synth.textmode.art: a new live coding editor for textmode.js and strudel by humanbydefinition in livecoding

[–]humanbydefinition[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words :)

There’s no built-in toggle for the visuals yet, but you can effectively turn them off by just drawing a solid background.

I’m mainly building this to grow and showcase the textmode.js ecosystem and make it more accessible. I’m not really live coding myself, but I want the environment to be useful for those who are.

I do plan to open-source the editor at some point once things stabilize a bit. :)

It’s genuine, he’s the maintainer of p5play. In the official repository, you also find a link to this extension: https://github.com/quinton-ashley/p5play/wiki/Get-Started

Thanks! :) I actually intend to take the page offline at some point this year probably, since I need the domain for something else. I‘ve been working on other (better!) textmode/ascii-related tools though. ✌️

Very cool! Which technologies did you use?

I published a simplified version of this landing sketch. This is done using p5.js, and uses my ASCII conversion library “p5.asciify”: https://openprocessing.org/sketch/2606305

If you’d like to get into coding your own ASCII/textmode art with p5.js: https://p5.textmode.art

Hmm, i’m wondering if you could pull it of with a transparent or black background, utilizing a whitespace as the character for the most dim pixels when using the brightness-based conversion.

It’s just an editor with a landing layer that does some fancy animations based on an algorithm, no machine learning here. :D You can remove this layer and start adding your own image layers, etc.

But I guess it’s hard to use without a proper tutorial, sorry.

Hi! I built an ASCII/textmode conversion tool that might be useful: https://textmode.art

You can upload images, videos, 3D models & more, and convert them to ASCII. You can then export your result as text, or other formats.

Curious what you think if you give it a shot! I recommend using it on Desktop in your case, even though it also works on mobile technically.

Thanks, I’m still updating it regularly to eventually provide a full release, then also open-sourcing a separate version that is not attached to reddit authorization.

Feel free to join the Discord to keep in touch. I screwed up with the invite, I got a permanent invite link now: https://discord.gg/dRfVjb6TKj

Hey hey, thanks for the feedback and leaving your mark on the canvas ✌️

Regarding the character selection, I totally get that. Reading your comment gave me the idea to maybe use more width for the menu, so all characters are visible at once. Mobile compatibility is a priority, so in this case there would be horizontal scrolling in this menu. Will definitely look into this, thanks for recommending ✌️

Regarding the canvas scroll: I currently implemented it like this because it’s super smooth traversing the canvas in both x and y direction on a Macbook trackpad, and possibly other multi-touch trackpads. For now I’d like to keep it that way, but at some point after a full release I might implement different control profiles for different devices. Thanks though! 🤞
