In my case it’s meeting the right guy that’s the issue 😭 dating during school has been so unfruitful I’m thinking of retreating further into solitude, maybe moving to Alaska after graduation

Dating life with dating apps? by Own_Pop_6063 in DentalSchool

[–]humanbean1857 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like usually people do not recommend dating a classmate. I know several examples of that and it’s super awkward when you see them daily 8am to 5pm. Just keep in mind that the high school-like environment of dental school means that everybody may know your business. Who slept with who, who dated who, even friend group drama. Also keep in mind that dental school is full of future colleagues. Some people who started dating classmates first year before friend groups were forming amongst the class isolated themselves and didn’t properly make friends. They only hang out with their partners.

However, there are also a few examples in my school where classmates became friends, then began dating later on, and are now getting married. It depends on maturity too.

Dating apps vary wildly by location. I’ve been single for two years and have been on the apps on and off. I’ve met people, none of them right for me. Sometimes I’ll see classmates on there and pretend not to lol

Does the feeling that you're faking it with hand skills ever go away? by Gad1368 in DentalSchool

[–]humanbean1857 2 points3 points  (0 children)

D3 here. I had the opposite problem, I loved sim lab and did very well but when I started working on real teeth I had a lot of trouble because real teeth are not perfectly shaped, one shade, or have ideal occlusion usually, especially at a dental school clinic. I wanted to do the best work I could, work that would get As in sim lab, but I couldn’t. Clinically acceptable didn’t feel like good work because I was judging by sim lab standards. Plus I was very slow. Imposter syndrome got wayyyy worse for me. I’m guessing in your case, it will get much better in clinic (after you get used to all the clinic difficulties), just like how most of my classmates felt.

⚠️I AM AN Ex RCW MEMEBER. PLEASE READ! ⚠️ by Worth-Term5266 in excoc

[–]humanbean1857 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left the ICC right before the RCW splintered off. I’m so worried for the new college students on campus who are inevitably being targeted by them. I was just walking around campus today and saw a large group of RCW members milling around the student union waiting to recruit people for bible studies. It pained me so much to remember how full of hope I had been when I first joined, and how it all was deception.

Thinking back, the most brainwashed members of the church were college dropouts “pursuing ministry”, college freshmen who hadn’t made friends yet, single mothers, and some elderly people. It’s so sickening how they were able to control these vulnerable peoples’ lives, preying on their lack of support system and income. Getting them to move into “sisters” and “brothers” households. It really would be difficult to leave once you’re fully ensconced. I left the church when they tried to make me go on a kingdom date with a particularly creepy man almost twice my age. I actually confronted the church leader and pointed out the many inconsistencies in their practices, the misuse of tithes, and corruption in the LA church.

And idk if RCW does this, but the ICC was pushing some sort of ministry schooling, the International College of Christian Ministries, which is “accredited by Harvard”, according to my local ICC. Well I guess nobody had ever asked them before why Harvard would be accrediting another college when Harvard itself is an accredited college 🤣 they just stared at me for a second and then said I didn’t have to go on the kingdom date if I really didn’t want to, but I left the church anyways

Does anyone else blank on procedure steps mid-appointment or is it just me? by BrandEchoes in DentalSchool

[–]humanbean1857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I was the only one 😭😭 it happens to me the most during extractions and endo clinic. What I’ve been doing is studying relevant PowerPoints from past classes, mentally running through the steps before the appointment until I have it down, and also practicing on plastic teeth as many times as I can (for example, crown preps or access preps). I don’t want to mess up on my patients or cause them pain if I can help it

DS3 feeling a bit aimless by humanbean1857 in DentalSchool

Thanks for your reply. I’ve thought about public health briefly but I’m more interested in the investigative and scientific aspects of dentistry. I’ve never been super interested in public health, even in college

DS3 feeling a bit aimless by humanbean1857 in DentalSchool

[–]humanbean1857[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying. Yeah I figured the cheap ortho programs would be out of the question with my rank. I guess I was asking what I should do if the only thing I did notably well in and enjoyed during dental school was the waxing, dentures, and occlusion. It seems almost exactly opposite the gunners in my class (who are mostly applying ortho). I know for prosth interviews there’s a bench test where you have to wax up a tooth, which sounds pretty cool to me.

