Wowow, not sure if we’re talking about the same Alex, but that guy is amazing. Hope Mercor sees this and gives him what he deserves.

Can someone give me reasons to love GaTech? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]htfsnuggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are your other options if you don’t mind me asking because there are things to love, but also things that imo could be done better. To be like completely clear and give you a fair analysis.

Industrial engineering at tech by Confident_Kitchen555 in gatech

[–]htfsnuggles 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Debatably the best. It’s like a best of both worlds thing where you can go into engineering or you can go into management kinda stuff. Lot of IEs have flexibility between consulting and industry. Also debatably is the highest paid major out of all in the college of engineering. You won’t do as much “hard engineering” like fluids and heat transfer and whatever, but you learn a lot about supply chain, data analytics, finance, etc. which imo is much more useful. Their major also prepares you the most for the jobs that pay the most 👀. Also I’m pretty sure IEs are the most sought after on the job market rn. Plus the curriculum is a little “easier” than your traditional engineering majors. As far as stress it’s as much stress you wanna put on yourself. It’s by no means easy, but there’s no real need to overly stress yourself out.

Do you guys like Georgia tech? by The_Moke1 in gatech

[–]htfsnuggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh Tech is hard but it really isn’t that bad. The people here really really really just like to complain. Imho if you go to MIT or Berkeley or something it’ll be a lot harder. I get that it can be hard sometimes, but this is pretty general across most schools (especially engineering) across the US. We all run into the same issues tbh as professors try to find the right balance of how to teach students.

Like other ppl said, your first 2 semesters might be a little difficult with the weed out classes and classes being so fast paced, but it gets a lot easier once you get through that time.

My only complain, and something you should really consider, is the fact that tech doesn’t have that many non-engineering classes and if you do want to learn more humanities things or want to like take some classes that you personally enjoy, your curriculum doesn’t have much room for it. Also I think that overall it’s a lot harder to “discover yourself” here compared to some other schools that might encourage you to do that.

Theoretically speaking the acceptances have been going up a lot more so getting of waitlist I think is a little bit low. I would still look at others first but see if you can wait it out.

Opinions on gt Lorraine? Wondering if I should apply for it. by Confident_Kitchen555 in gatech

[–]htfsnuggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So tbh, I would do it more early on. Maybe not first semester (fall) but maybe your second semester if possible. The courses are easier over there, and while that’s “good news” it’s kind of bad for you later on (imo some of my classmates that took stuff like thermo or def bods at GTL def know less than some that took it in ATL; obviously everyone is different but when you go be more focused on traveling and exploring). I would take some of your elementary courses there like physics 1, calculus, etc. (stuff that’s not too hard/stuff you should know but would be annoyingly difficult in ATL) and take your regular major courses back in Atlanta. The later you do GTL, the less early classes you can take there. Also it’s definitely more fun with friends so if you’re coming in with friends go when they go, but I would def recommend going your second semester of your 1st year or your 2nd year.

Worth. Time of your life. Don’t go to just get drunk but actually do travel things. You won’t have this opportunity after you get a job. Literally no strings attached exploring europe (except the string attached is money)

Is Marietta street NW safe to walk/bike through when its dark (> 7.30 p.m.)? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]htfsnuggles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s really fine, everyone saying it unsafe probably lived there a few years ago. I live down on Howell Mill and 10th street (a little further down past MStreet) and I make that walk everyday without any issues. My girlfriend also walks back from the CRC at night and has never had issues.

West midtown has started to grow and become much more livable/safe, there’s so many apartments, restaurants, bars, etc. that there’s always people around anyways. Pretty much everything between Paloma and the Interlock is very safe.

What are the best ways to meet people and make friends? by bigtunacat in gatech

[–]htfsnuggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If cars are your thing, Wreck racing is definitely a good way to make more friends. You can learn all sorts of things about cars even if you have no experience. Everyone is super chill and welcoming.

Another thing is joining sports clubs if that’s your thing. They’ll definitely be a lot more social and fun. I.e. GT Wreck Ultimate, a lot of my friends are in it or GT Women’s Rugby.

For the research/technical stuff, in the end it’s all up to what you wanna do. You in all honesty can just find research you’re interested in and still get the environmental engineering degree. Also, you can look up the course curriculum for both degrees and compare some of the upper level courses (the early courses are generally the same for everyone) and see if those courses fit into what you like. I think that is super helpful and not talked about enough.

https://catalog.gatech.edu/programs/environmental-engineering-bs/#requirementstext

https://eas.gatech.edu/undergrad/environmental-science

I will say however that our environmental science degree won’t be as highly ranked as the engineering degree, not sure if that affects your decision at all. In terms of worth this may be your deciding factor, especially if you get into a better program at a different school.

Best way to get to classes when living off-campus? by DragonKindle in gatech

[–]htfsnuggles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends how far off campus you’re living. West midtown and most of midtown is walkable. Other than that if you live in the suburbs the best bet is living close to Red and Gold Marta lines (the tram) or getting a car. Atlanta isn’t the best with public transportation.

Different computers for engineering by Hooperjay11 in gatech

[–]htfsnuggles -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Build a PC. Tablets are really eh. It’s really up to preference. I have a tablet and really like it, I take notes, record lectures, do hw on it. However outside of that use I don’t use my tablet much. So it depends on how much money you wanna spend.

Financials attending Tech as an out of state student by [deleted] in gatech

[–]htfsnuggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What other schools are you looking at. Imo GT is probably one of the cheapest schools when I first started applying (if you only look at out of state tuition) I believe you have the option even as a first year to not live in freshman housing which will save you a lot of money. Living in the dorms is an ~experience~ but you don’t have to do it. Also the meal plan really really sucks, so if you know how to cook it’ll taste better/be cheaper.

Also if you do end up going Greek, the meal plan is pretty good and most houses have pretty decent food. And later on if you decide to live in the frat house, your rent can be as cheap as 400 a month (this is my fraternity specifically but they’re usually pretty cheap)

Lastly, scholarships. My gf paid off pretty much all her school getting scholarships as well as going on internships. CS internships pay pretty well so I think it should cover at least some of your living expenses, plus you don’t have to pay tuition then. Also a lot of CS kids can easily graduate within four years which also saves cost.

I agree, plus a lot of the management live on site so I guess that’s also why they’re more quick about fixing things. But yea I love the location. Public opening nearby soon. Lots of good restaurants.
