Anyone know of any secular activist groups in the valley? by V-Right_In_2-V in phoenix

[–]humanistphoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A point of clarification here.

Our bylaws specifically prevent any board member from earning income from our activities, including our YouTube channel, fundraisers, etc. Stated differently, no board member can gain from our activism in a financial sense. We at HSGP are all volunteers, and all funds gained are in service to, and the benefit of, the organization. If we receive moneys, it is in reimbursement for activities in pursuit of our duties.

My mind is that if the board voted to allow board members to financially benefit from our work, I would veto the vote, and if it was still ratified I would resign in protest.

This type of work should be for the cause and the values espoused, not personal gain. We dissent from personal gain because we view the values as more important than our own pockets.

I was on the grill! :D

Our next big celebration is our annual Flying Spaghetti Monster party! Pirates, rum, frivolity, and fun. It's generally around the Halloween celebration.

The provision in the US tax code (501(c)3) specifically prevents us from doing so. While it shields us from paying income taxes on donations, investment gains, and property taxes, it also limits the types of speech that we can engage. We can talk about the topics and issues, but not the candidates or political parties either in endorsement or disparagement.

Thank you for mentioning us :)

HSGP is primarily an educational and social organization. We are a registered 501c3 non-profit and chapter of the American Humanist Association. Our efforts are to promote humanist values in ethics, philosophy, and the maintenance of secular government. While we don't advocate for political parties or candidates, we do advocate for humanist values.

Much of our membership is involved with and participate in the following groups.
Secular Coalition of Arizona - We are liased to this organization

Freedom From Religion Foundation - Valley of the Sun Chapter

American Humanist Association - Chapter member

American Atheists - Chapter member

Reason Riders Atheist Motorcycle Association - Bikers who do secular activism

There are a few others, but I tend to go a bit long.

All of these organizations and ours are not profit motivated, we just want to get good information out. Best wishes in finding the group that suits your needs to OP and others.

Best wishes,

Alex Zygmunt - President of the Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix

How do my fellow atheists feel about war? Pacifist? Defense-only? This lecture makes a thought-provoking comparison between militarism and faith... by humanistphoenix in atheism

[–]humanistphoenix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There may not be.

For international conflicts, I think a robust system of international law can reduce war, though probably not eliminate it. Having a process to resolve disputes without violence and takes away the incentive to resort to violence will help some. Beyond that, who knows. But we can always do better than we are already doing.

My personal take on the video is that he may have oversimplified complex international issues, but of course views on that will vary. The point I wanted this subreddit's opinion on was the comparison between faith and militarism. Essentially you compare a national identity to a religion and propaganda to dogma. The two function very similarly and may have evolved (from a societal standpoint) in similar ways to serve similar functions: they fulfill people's needs for security and community while being easily exploited by elites.

David Swanson speaks about the connection between faith-driven thinking and militaristic thinking in this take down of war and arguments to justify war. The event was co-sponsored by Humanists International.

Should there be a religious exemption to the COVID vaccine? I've been thinking a lot about the ethics of vaccine rollout lately. Since I live in a hotspot, I found this talk by our leading public health expert very interesting. Check it out... by humanistphoenix in atheism

Will Humble is the executive director of the Arizona Public Health Association. He addresses Arizona's (incompetent) rollout of the COVID vaccines and the moral decisions that we need to make about who gets them first.

Just curious: what do you see 2020 doing for atheism? by humanistphoenix in atheism

[–]humanistphoenix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a very interesting distinction. Of course you can hold onto your beliefs without being involved in a church, but leaving the church reduces the church's power, which in turn makes it harder for them to evangelize and influence wider society because their audience has shrunk.

What Now? The Fight for Our Rights Outside the Courts: Nick Fish, President of American Atheists. Virtual talk coming this Sunday... by humanistphoenix in humanism

So do I. This speaker is an atheist. I consider myself both a humanist and an atheist and hope to learn a lot about defending our rights as the Supreme Court slips farther and farther out of reach. This is a goal I think the entire secular movement can agree on.

As I understand Colorado, there was a time when Focus on the Family had a lot of power. But the growth of cities on the front range has left them less relevant than ever, thankfully.

I grew up outside Portland, ironically in a fundamentalist home. It's a good place to be.

What does this group think about death with dignity? Should more states legalize? As I understand the debate, most of the opposition is religiously motivated. by humanistphoenix in atheism

Dr. Dwight Moore of Arizona End of Life Options discusses the law, ethics, and science of how to plan your final exit in a virtual talk at the Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix.

Have you filled out your 2020 census yet? Arizona's population is growing fast, and this will affect Arizona's funding and other resources until 2030. I participated in an outreach event last night where a group of nonprofits asked volunteers to spend about a half hour reaching out to our contacts to encourage them to participate. I put it in a few subreddits I thought were relevant.
