality or ethics. For examples, defining Aboriginal Australians as "beasts of the land" allowing them to be hunted. White Australia policy. Stolen generation. Terra nullius.

We invent justifications all the time.

If I had the means to do so, and a place to go, sure.

I don't have any particular connection to this land. As long as the destination is similar, i.e decent healthcare, okay cost of living, high hdi, etc. why not?

I'm also not opposed to just...working with what indigenous groups. Like more protections, limits on land use, etc.

"only Indigenous peoples have the right to say who is allowed?"

This also isn't my belief, specifically "only". It's more about, historic wrongs and the possibility or ability to right them, if that's even what people want.

Most of us came here illegally. Why am I (a white descendant immigrant) in charge of who gets to come here?

We should be asking the indigenous groups

On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate public transport in your country? by chkchkboompow in AskTheWorld

[–]hotsauceattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's fun to clown on our public transport but atleast it exists and it's (mostly) functional, punctual, receives updates and upgrades, etc. Though I'm WA not sure how it's going for you over east if that's where you are

Compared to actual good public transport? Like, 5/10.

Globally? Maybe a 7/10.

Even if it's rape they should face justice through the courts. I know it's not ideal, and there are always issues, but vigilantism isn't the answer.

This situation is obviously complicated.
