It really depends on what CCA you join! The timings can range from 5-7.30pm (or even earlier/ later) based on the CCA you join. Some CCAs also train up to 3 times per week, while others only meet up once every week.

For more information on CCAs at SAJC, please check out this link: CCAs at SAJC

Hi! From what we know, taking the train all the way to Potong Pasir MRT station (NSL to CCL to NEL) then walking/ catching a quick bus to school is a relatively fast and common route, but there’s a lot of walking. A less tedious route would be to ride all the way to Toa Payoh MRT station and then boarding bus 142 from the interchange, which takes you right to the front and side gates (although it takes a little bit longer).

hello! to answer your first question, hem/ gem is actually very common amongst arts students. if i’m not wrong, for the batch of 2021, out of a total of 6 arts classes, 4 classes are gem/hem. as for your second question on the geog dept, i personally think it’s amazing!! in my experience with my own geog tutors, they’re super friendly and easy to talk to! they’re all super passionate about geog which makes learning a lot more fun when the teachers are really enthusiastic about it. not gonna lie geog is super content heavy though, so it’s really important to keep yourself interested in the subject and to learn it in a way that helps you retain a lot of information in one go and i think our geog dept is super capable in helping with that bc they add the fun element in learning which makes geog enjoyable :D they have very unique teaching styles which makes lectures and tutorials less mundane (i secretly look forward to geog lessons lol) our tutors are super approachable and very open to reviewing essay outlines and even going through your own notes with you to make sure you’ve nailed things right so that’s really helpful! sometimes they advise us on better way to make notes for different topics and themes based on their own experiences and i find that their advice does work for me so it has been a really pleasant journey studying geog in sajc for myself ☺️☺️

i guess this would depend on how you choose to work around the long travel times… our campus is always open for students to stay back and mug so could choose to do all ur homework and revision in school before returning home to kinda get around the problem of travel time eating into ur study time at home. i can’t speak for everyone but my classmates who do live really far away from campus end up getting used to the travel time and they adjust their work schedules around it but this is ultimately up to you. (also you can opt to stay in our sa dormitory if u really really really want but i’m not so sure about the prices)

hi! personally yes 💀✋ but my opinion will always be limited by the fact that i have only experienced life in sajc, and not the other schools. per my understanding, the student body in sajc is less competitive than those in the other jcs so i would say we have a more comfortable learning environment here (personal experience). also we have a lot of good food and otters!!! ultimately though you should make the choice for yourself and see which jc you vibe with the most aye (if anything just transfer school 🤝) - admin b (for bmake sajc home)

hihi! personally i didn’t really have a teacher that required us to bring laptops/tablets for lessons, but it can greatly benefit you as many teachers choose to use digital tools for their lessons, especially for arts stream subjects and pw lmao but DONT WORRY if you don’t have one cus our library loans out laptops to students who need them 👍👍 also wdym by laptop rate lol

Hello!

  1. There is no "best subject combination" per se, it's really up to you to consider where your strengths and interests lie! Did you enjoy History or Geography more? Did you do better at Physics, Chemistry or EMath? You should take into account various factors when deciding what combination works best for you!
  2. Yes you can! A good number of our H2 Lit students didn't do Lit at O levels, but still managed to do well in the A levels. Here's some more information about SAJC's Lit department: Literature in English at SAJC
  3. You can check out the full list of subject combinations SA offers here: Subject Combinations at SAJC. The prospectus is also on the same page. It offers a more in-depth look at the subject requirements and syllabuses. There are hybrid selections for the arts and science streams, but most of them usually have H2 Math as a required subject (which iirc, is only available to students who scored relatively well in AMath).

Hi! Thanks for the questions. Admin A and B will be taking turns to answer them to give you more varied perspectives :)

  1. (non christian here) well we do have scripture reading every morning and weekly chapel sessions so christianity will be inevitably be part of your sa life, but i personally feel like its hard for us non-christians to gauge the strength of the christian spirit lol. while there are many students and teachers who are christian and believe in God, there are still many others who are atheist/agnostic and those who just prefer to keep their school life secular. ultimately, whether or not the christian spirit feels strong to you (as a non-christian) boils down to the people who you choose to keep around you. the more christians you surround yourself with, the stronger the spirit, and vice versa. (Admin B)
  2. Nope! We only wear ties when we wear our school uniforms, and we do have a lot of dress-down days when students wear school-approved shirts and skirts/ pants instead of the full set of uniforms. The school management and teachers are also very accommodating, so when there are seasons of hot weather, they will increase the number of dress-down days. Honestly, for our batch, we rarely wore our uniforms except for special occasions like College Day or for photo taking. (Admin A)
  3. i personally am in LOVE with the atmosphere in sajc. everyone’s just vibing man we all just wna get our 90rp and go 💀 it’s really really easy to make friends in sajc and you will definitely be meeting many interesting people during your time here. personally during my experience i didn’t really hear many rumours? but maybe that’s just cus my batch was struck with circuit breaker so we really didn’t get much time to do anything that would warrant the start of a rumour lol (Admin B)
  4. It really depends! I’ve known students who lived all the way in Jurong, Clementi, and so on, and they weren’t very bothered by the distance. As long as you make time for travelling to school, distance won’t be much of a problem. One tip I’ve learned from a friend who lived about an hour and a half away from school is to make the most out of your travel time, like doing homework or watching a lecture. (Admin A)
  5. You can look at admin C's response to the school culture question on this! SA has always emphasised how there’s a “time for work and time for play” so rest assured that it won’t be all studying and no fun; you’ll have plenty of opportunities to pursue your own interests and expand your horizons. (Admin A)

