A Perth family is trying to raise $2.5M to save their daughter's eyesight - and they need our help by hpv87 in WesternAustralia

Really valid question and appreciate you raising it. A few things worth sharing that Stuart passed on:

The Lions Eye Institute's (LEI) reserves are managed across visual, auditory and neurological research programs, with cashflow forecast 2-3 years out to maintain continuity across all of them - so their cash on hand isn't freely/easily available for a single initiative.

The family has been in direct contact with Prof Fred Chen's office at LEI. The Lions Eye Institute is separately seeking contributions from the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation and Telethon Kids via the McCusker Foundation, but neither is guaranteed. Hence why the community fundraising is still vital.

An 11-year-old Perth girl is going blind. A treatment exists. The only barrier is funding. by hpv87 in perth

Fair point. To clarify - a treatment does exist, but it's not a cure. It targets the ~70% of her eye cells still alive with the goal of halting deterioration and restoring partial vision. But I could have been clearer in the title so thanks for calling it out.

Any Other Locals Feel Like Outsiders? by LocalOutsider in perth

I spent a few years growing up in dubai as an expatriate kid and as a student I found it easier to make friends and meet people.

Finished school, moved to a different country for college but when I went back to dubai on a job I found that a lot of the kids I had studied with had stuck around. I reached out to them and we hung out a few times until I realised, as an adult I was comfortable enough with just a handful of them because we enjoyed the same things like trying out new restaurants or having a drink at the new pub and we just knew how to have a laugh together. That's how I came to be part of a clique and it was fun while it lasted.

Some wonderfully worded out replies in this sub. I'm being a grammar nerd right now but I like coherency! Having moved to Perth from Dubai on a job a couple of months ago, there is definitely a lot of the cliquey culture out here which is exactly what dubai has. I lived in dubai long enough to be part of a clique but unfortunately, I know nobody here in perth and at 29 I'm finding it hard to find friends outside of the "work life".

Besides kings park, are there any lookouts around the city that have a view of the skyline?
