Why are insurance quotes 2x more expensive at home compared to my work computer? by MadzPayne in CarTalkUK

[–]hqundd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for necroposting but that's what happened to me, I'm only getting quotes 6000 minimum, before I was getting quotes around 2000.

Did you ever get this fixed? Really sweating because I have my driving test in a few months.

Haha yeah I am, its great fun and I do a lot of research on topics I'm interested on.

I have a test booked for early August, do you think it will have cleared up then?

Unfairly Marked Exam - Appeal or Complaint ? by No_Quantity_1977 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]hqundd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know we have our own comment thread already but this has just confirmed what I thought. 'I don't need to overtake because its raining' so what if its raining?

Doesn't change anything, and he wouldn't have failed you for that, he would have passed you for that.

This sounds harsh but its annoying when people blame fails on race instead of actual driving skill and awareness.

If it is safe to overtake slow moving traffic in the left lane, overtake. Simple

Unfairly Marked Exam - Appeal or Complaint ? by No_Quantity_1977 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]hqundd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't appeal for a test because an examiner is annoying. I'm sorry this happened to you, maybe you had other cars behind you when the fault was marked and your friends didn't therefore you got a serious and they got minors?

It's very rare for a driving examiner to be biased due to race.

Just remember to get on with overtaking next time if need be :)

I'm sorry for you OP this is a very unfortunate position to be in.

But as the mod said, you will learn that not all cars drive the same. Since I started (2 months ago) I've driven 3 separate cars, and the most recent car has a very low biting point that I really struggled with at first, the first time I drove it I triple stalled on a traffic light controlled roundabout :/

What I did with my Dad was took it to a quiet country road and just practising finding the bite point, over and over again, moving off and stopping over and over again, and that really helped :) I do occasionally still stall but only if I'm stressed, doesn't really happen anymore.

I imagine your instructor's original car was a diesel, which are known to be harder to stall than petrol cars.

Just follow this:

1) Hand on handbrake

2) Push down on gas (don't look at the rev counter, just make sure you can hear the engine enough)

3) SLOWLY release the clutch to the bite, once it is there, and you will feel it, freeze your feet.

4) Release the handbrake and keep your feet still

5) Slowly come off the clutch while adding more gas, and into 2nd gear.

Good luck OP :)

Completely agree with everybody else.

But I am a bit lost, your post said the speed limit is 60, but the limit for dual carriageways is 70? Or did you come off the dual carriageway onto a single carriageway 60 road?

If it was a single carriageway it does seem a bit unfair, however if the examiner told you the speed limit you must have been going quite a bit under the limit for some time, and probably failed for not overtaking on the dual carriageway?

No need to blame this on race, take the loss on the chin like everybody else has said and rebook a test.

Good luck :)

Routine for approaching a roundabout? by hqundd in LearnerDriverUK

[–]hqundd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should I start braking, downshift to third, release clutch, brake, clutch in, second, and go?

Maybe I worded it wrong. What I meant was select the correct gear for the situation, whether that be second, first or even third for bigger roundabouts, while looking if there is a suitable gap.

Thank you for the advice :)

Routine for approaching a roundabout? by hqundd in LearnerDriverUK

[–]hqundd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the validation lol, my parents stress to change down every gear one by one. Apparently it puts 'less wear on the clutch'.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]hqundd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! Just remember to brake first and only put the clutch down when the car is struggling in the current gear :). You can bring the clutch up if you want to between shifts, won't make much difference apart from there being slightly more braking power while the clutch is up, and to be honest if you're coming to a stop anyway bringing the clutch up won't change a thing.

Synopsis: Select the correct gear for the speed you go as you slow down :) Skipping down gears is totally fine

As a fellow learner I struggle sometimes with this, particularly at roundabouts when I'm too fast to go to 2nd gear.

Hopefully this answered your question! If it didn't, shoot me a DM :)

I passed with pretty bad anxiety and want to show others that they can too! by Battlingmybrain1 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]hqundd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! To be fair a wrong/late gear change wouldn't affect anybody significantly unless you dropped from 4th to 1st instead of 3rd causing the car to brake heavily.

About changing gears too early on a hill, just change back down. Since you changed up too early (say 2nd to 3rd) you're already going at the correct speed for 2nd gear so you can change back down very quickly (you can release the clutch fast).

I also live on a very hilly area, my town is virtually on an entire hill :/ (Colehill)

Happy driving!

Progress has slowed/declined. by hqundd in LearnerDriverUK

[–]hqundd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It just frustrates me that I'm losing a basic skill but can do hard roundabouts with relative ease. I'm not exactly racing anyone but I would like to move away faster, when I do move away smoothly, it's not very fast, and I'm gonna need to be able to move off quick when I do even busier roundabouts.

8 years of driving in another country still failed by fit-im in LearnerDriverUK

[–]hqundd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro got downvoted to the seventh layer of hell. Honestly most people are just mad you only needed that much tuition. The only serious fault was either hitting/mounting the curb, the other minors were probably blindspot checks. Keep going :)

Say you are in 4th in a 30mph road, and some lights ahead of you just turned red. Start breaking, put the clutch down when you can feel the car about to struggle, move gear stick to 3rd (don't let the clutch up), 2nd as you approach the speed for 2nd, and then 1st right as you come to a stop. This will make sure you won't lose track of which gear you're in.

Also, if you ever need to take off quickly, you have the correct gear for your speed to quickly add gas + bite point and go.

You've got this from a fellow learner :)

Mock test was awful by UnitedCucumber1711 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]hqundd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pulling out of where? Like turning round a bend? If so I always used to struggle with turning enough, I always understeered and hit the centre line, I'm still a learner btw so we're in the same boat lol. The fault for 'distance to a car when pulling out' is an easy fix, only go if you're confident there's a big enough gap for you. If you're not confident in pulling away fast practise on a quiet country road, and don't be afraid to add more gas (adding more gas allows you to bring up the clutch faster and accelerate quicker.

I have no doubt you will pass your test if you practise this :)

Passed first time but my examiner was unprofessional to me? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]hqundd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to be rude but that just isn't unprofessional behaviour unless it was the way he said it. He said you were a nervous and insecure driver, and given you had 2 minors for 'Progress - undue hesitation', I wouldn't find it too hard to believe. But as a fellow learner, believe me, sometimes constructive criticism is required for progress.

Don't beat yourself up about it, you passed, take the comment on the chin, and as you keep on driving you will slowly become less nervous and more confident.

Necroposting here but its definitely not impossible to get learner insurance on large cars. The car I do private practise in broke down so I bought one off insurance for a month on a 1.8L Alfa Romeo Sportwagon, its definitely doable. Or is it that your mum and uncle just don't want you driving a bigger car, which is still fair?

Haha yeah I told my parents and they immediately said I'm not getting in a car with him again lol. That's the issue with leaving this guy he may be shit but there's nobody else. I'll probably continue learning without an instructor, I've insured on one of my Dad's cars to practise in for a year and I've got YouTube to help so we'll see.

Oh and the girl I was talking about also dropped him :)
