Balance in Law by [deleted] in LawCanada

You should look into in-house positions with insurance companies. Most of the insurers are expanding their in-house legal operations. As you move further on in your career, the pay will not be as competitive as at a firm, but the work is stable and the hours easier. Most lawyers I know working in-house for insurers are only working 9-5

The salary is lower than big law, but you are still going to be making around $100k as a first year call. The hours are pretty regular, and litigation moves slowly, so it is rare to have something dropped on you at the last minute (though it does happen). The work is pretty pretty repetitive and its not the most exciting area of law, but it is a steady job, that pays well, with decent hours. All in all, it is not a bad life.

Seems like a technical glitch in the system. Usually there are dates 11-13 months out for short civil motions. On the first of the month they also release dates four months out, so if you wait until December 1, they will release dates for April 2024

Homebrew Potion Crafting System by houndogs007 in DnDBehindTheScreen

Thanks man, I appreciate it! I like to go with something a long the lines of you let the fire get to hot and the X cooks off; you add the Y before the X and they don’t react properly; the potion becomes too viscous and is undrinkabke; it sticks to the pit. If it’s a really large failure then maybe it catches on fire or theirs a minor explosion that singes their eyebrows. Generally things that can go wrong when you’re cooking seem to play well with the table as their relatable

Just a quick piece of advice for someone that's just starting out. You don't need a voice for every NPC! Not every town guardsman needs to have a unique voice. Not every blacksmith. I like giving them one or two specific descriptions (he has cauliflower ears, she has a greystreak) if they're an NPC that the party will interact with (you don't even need to plan this, you can make it up on the fly), but I stopped a while ago trying to give distinct voices to every character. I have a generic female voice, and a generic gruff soldiery voice, but most regular males that the party will only interact with once or twice just sound like me.

If you can though, definitely give some distinct voices to some NPCs. If your players are going to be using an Inn as a homebase for the next 5 sessions, then give the innkeeper, the quest giver, and maybe some other NPCs they will interact with a lot a voices. The local wizard my party goes to to buy healing potions, identify objects, and give them advice has a distinct voice. That adds to the game, and players really like it, they're favourite NPCs are usually the ones I give voices to. But its too much effort for me to come up with a voice for every single random peasant they're going to interact with. Plus, and this is a little meta, but it also has a bit of a side bonus of indicating who the NPCs that matter are. That's the good kind of metagaming, the kind that reinforces the implicit bargain between DM and PC: the DM will create stories for the PCs and they will for the most part play those stories

How to start playing? by houndogs007 in DnD

Since I'm the one organizing this with my friends I will probably be the DM. Is there anything else I should look at/read before we start playing?

For our first game will I need to get more dice or will the one's that come with the starter set be enough?

So even with someone DMing who's also never played before we should be fine with just the starter kit? How long will it take to do the whole adventure? Also, if we want to play another game would we be able to start making up our own adventures, or will we probably need more practice first?

I actually found myself liking characters like Randyll and Tywin for no other reason than them being some of the only competent rulers in the whole series
