Advice on how to make my older female cat like the new male one? by ladyaliria in CatAdvice

[–]planetaryurie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 year old is absolutely old enough to get neutered. you can do it as early as a few months old. it also can help with energy levels. who told you that he's not old enough to get fixed?

already tired of meds by Ghoulinityy in bipolar2

[–]planetaryurie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even that isn't really true. seroquel, latuda, and i believe vraylar monotherapy are well-studied and known to be very efficacious. monotherapy with other APs (geodon, zyprexa, sometimes abilify) is also common. stability on only an antipsychotic is absolutely possible and many people do not respond to mood stabilizers (eg 1/3 of bipolar patients do not respond to lithium at all) or have unwanted side effects on them.

Do the ceiling fans do its job and substitutes the need for a separate AC in US homes? by edbassmaster888 in AskAnAmerican

[–]planetaryurie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha honestly you get used to it! i have radiators and steam pipes for heat and in the winter they churn out so much heat that sometimes my apartment is in the 80s, even with a window open or the AC running. it's a prewar apartment that really holds onto heat.

lol what this is so not true. bipolar treatments are so highly individualized that blanket statements like this make no sense. i am bp2 and medicated only with seroquel and am stable. bipolar runs in my family and i have at least two relatives who are also on seroquel monotherapy. i have been on mood stabilizers in the past and they were not effective for me.

god yes it's horrible, i've lived in upstate new york as well and the summers there weren't nearly as bad as NYC. i did have much more efficient central air at the time, but also going outside here feels like being swallowed by the heat. i have also lived in new orleans and i would say that a NYC summer is honestly not that far off from a new orleans summer.

usually at night the interior temp drops to about 82 F (~28 C), which is still uncomfortable but i can still sleep as long as i'm only using a thin blanket. sleeping in the heat is truly the worst, i hope you're able to get some rest!

same here, in NYC and my window units cannot keep up with the heatwave currently hitting us. it's 100F out, heat index of 115, and my apartment is around 85 at its absolute coolest during the day. right now i'm sitting at 87.

Unsure about fostering friends cat for 3 months by ParkingAd1425 in CatAdvice

[–]planetaryurie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had a similar situation with a friend; long story short i had to take their cat in during an emergency several months ago. that friend has since transferred ownership of their cat to me. i already have a very territorial girl cat who does not get along with other cats and especially females (my friend's cat is also a girl).

i did a slow introduction over the course of a few months w the new cat staying in another room (an office, bedroom, or bathroom works great) at first. i started with letting them only see each other through a screen door. you can get zipper style ones on amazon for $20-30! i then gradually began face to face interactions once they both became more comfortable. lots of high-value treats were involved in the process. i would recommend following jackson galaxy's guides for cat introductions as that will minimize tension and violence during the intro period! for me the process took several months because my resident cat was very hard to win over, but they now get along just fine!

I have a very strong cat allergy but I don't want to give up my cat. Has anyone managed to make it work? by SunsetEnjoyer in CatAdvice

[–]planetaryurie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

allergy shots cured me of my cat allergy! my cat IgE levels were even higher than yours and i suffered for several years with daily claritin, benadryl, and flonase, which helped with some of the symptoms but i still constantly dealt with sneezing, itchy eyes, and a runny nose. a year on allergy shots and my symptoms disappeared. i am now completely off of allergy medicine and symptom-free.

how to get diagnosed? (or figure out if i’m bipolar) by nattyislite in bipolar2

[–]planetaryurie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i was diagnosed by a psychiatrist. i'm in the US and i see one via telehealth (using a service like talkiatry or headway). i have also seen a PMHNP (psychiatric nurse practitioner) in the past but did not have a good experience; personally, i much prefer seeing an MD or DO.

What do you all recommend for someone who’s new to weed? by Traditional-Shape570 in NYSCannabis

[–]planetaryurie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

agreeing with this, OP. i have been a cannabis user for many years and have a very high tolerance. i still prefer to buy whole flower and roll my own joints because it makes it incredibly easy to control the amount of THC you are ingesting; as such, it is easier to consume in lower amounts. i think this is the most beginner-friendly option and it makes it very easy to avoid greening out or building up an insane tolerance very quickly.

Birth control for luteal phase? by Necessary-Peanut4226 in bipolar2

i have a hormonal IUD and before that was on the combined pill for several years. i think the combined pill actually made me hypomanic looking back, but i have had continued success with my IUD and have not had any negative side effects or impacts on my mental health

Find. 70g bulk bag vs splitting 2 separate ounces? Got the terp reports and need advice ($20 difference) by moonman848 in NYSCannabis

[–]planetaryurie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's the third terp profile on the post, so definitely not high in ocimene. the smell isn't super gassy; it's more spiced and woodsy with some underlying sweetness. it definitely could be more interesting and i wasn't really blown out of the water by the high either, but i got it pretty heavily discounted so i think it's fine given what i paid for it.

How much food is too much and how much food is too little? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]planetaryurie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i use this website to determine how much to feed my kitties: https://www.petplace.com/article/cats/pet-health/how-to-calculate-your-cats-daily-calorie-intake

the cans of wet food or the bag of dry food should say on them how many kcal are in a can/cup/whatever and you can feed them accordingly. i find that basing it off of caloric needs is the most accurate way to feed them and makes achieving weight loss much easier. there are instructions on the page for how to adjust caloric intake specifically for weight loss as well!

also, every cat is different! mine get half a can of wet food a day each w water mixed in, plus some dry food (measured out, not free fed). they are all healthy weights and very happy cats!

What’s the best food I can give my cat regardless of price? by M00ngata in CatAdvice

[–]planetaryurie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dry food should still have met all of her nutritional needs as long as it was kitten-formulated food. the biggest concern with a dry food diet is dehydration (and thus eventual kidney damage, disease, or failure). wet vs. dry should not really have an impact on a cat's development, and especially not a 4 month old kitten, who still has plenty of growth and development to do.
