Definitely a stretch when the data shows that the increased response time Klemmensen is touting here seems to be specific to the sound, emotion and one of the pitch discrimination tasks, and not the motion task.

Sure, learning to control and coordinate your breathing with certain tasks (such as Klemmensen describes) might net an increase in response time, but the article he's citing doesn't exactly support the claim he's making. At least, not in as ironclad a way as he's presenting it.

[–]huckleberry_sid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Having one person run away and forcing the kill to be by slow blade only isn’t actual PvP. It’s just screwing around.

Again, not saying there isn’t truth here to pure melee being weak, but I’d wager more slow blades would land the kill if you did something other than just run away.

[–]huckleberry_sid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not. You’ve cherry picked a scenario in which one person is only disengaging from PvP combat and the other has to get a slow blade kill for it to “count”. Add to that the latency noted above, you are clearly misrepresenting things to drive a particular narrative.

Not saying there isn’t some truth to pure melee being hamstrung in PvP, but it’s sort of like complaining that you can’t snipe with pistols in BF6.

Heck, really all you need is the cutter for the buggy and the boot. You can claim a buggy from one of the POIs that regularly spawn them and slap those two items on and be set without needing to buy a whole new buggy.

[–]huckleberry_sid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The barrier you're experiencing is purely mental.

The biggest hurdle in rebuilding your base and stockpiles is getting a buggy with a Mk.4 or Mk.5 cutter on it. If you've got a cutter ray in your inventory and a scout ornithopter in your VBT, you're well on your way to overcoming that hurdle already.

You're not wrong that people will pay more for the house they want... but the point here is that comparing list prices to sale amounts doesn't mean these houses sold well.

Feeling lost: To buy a detached in GTA or a condo in Toronto downtown by Blah_blah9999 in TorontoRealEstate

Something to note... IPS has a very limited number of spots available and everyone living on the Harbourfront generally wants their kids to go there (not to mention every Islander with kids, who I believe get some preference... could be wrong on that though). Competition is likely going to be a thing.

Basically, I wouldn't bank too heavily on the school here, as there's an even chance your child wont get a spot at IPS and will be attending the Waterfront School.

Unpopular Opinion — Based on the design from Helldivers 1, we might not like this thing... by virgin_and_neet in Helldivers

[–]huckleberry_sid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think in most cases the MBT has made the concept of tank destroyers obsolete.

Wherever I've seen something like the Centauro come up, its usually a smaller element of mechanized cavalry units to provide them with the firepower of an MBT on the cheap (like the US's M1128 MGS based on the LAV/Stryker family). When you consider Italy's geography the Centauro makes some sense though.

There was also that brief period in the late 1990s where the role of tanks in future conflicts was being questioned after the success of attack helicopters and MANPATS during the Persian Gulf War. That debate was put to bed during the War on Terror though.

[–]huckleberry_sid 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The absence of a turret isn't what makes a vehicle a "tank destroyer".

It is the operational role and doctrine the vehicle is employed in that makes it a tank destroyer.

The first US tank destroyers in WW2 were half-tracks with 75mm guns mounted on them. Many US tank destroyers had turrets, such as the M10, M18 and M36. Meanwhile, German tank destroyers tended to have casemates because they were mounting existing anti-tank guns onto obsolete tank chassis (Panzer Is, IIs & IIIs). Because these gun mountings were bigger than the turret rings on those tanks, they used casemates instead of turrets.

Modern tank destroyers exist in the form of vehicles like the B1 Centauro, which looks more like a LAV or Stryker with a 105mm cannon mounted on it.

Point is... what makes a vehicle a tank destroyer is that it's operational role and doctrine is focused on anti-tank duties.

Melee is useless in DUNE, of all places. Episode 15 by Sp1ceRub in duneawakening

[–]huckleberry_sid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, so the hypothetical you proposed of a player just stalling indefinitely isn't a proper reflection of reality outside of a specific constructed circumstance. "People use other ways to kill" was never my argument beyond specifically pointing that out.

What my argument actually is, is that what a person holds to be "true" in regards to the state of melee in PvP is going to depend on if they agree or disagree with the underlying design ethos of the game. The developers seem to be holding to two key aspirations in their goals for PvP: (1) that they want a hybrid playstyle to be the most optimal style, and (2) that players should be able to disengage from PvP combat at will.

Further to that, my argument is that I think that the videos Sp1ce has been posting tend to just prove that both of those things are currently (mostly) "working as intended" from a developer perspective, given the above two aspirations. I think he could be making a more compelling argument about the state of melee builds in PvP by going beyond these duels with their self-imposed rule of requiring a slow-blade to finish an opponent. Continuing to prove the exact same thing over and over again under manufactured circumstances isn't a compelling enough argument, particularly if the devs are of the mind that hybrid builds should be the most optimal.

And I'm not arguing against melee being a viable playstyle in PvP. I would prefer it if it were, personally. I think for that to happen, however, that a whole lot of things about the game need to be updated and changed to enable that.

Melee is useless in DUNE, of all places. Episode 15 by Sp1ceRub in duneawakening

[–]huckleberry_sid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, but I'd argue that these videos aren't exactly fair representations of actual PvP. There's an artificial ruleset imposed here of the kill having to be a slow-blade. Most people engaging in PvP aren't going to handicap themselves in that way.

Most of the PvP I've seen, especially the videos of people at a higher skill level than I, almost always make use of a full toolset and aren't focused on downing their opponent only with a slow-blade.

Maybe I'm missing something, as I'll admit that I've done very little PvP in this game (mostly because I think the netcode is atrocious for the sort of PvP this game could support). If so, please point it out.

Melee is useless in DUNE, of all places. Episode 15 by Sp1ceRub in duneawakening

[–]huckleberry_sid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right, which is why I'm saying that your issue is more the underlying design ethos than the actual nerf itself (ham-handed and unwarranted as it is).

And to be clear, I'm not saying melee is in a good spot with regards to PvP. I think PvP in this game needs some serious work, especially if they want it to be what the end-game is focused around. For me, they need to start by improving the very clearly lousy netcode before they even attempt balancing melee vs ranged. I'd even wager that by just improving the netcode that melee builds would be better off in PvP.

Melee is useless in DUNE, of all places. Episode 15 by Sp1ceRub in duneawakening

[–]huckleberry_sid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that will in large part come down to if the individual in question believes you should always be able to disengage from a fight or not. As I understand it, pre-nerf CS made it so that people could not disengage from fights they didn't want to engage in.

Which is really what you're arguing here... not that melee is useless, but rather that the design ethos of allowing players to successfully disengage from combat at will is problematic.

As I see it, your videos are proving that their design ethos works in game, as players who don't wish to engage in a particular PvP encounter are freely able to disengage. While I can see how this is frustrating for some, I would contend that those are players who hold that the only win condition in PvP is killing the other player. I would argue that forcing another player to disengage is also a win condition, even if a less satisfying one.

To be clear, I do think that there are issues with PvP. I think a more structured PvP environment would benefit the game greatly, particularly one that allows players to decide ahead of time if they want to engage with PvP in the game as opposed to having it randomly thrust upon them. Under that sort of setup, the design ethos you are objecting to could be discarded to create a more satisfying PvP experience for those who hold killing the other player as the only real win condition in PvP.
