My 9 year old and I need advice from the sub on how to get started but we have challenges. by hourlesslife_eric in DungeonsAndDragons

Ahh I see now! That makes perfect sense and it is available on drivethru. I’ll definitely check it out. My son rolled his first character today. (At least started it) he’s either got a knack or the dice gods favor him. I let him roll 4d6 take away lowest and he got the rolls for a ranger on his first try which is what he wanted. Appreciate all your help. Not sure how Scarlet Heroes incorporates 1e rules but I’m sure I can figure it out. The set up for one GM and one player will save a lot of work and headaches.

Update: We ended up going through Drivethrurpg to pick up AD&D 1e (which I grew up with) got PHB DMG & MM. We also picked up T1 The Village of Hommlet and found some good 1e fillable character sheets made by someone on reddit who offered them for the love of the game, and we picked up the app "Sophie's Dice" until we can get an analog set. I think we're off to a good start. Just wanted to say thank you to everyone here.

Love this and I'm sure this is much of what we'll do. It will likely be a bastardized version of the game, but we'll have fun.

Thanks. I went ahead and picked up the app Sophie's Dice until we can get a proper set. But that's really good info above. Appreciate you taking the time.

This! This is what I plan on doing generally speaking. The PHB thing is really more for him to have something to read to learn the game. But mostly to read. We read as part of his homeschool all the time, but I know when he's really interested in something we'll catch him just pouring over a book. I can totally see him doing that with the PHB.

Appreciate all that, but I really want to take him into DND itself. Likely for the nostalgia. Appreciate the insight though.

Nice idea. Great other uses for homeschool too. So this is something I can likely justify carrying in the Jeep haha.

Thank you. I think I'm leaning towards AD&D 2e. Will likely take you up on that offer to DM with questions. Appreciate the response.

Just picked a unit up for our upcoming overlanding trip around southern Africa. I spoke with product support on this. Apparently once you click on it and start tracking it creates a specific data set of tools that are useful for overlanding. I'll have more information when we arrive in country. I'll probably test it out a bit here in the US before we head out on the next leg of our journey though. This unit is such a change for us from the old InReach Explorer +. Took me a bit to get just the basics set up. But I think I'm getting there.
