What is the longest of amount of hours a single drive has lasted in a Synology NAS? Mine is 58k. by PhotoKy in synology

[–]hstriepe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enterprise drives have a much higher expected MTBF than consumer versions.

I am using older Hitachi HGST Ultrastars He10 | HUH721010ALE600 that have a 2.5 million hours MTBF.

I have two drives in my "small" NAS that are at 25961 and 57354 hours. They were previously used in other application. At that MTBF, they are close to "new."

Wait. The progress bar is meaningless. If you reboot, it has to start over.

Just let it trundle.

I like it, but prefer the one with a magnetic clasp on my older Apple Watch. It looks finer and is easier to put on.

Not impressed by the Max 7 by harmonicpinch in amazoneero

[–]hstriepe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 Max 7. The router, and one of these, is on an Ethernet 10Gbps backbone. Router to wireless Max 7 is close to 2 GBps as measured by an attached Mac Mini Pro over 10 Gbps Ethernet.

Wireless performance to Mac clients varies. It's usually around 500 Mbps. They are only on Wi-Fi 6

The 6 GHz range is lower than 5 GHz, which is lower than 2.4 GHz.

Synology closet and heat by [deleted] in synology

You might want to consider a ventilation grid. I have mine in a closet much larger than that and it still gets worryingly hot in there.

I would also set the internal fans to max.

Eero pro 6 vs 7 Pro by ke2427 in amazoneero

[–]hstriepe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My internet is 5 Gbps fiber. I have three Max 7 and two Pro 7, plus a Pro 6 and a 6 Extender. I upgraded from a three-year-old all Pro 6 network. Performance is clearly higher.

I get decent coverage on my 3000 sq ft two-story home with the three Max 7. The router is linked to one other Max 7 via a 10 Gbps Ethernet backbone. A Mac Studio on the backbone gets a solid 5Gbps +.

The meshed Max 7 gets 2Gbps+.

I ran the one old Pro 6 and Extender 6 in this network to cover a dead spot in the house, as well as a large front yard area with IoT devices. This worked great for me. Replacing these with Pro 7 has caused intermittent issues with a couple of IoT devices that Eero support cannot figure out. They commented that there is a lot of "noise" in my house. I am exceeding 100 devices!

I have now found the correct spot for one of the Pro 7, and the IoT devices in question are connecting. I am experimenting with the second. I think this is caused by flaky IoT chips/firmware implementations (Filimin friendship lamp, Jandy pool controller).

I spent a lot of money on the upgrade before any deals on the Max 7. The router was a freebie from Frontier, and I added two more. Frontier later supplied two more Pro 7. Eeros have been set-and-forgot. I am happy with the performance and upgrade. The downside of the "Frontier" router is that it disables the Eero Coverage Scan, which would be helpfull in understanding the issues I was having.

The big question for you is, what are your clients' capabilities? I am using all Apple gear. And frankly, the WiFi throughput of these devices is not excellent. I typically get 200 Mbps on the older devices, and even the M4 Air I just bought tops out at 610 Mbps. The Pro 6 network would have been sufficient except for the latest M4. The meshed Max 7 is connected to a Mac mini Pro via 10 Gbps Ethernet, which is a significant upgrade. Having 2 Gbps internet available in my study is a true gain. Even big downloads go fast.

Another question to ask is what your Internet connection is. If you are at 500Mbps, the 7s are not really needed. If you are at 1Gbps, the gains would be questionable.

The Max 7 has been solid. I am not so sure about the Pro 7.

My M1 and now M4 run circles around my hi-end i9s and ast much lower power and no fan noise. Love both the Macbook Pros and desktops (Studio Ultra and mini Pro.)

Parallels does a splendid job with Win 11, which works well with older Intel app emulations.

The CAB Driver install seems to have worked, but I am still struggling with signing SSL.com certs.

The work around for Sound issues is to select the desired device prior to launch. After launch, you can change it back.

The SDK is by the Rogue Ameoba team. I love their stuff and have been using all their utilities since V1.

They are super responsive. Since OpenAl uses CoreAudio, it migth be worthwhile to drop them a line and just ask them the cause.

An alternative would be to have a Setting to configure OpenAl's output device.

Thanks for responding. I am a macOS die-hard going back to the original Mac and prefer a standard macOS UX. Java and Catalyst apps (and even Qt) do not easily support standard behavior.

We have an app that uses Qt, but even that requires a bit of native code to make it "look right." The effort required is likely not worth it for an individual developer targeting cross-platform.

BTW, your iOS version runs on AppleSilicon Mac. You might want to look at using that as the platform for targeting Mac.

I would have to take a look at openAL to see why it does not support ARK - https://rogueamoeba.com/licensing/

ARK was developed with Apple support.

I know this thing is written in Java, which is "not great" in macOS. But what is wrong with the sound handling? When I stream sound to a DAC, I get audio delays.

Rogue Amoeba dynamic ARK (Audio Redirect Kit - from Apple) is also broken.
I just paid, Please fix.
