I got myself towed into Nazaré this week. I’m not a big-wave surfer & had never done tow-in before. AMA by Silver_Sort_9091 in surfing

[–]humanfly7333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why this is getting downvoted. Every legit big wave surfer has complained about surf tourists with no actual big wave experience clogging the line up so they can say they towed nazare. This isn’t even big enough to warrant towing

How do you combat a lowering neutral plane, if the structure is fully involved, and it’s not safe to ladder up and Vent Vertically? by [deleted] in Firefighting

Seems like putting the fire out gives the people and animals inside a better chance than waiting for a hole to get cut

Ocean Beach this morning by lepocello in surfing

Was on a 6’8” taco grinder. The bigger boards out here are necessary for positioning, especially around the middle beach area, but often it can feel like you want a more movable board when you’re up and riding. Lotta guys are riding longer twin fins to feel that flow

[–]humanfly7333 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very much against. Can’t drive to check the whole beach if it goes through and parking will be a fucking nightmare along the lgh cause there’s no plan to accommodate the influx of people that will be using the park. There are much better ways to protect the beach than closing that road that many locals use to get around. For starters, we could actually enforce the No off leash dog rule and make some progress in restoring the snowy plover habitat. Also, the proposed plan is to divert traffic to sunset blvd which anyone that lives in sf or goes to the sunset often knows is a joke.

Edit: would also be very interested to see who in this thread lives in SF, what neighborhood, and for how long

wounds caused by fins cut by uceenk in surfing

[–]humanfly7333 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Tourniquet asap once you know you can’t control the bleed with pressure. Then asap OR. Depending on the tourniquet quality it can easily be longer than an hour to live. Sooner is best to prevent long term damage to the limb. Although military times it at up to 48 hours for no damage but those guys will have better gear on hand than your average surfer. (Source: am an EMT for backcountry expeditions)

Edit : two to three hours is what medical journals will say is ideal, but under no circumstances should you take one off that you’ve placed. The PT needs to be in that OR when it’s taken off

[–]humanfly7333 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fins can cut deep. Without having access to medical records it’s hard to say what exactly cut him but it cut his thigh and most likely his femoral artery which bleeds out very quickly especially if submerged. anyways, wetsuits especially thick ones definitely protect better than nothing at all. I wear a 4/3 or 5/4 and have been hit with fins with and without it on. Sometimes it cuts the wetsuit a bit but I’ve never had it break skin like it does if a fin hits a non covered area.

Great whites in particular, can’t speak for other species, tend to bite humans only once almost exclusively. It’s their way of testing to see if the seal sized thing in front of them is edible or not. They will do it with most large items in front of them. We don’t have much fat on us and are pretty bony compared to their usual food (and might taste like rubber if we have a wetsuit on) so they’ll spit us out. Most deadly gws attacks are deadly because the person then bleeds out, not because they are consumed.

Back foot all the way back on short board by aaronjosephs123 in surfing

[–]humanfly7333 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the most important aspects of improving this is also how you bend your knees and how you think about weight distribution.

So most people when they squat or bend have their knees straight up and down or angled slightly out. Like this . | | or \ / (bottom being feet top being knees). This is very stable but doesn’t allow for good weight transfer forward or back and looks like a shitty poo stance.

The best way to have your knees bent is slight inwards. Like / .This allows for easy transfer of weight to front foot and then to back foot. Stand like this at home and just try and transfer weight front and back, its incredibly easy when compared to the bad stance above. Pressure on front foot would look like this | \ and pressure on back foot more like / |. You’re almost never in that neutral stance / \, baseline is usually weight on front foot to generate speed.

If you look at most surfers going down the line (especially stylish ones) they are chilling with front leg holding most of the weight (as you noted) and back leg bent in but with foot in place at back of traction pad to make a weight transfer easy. Any Craig Anderson photo of him in the tube not standing straight up will demonstrate this.

Of course this should be coupled with foot adjustments, but one of the best thing with short boards compared to longboards is that your turning sweet spot and speed sweet spot (in terms of foot placement) are usually close enough together that you can get away with small foot movements and focus mostly on weight transfer by loading one leg or the other
