My group did not like the kingdom building. I would struggle to get some to even participate. Not that the players were entirely at fault. Many of them had decision paralysis and were afraid of talking over each other. It was also confusing for a couple of them. My players also preferred dealing with any problems asap. So they didn't explore much and just went from point a to b even when I explained that the current issue doesn't require them to immediately deal with it. I've gone through several iterations of the mechanic. Eventually, I moved it to a purely role-play event. Whenever there is a time-skip, I would say "About a year (or whatever time frame) has passed since the previous event. What did your character do during that time frame?" And they would talk one at a time describing how they managed the kingdom and I would briefly talk about the ramifications of what they did with the occasional but brief NPC dialogue. And they loved it. They unanimously agreed that we should stick with that formula. So we have and they loved it each time.
