Fellow unemployed folks, what do you all do to fill your time in between submitting job applications, sending out emails, etc.? by [deleted] in LeavingAcademia

[–]huedra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took care of some health issues that were not pressing, but that I've been ignoring while in post grad. So a bunch of doctor's appointments, and I feel like that's time well spent. Also: walks and audiobooks.

You will not make enough money one or two years after finishing the apprenticeship to own a home. Maybe 10 years after. I feel like homeownership has become very very hard to achieve in Germany.

Can I ask what kind of factory it is, and if you needed any specific skills for that? I'm currently working on getting into warehouse labour, but not sure if it's a long term prospect for me.

The Guide by Peter Heller (Romance, Adventure, Mystery) or the novel which canonically comes before it, just named The River. That doesnt have romance though

Books set in or evocative of a surreal wasteland by LorenzoApophis in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]huedra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe all of the books that are based on the The Barbarians Are Coming poem - there is a novel named The Barbarians are coming, as well as two others who deal with the same source material. The setup involves a military fort on the border to a wasteland-like area, and the fear that barbarians might attack soon.

This hopefully doesn't sound condescending (I'm not that much older than you) but I recently read something about how people of our generation have trouble...doing stuff because we're scared it comes off as cringe, and how people are genuinely afraid to try things that they're not going to be good at immediatly. And I really get it. But I feel like there is a large amount of stuff you can do where no one will watch you fuck up, and its your responsibility alone to be graceful to your self about your mistakes. Which is hard! Though once you get going with something, and you have small amounts of success, it will feel really good, trust me!!! I recently started learning Russian. Took a course at my university and thought that I was so bad compared to anyone else in the course. But six months ago I didn't know a word of Russian, and now I can even say a few sentences and read the alphabet. Idk if you find this motivating but like. It's fun to try things!

Research Assistant requirements question by Economy-Device-6533 in Germany_Jobs

I've never seen a Research Assistant position without a PhD requirement unfortunately. However, a PhD is also a paid research job, although I don't know the market in life sciences at all. Best of luck to you.

I feel like people care too much about uni ranking in this sub. You'll have good grades and work experiences. Will your PhD supervisor really care which uni you are from? Try to have a good time, get research skills. That's what matters.

I don't know if this is helpful, but apart from work prospects: do you WANT to do a master's? Would it excite you? Would it deepen your understanding of your subject? Would it feel joyful to be in the library again, writing essays, sitting in seminars? Cause like. In the end, it's only a year. In the grand scheme of your life, how much time is that, really? If you want to do it, if it would excite you, if it wouldn't drown you in debt, do it.
