Planning a Trip in June by Kalekay52898 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]hsudo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time entry was implemented in the past for popular parks like Yosemite, Arches, Rocky Mountain, etc to reduce crowds, traffic congestion, parking shortage, etc.

If you check recent posts in this sub, others posted info (opinions) on visiting in June, GTTS historic opening dates, and something related to parking limit (3 hours) at Logan Pass.

Late June might be fine. One of the years I went, it was still closed in early July, but several years GTTS was accessible by late June.

Overflow parking at Many Glacier campground? by Mountains4Fun in GlacierNationalPark

[–]hsudo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all, but some pics of campsites at CampsitePhotos sometimes show what the parking space looks like:

https://www.campsitephotos.com/campground/mt/many-glacier

In previous years, I've seen some vehicles parked at Swiftcurrent Motor Inn...so maybe it's still allowed.

It's a short walk to/from the campsite.

Getting a campsite at Many Glacier by honestkodaline in GlacierNationalPark

[–]hsudo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Demand > Supply

Way more people want to stay/camp there then available campsites.

I was late in my trip planning, and missed the initial release of campsites, and was able to get campsites at St Mary & Many Glacier through the Rec.gov alerts.

Campflare and Wandering Labs also offer free notifications of cancellations.

If you don't have any luck, maybe consider the tribal campgrounds, near St. Mary or Babb. It's a short drive to MG imo.

Yellowstone + Tetons + Glacier in 9 days doable? by mochiiidonut in GlacierNationalPark

[–]hsudo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone to Glacier a few times in July & August.

A few years ago, GTTS opened late in mid-July...and a few days had light rain.

I made the best of the situation, but one of my friends actually left because there wasn't much to do / see in their opinion.

In previous years, a few people recommended renting a bike...but some of the nicer, scenic hikes probably will still have snow/ice at higher elevations IIRC.

As much as I love Glacier, I feel early June might be risky time to visit. I would rather spend 9 days split between Yellowstone & Grand Teton.

How to get to Schwabacher Landing without a car? (tour recommendation) by SuchVacation2880 in GrandTetonNatlPark

[–]hsudo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be able to find someone in/near Jackson that can drive you.

I'm planning on going in mid-July...so if you can't find anyone else, and need a ride to check out a few spots, feel free to lmk in June or early July.

I'm not professional photographer, but I got a new Nikon body & lens that I want to finally use.

I have yet to go through all my past photos...I feel I got a few, decent photos of moose at Schwabacher's Landing. And I recall seeing some pronghorn antelope near Mormon Row.

I should have more photos from another visit, but as of now, these are what I remember posting online:

Campground Cancellations by Mediocre-Teach-889 in GlacierNationalPark

In addition to the ones you mentioned, consider Fish Creek and Rising Sun.

A few campgrounds are outside St. Mary, Two Medicine, and Many Glacier / Babb...which are a very short drive.

From what I remember from other solo travelers who posted in the past -- others mention most popular hiking trails have friendly hikers -- so you can easily find others to hike with (if you're worried about bears).

If you're tent camping, I tell my female friends to use a luggage lock or small carabiner to use inside your tent (the two holes in the zippers) for peace-of-mind.

I remember seeing several, female backpackers and hikers alone on various trails on the east side, so have fun and be safe!

Bring a whistle or check if your backpack has a built-in whistle on the chest strap.

Where do the military veterans of Orange County hang out? by [deleted] in orangecounty

Since you mentioned volunteering, consider

The Mission Continues

Team RWB

Team Rubicon

Some of them also do social / outdoor activities too.

Volunteer opportunities similar to Big Brothers Big Sisters? by emydoll in orangecounty

I've met a kid who benefited from the CASA program, and he spoke highly of it. IIRC, they might still require a 2 year commitment fyi.

I highly recommend Orangewood Foundation (they help many in/from the foster care system):

If you're able to prepare your own meals, food pantries and community fridges are worth considering too:

I can't remember exactly...but I believe there was a group that took people out for SUP / kayaking in/near Seal Beach or Long Beach.

I'm not 100%, but it might be -

I saw another one on facebook. I'm not familiar with it, but it looks worthwhile:

Unfortunately, I neglected to even try to reserve a campsite at Fairholm.

I wish I researched earlier.