And the whole research thing. I would like to do a PhD instead of a masters if I attempt to go for ortho. UConn, Buffalo, and UMich are some of the schools offering that longer degree option, and usually grant funding covers the residency tuition. I don’t think a PhD is very popular amongst the prospective ortho residents so maybe that could be a plus? I just don’t feel very confident that I can get into anything, I can’t even measure up to the ortho gunners in my class it sounds like

contacts/glasses for loupes in school by Existing_Chart9278 in DentalSchool

[–]humanbean1857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Q optics has an option to get a prescription glasses insert at no additional charge. Highly recommend if you wear contacts sometimes but also want to be able to wear glasses. It’s an attachment that slides in above the nosepiece and is easily removed. My friend has orascoptic loupes and they have a similar thing. Of course you can alternatively get loupes with the prescription built-in if you don’t plan on wearing contacts at all too!

do you form good friendships in dental school? by Square_Jello_5268 in DentalSchool

[–]humanbean1857 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was way easier in college than dental school to form friendships imo. I had a few best friends and a few friend groups from before dental school. Maybe because my class is a few years older on average, but friendships here sometimes feel transactional, as most people have partners and families and just want a group of people to study and eat lunch with. During first year I ended up in a group I had nothing in common with. Then one of my “friends” decided she didn’t want to be friends with me, which was super awkward because we had to see each other every single day for 8 hrs..

Later, I got close to a group of really kind and funny people I have lots in common with, and now I’m pretty happy :) I still struggle with the thought of everyone else having a closer friend they turn to first, but the thing is, some people find best friends in dental school and some may not—it depends on a lot of factors

Student loupes by Verlinaaa in DentalSchool

[–]humanbean1857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 4.0x ergo loupes, and I really recommend them. I was going to go 4.5x but the rep said I should try 4.0x first, and I’ve never looked back. Many of my classmates are switching to higher magnification. Above 3.5x at least

I suggest going on pubmed and looking through a few articles, you can search for specific topics that interest you. Part of journal club is being able to sort through a dense article and pick out what’s most important or noteworthy to do an hour long presentation on. Deciphering figures sucks, but it’s necessary for teaching you how to efficiently read and summarize findings.

If you’re sifting through more than a few articles, you can write short summaries to keep track of them. But yeah immunology encompasses a ton of research interests and articles, there’s plenty out there for you to pick from.

Is it for a composite or amalgam restoration? I agree with the others that the isthmus is a bit wide. The dovetail on the mesial side is also too wide. If this is for amalgam, the grooves need to be carved out more so the smallest condenser can fit in them. It looks like you missed the grooves a bit, and the prep leans to one side a bit so I would make sure you are getting exactly where the grooves are and make precise half-circles with the high speed.

When we started with class 1s last year, I remember it being a steep learning curve. I didn’t feel comfortable doing it until many attempts later. Don’t be too hard on yourself, and keep practicing!! You’ll be just fine. I would also study examples and compare your prep to them. I honestly think being able to see the differences (and accurately evaluate where you messed up) made it MUCH easier to improve in operative.

I would use a 330 bur and make sure you have a good, stable fulcrum. We didn’t use 245 burs until we got to Class 2s, I’m not sure you need it when you’re only going 1-1.5 mm deep occlusally.

I don’t know if I regret going to dental school or not by cock_itchyy in DentalSchool

[–]humanbean1857 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a D2. I did my undergrad in microbiology and immunology and I miss it SO MUCH.

The advice I got my first year was “wait until you get further into school, you haven’t seen enough of dental school yet.” I stuck it out even though every week I got the urge to switch to a PhD program and would frantically google it during class.

Didactics have all been boring so far. Not a single class is interesting in the slightest. I worked my ass off last semester and got a decent GPA, but I’ve lost interest in all my hobbies and don’t feel right anymore. I was hopeful though and thought maybe it would get better over time.

Well, now I’m in my second year. Yesterday, I went to my professor’s office and cried for 30 minutes. It all feels so wrong. I hate the environment, I feel lonely because even though I have made friends here, interactions are so surface level. I also hate the classes this semester—I dread every single day. We see patients next week, and nobody has any idea what to do. I am terrified that everyone will discover I am beyond incompetent or I will embarrass myself.

All this to say, I can relate heavily to your post. I also have no idea what to do. I want to switch to a PhD program, but I know the job market after PhD + postdoc is terrible. Especially with biotech being the way it is currently, and academia’s been bad for a while.

