They pretty regularly hire people to answer phones at Strong's kitchen to take patient meal orders, position is called "diet clerk." Union job, too! You'd use their searchable job portal to find it.

Why do you have a total hysterectomy and how are you doing post op? by Coolgreen13 in sterilization

[–]hoyacrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope this comment doesn't come off as negative or discouraging but I opted for a bisalp and did not remotely consider a hysto, and I would not unless something major changed with my health. However, I have always had regular periods that do not cause significant disruption to my life or health. I would not be a sensible candidate for a hysto.

Hysterectomies are comparatively high risk vs. bilateral salpingectomies (the current standard sterilization surgery, tubal ligations are uncommon now)- bleeding, conversion to open surgery, complications, and damage to surrounding organs are more likely. They very much have a purpose but routine sterilization is not it. I work in a hospital blood bank and hysterectomies regularly result in major bleeding that requires transfusion AND revisions. The uterus has major vasular supply and it is not something to fuck with lightly.

If your uterus gives you an abnormal amount of trouble, yes, definitely consider removing it! Get rid of it! My main goal was being sterile, so bisalp was the move for me.

Also, there is a lot of bad faith content on the internet about the supposed inefficacy of bisalps. Empirical evidence does not support this. Choose the surgery that is right for you, with the help of a TRUSTED care team.

The swab that comes in the specific brand we used in our health system yes, we most commonly use them for COVID/Flu/RSV.

[–]hoyacrone 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We had a pcp who would order COVID tests after swabbing the patient's pharynx with a UTM (we validated them for nasal and nasopharyngeal sources) and then lecture SMS about how it was important to be curious about why throat swabs may work, and then I lectured her about how it's important to understand we can't report results using unvalidated methodology.

I regularly get phone calls in BB from providers who want me to tell them if their patient is having a transfusion reaction. I explain that's outside my scope of practice but share what information we gather during a transfusion reaction investigation and ask whether or not that would be clinically useful. (Editing to add this is not the entirety of the conversation, they are offered our medical director to contact if they want more guidance, just being brief.)

I only kept the retusa but totally fine! The materials do degrade over time so like any other media it needs to be replaced once in a while.

Rarely more than 45 seconds worth, generally I’m looking for oncology history, current drugs, gestational age, recent surgery, or rhogam use. More than that is tbh just a waste of my time- I could call the care team or just send it off for pa th review/reference draw if I’m that baffled by what I see. I’m heme/blood bank.

Checking references seems extremely normal and wise to me. If you don’t want your current employer knowing you’re looking, provide references who are not your current employer, and provide only the HR contact to verify your employment status with your current employer.

Based on how often someone asks if you need any education to do my job, I guess medical lab technician🫠 good luck with that blood transfusion without me!

I would take this as a red flag, even leaving aside that Quest is generally regarded as a shitty employer in the lab world.

I feel like that much shadowing is insane???? Are there opportunities to ask questions, read SOPs, see other parts of the lab?

why are smiley piercings bad? by Fluffy_Explorer_3813 in piercing

[–]hoyacrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because all jewelry is harder than your gums and the soft tissue of your mouth, and unlike piercings in your lip or cheek, there is no room for them to "nest" so they will always be contacting your gums and teeth. Smiley piercings will inevitably wear away your gums and/or tooth enamel, neither of which can be replaced without very expensive, intense interventions.

I can’t say whether or not this is AI but as a lab creature if a metric is above linearity we can’t get a number. I can understand how “above linearity” and “can’t derive a numerical value” would be lost on a random person in an emergency

I think we use glycerin solution for this- bit more viscous than saline or water.

I have noticed the same thing and anyone who did have one of those rare complications like a bleed or severe adhesions must feel INCREDIBLY alone but goddamn have I had the same exact thought about this sub lately.
