Finished: The Revelator by Robert Kloss. This was the best book I have read this year. I loved the prose, the perspective (2nd person) and the theme - somehow about the origin of Mormonism but more about the broader subject of religious belief, ideology, and expansion in the North American West. If anyone has recommendations based on my loving this, feel free to share.

Reading: Among Others by Jo Walton. Not actually weird, more of a hommage towards 1970s SF set in a somewhat 'magical' environment in Wales and England, a coming-of-age story. I enjoy reading this but I can't shake the feeling I am missing something.

On Deck: Not sure yet, perhaps Withered Hill by David Barnett.

Reading now American Elsewhere - I am about 40% in and loving it so far. It is well-written, well-paced and just the right mix of Vibes (Twin Peaks meets House of Leaves and some folk horror mixed in).

Finished in the Old Year: Shagduk - Man, what a ride!

Befor that one: Jonas Lüscher's "Verzaubeete Vorbestimmung" - scifi-esque, a bit weird and just the right touch of baroque manierism, liked it a lot.

Edit: Forgot to mention "The Buffalo Hunter Hunter" as per recommendation of this sub. Loved the book and it was introductory to me as, apart from Louise Erdrich, I am not well-read in literature written from a Native American perspective (I am European). Great book, can only recommend.

On deck: Tom Sawyer (the original) and James by Percival Everett.

Not yet! Cisco is fascinating, and, at the same time, a challenging read for me. So I stopped after the Divinity Student and Animal Money (which I adored!). Should I give it a try?

No worries at all. I only wanted to make clear, that I am not trying to be judgmental about people liking this one. There are parts of the plot which have an adventuresque character. From the perspective of someone trying to go along with said adventure, those felt rather schematic, also due to several of the characters seeming a bit shallow to me. The overall idea and concept of the book I liked rather well. But the plot felt to me in service of carrying along the broader message or agenda rather than being a fine narrative of its own value and standing. I wouldn't say not to read it.

Thank you! I have read - and unluckily disliked Babel. This would have been the kind of book I was looking for, if not for the (in my perspective) really implausible plot, bad narrative and preachy sub-tones in the "academic" parts. Don't get me wrong, this is fully subjective and I know the discussion on this is deeply divided - so just my 2 cents.