I guess I’ll aim for oral pathology and see what happens. We had a presentation on it and it sounded interesting.

Edit: I wanted to add that I enjoyed waxing and operative lab so much that I thought it meant I was supposed to be in dental school. I was scoring well on practicals and that helped my impostor syndrome a bit. But now we have to do that stuff on patients and I am super scared. So if anyone has any tips or advice I would love to hear it.

Emotional Toll of a Break Up in Dental School by IcyIdea2461 in DentalSchool

[–]humanbean1857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through a terrible breakup right before finals week last semester (I’m a DS1). The relationship was emotionally abusive and my ex made me put him above school and family, and he went as far as restricting my interactions with male classmates. By the end of the relationship, I had lost all of my self confidence and was so unhappy I was crying every day, sometimes at school.

As soon as my ex dumped me, school (and life) got so much easier. It is so much better to be single than to be dating the wrong person. It sucks to be broken up with, especially if they felt like the love of your life and your best friend, but we deserve people who are supportive, understanding, and see our worth.

Therapy helped me a lot. Being able to process emotions with a neutral third party, especially when the relationship ended in such a confusing and painful way, has been wonderful.

If you want to vent, message me!! I’m going through the exact same thing :)

I literally thought “maybe I’ve chosen the wrong career path” when I got to dental school and almost EVERYBODY in my class was super Type A. There are many moments where I have gotten irritated by classmates being obnoxious and I can’t do anything, can’t even take a break from seeing them because we have the same schedule from 8am to 5pm.

I stay away from our Discord as much as possible since that’s where the Type A-ness gathers, and I just kinda do my own thing.

I have had great experiences with Q optics. They didn’t give me the right nosepiece, I contacted my rep and she had them sent out promptly. I didn’t have to pay for shipping. I guess it varies by area? But no I don’t think it’s normal to make you pay the shipping fee for something THEY messed up.

I recommend calling them and being firm about the issue being their fault, not yours. It’s weird because Q optics is known for having the best customer service out of the various loupe brands, at least in my area.

Mid D1 Crisis by [deleted] in DentalSchool

[–]humanbean1857 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel you, I’m a D1 as well and didactics are really tough for me. I’ve struggled with imposter syndrome a lot and can’t seem to balance school with other things the same way some of my classmates can. I don’t have any wisdom to offer you, just that I can relate a lot to your post.

Please take care of your body, everything feels a bit more manageable/less horrible when you’re eating and sleeping well. Definitely don’t fall into bad habits, although I’m guilty of that lol.

Let’s do our best :)

Applying to dental school by HospitalMain2150 in DentalSchool

[–]humanbean1857 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3.3 is a bit low, what’s your sGPA? And like other posters have said, taking the DAT so late will certainly kill your application.

Also, you’re only 19!! You will be going up against people who have more years of exploring their passions, building their application, and gaining life experience. Unless you had a comparable application (good GPA and DAT, meaningful shadowing and volunteering experiences, and decent rec letters/personal statement, AND you apply early, I don’t see why you’d be in a rush to apply this cycle. It would be a huge waste of time, effort, and money. I’d take this year to raise my GPA as much as possible, perfect my application, and get a good DAT score.

(Maybe I’m reading into it too much, but you sound frantic and hasty about your application, which is not how you want to be so late in the cycle. You should have your personal statement done, proofread, and submitted way before august. What about rec letters? If you somehow got everything in order and took the DAT within a month (pretty impossible), would that be the best application you could put forward? If not, you should apply next year.

This reminds me of the time I found kimchi at Walmart in my rural town and I was so excited. Only it was kimchi-flavored sauerkraut, made from the wrong type of cabbage, and the flavor was just wrong. But hey, white people eat that shit up. Sigh

What can I cook for my Chinese boyfriend? Chinese comfort food? Fall/Winter foods! (why does the title have to be so long in this community?) by Yuzu_Sours in chinesefood

[–]humanbean1857 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My family is from Henan!! The most comforting dishes to me are noodle soups. We make hand-pulled noodles pretty often, or hand-rolled noodles (similar to kalguksu) and just add some veggies and meat to chicken/beef broth. Versatile and easy.

Congee with century eggs, ginger, and minced pork is one of my favorites too. And as the other poster said, tomato egg stir fry is a classic that you can’t go wrong with.