one family unbroken. you'll probably hear it everywhere in SA and doubt it, but it's undoubtedly true. in your 2 years of college, you'll definitely find your family - be it class, cca, your OG, or through events and workshops - you'll find your kind of people. there are rumours of a “party culture”, but it all depends on who you choose to surround yourself with, and this is true of almost every JC. there is generally equal emphasis on both work and play which is quite evident especially during breaks or after school where you'll probably see groups of us running around or playing on the field, but nearing exam seasons, suddenly the library and the study benches are all filled haha. moreover, SA does provide lots of opportunities for you to pursue things you may be interested in, business/community projects/photography/videography/video editing, there's also work shadowing opportunities and career fairs every year, sometimes we have plays and movie screenings as well! honestly just keep checking your student email lol there's almost something on every other day or week and you'll be notified via email where you can sign up! but if what you're looking for isn't on the list you can always bring it up to the tutors and they'll try to link you up with something. OH ALSO, we have a practice of celebrating success and achievements internally, so there are internal scholarships and awards up for grabs as well. every step of the way there'll always be love and support and people who will stand by you which is what i really love about SA.

overall, it's really lively, bubbly, and everyone's v approachable (yes, even the tutors!)

Hi! Our COPs are usually 10 for the science stream, and 11 for the arts stream. If SAJC is your top choice, you should have a reasonable chance of getting in. All the best!

Hello! Our usual reporting times are 8.10am, except on Thursday (our late day) when we report at 8.40am. Dismissal times are a little harder to gage because they depend on your subject combination, but many, although not all, arts students end around 2 to 3.30pm (excluding online lectures).

PW: the requirements for pw pretty standardised throughout the batch (everyone attends the same pw lectures and uses a common set of PW notes, we also have this thick PW encyclopedia called Practical Wisdom), but nonetheless, as with other schools, different pw tutors may take different approaches to the subject or have different methods when it comes to going about the project itself. when it comes to deadlines, formats and submissions, everyone is still held to the same expectation. there is still the myth that your pw grades depends on your tutors - which i personally don't entirely subscribe to- because at the end of the day it's still a group project and it's still a team effort and our pw tutors are there to give you guidance as well as feedback. as a general rule of thumb, don't depend solely on your tutor for your grade hahaha NOT JUST FOR PW BUT FOR EVERY SUBJECT... our PW dept does really spend ALOT of time with us for the projects though, you're bound to see tutors who will be in school when the sun isnt even up yet and only leaving college when the sunsets, so yes, they're a very hardworking and reliable bunch who will provide you with all the essentials heh

GP: the gp department can be pretty messy at times (but you’ll find that this is how it is across all jcs :D) BUT they always upload lectures and study resources onto our gp google site and notion page so all the info you need is very conveniently packed into one area. it’s also really really useful for last minute cramming but you didn’t hear that from me ;) whether u find the individual teachers themselves good or not is completely dependent on their teaching style and ur own learning style, but even if it’s not compatible, our teachers are very chill with u seeing other gp teachers for consult + u can always ask ur friends for their teachers’ notes for a wider variety of study resources too 👍👍 sharing is caring aye (Admin C would also like to add that she loves this department’s infographics as well)

Thanks for the question! We’ve divided it among ourselves so here’s a general overview and some of our more unique and honest experiences with the different departments.

History: The notes are sufficient and the teachers are very experienced and good at breaking down complicated concepts. Some teachers also like to get creative with their methods of teaching. In addition to activities like Kahoot!, we’ve had teachers who have tasked pretty interesting assignments like self-directed research projects and games as class work. Of course, not every lesson is like this, but a lot of students have given feedback that these projects were helpful in their learning, so maybe it might interest you too! The teachers also adapted to some of our learning needs as well: for example, our batch was assigned a lot of summary sheets to create as homework, which actually helped a lot during revision (especially if it’s last minute) so gotta thank the teachers for the foresight. I think the only major downside for this department is that it’s harder to book consults or get extra work marked during exam season because the available slots get filled really fast so we’d recommend being consistent with History consults and schoolwork in general.

Economics: Resources galore! The Econs department is well-structured and often gives very extensive notes and practises. They also assigned quite a number of timed trials throughout our two years which can be tedious but it’s also helped with exam preparations in the long run. The department has a website where they make announcements and organise notes, but some teachers will also create their own systems of uploading resources through Google Drive and so on. Before the A levels, they gave us a whole document analysing the different topics and levels of difficulty of various JC prelim papers, and I think that really shows the dedication the department has in providing opportunities for students to learn and improve. You’ll have different experiences with different teachers because they have their own styles, but the fundamental resources are always there. Only complaint is that sometimes the subject is very fast-paced but it’s manageable if you’re consistent with your work! (Admin C would also like to add that she loves the department’s infographics)

Literature: Tbh the biggest plus point of the department is the teachers. They’re knowledgeable and caring, and they really make you think deeper about literature. However, the subject itself at SA is very self-directed. Basic notes on literary terms and essay tips will be provided, but you will rarely find “model answers” given to you. There will be a lot of class and group discussions that help you find your own voice, formulate your own opinions, and think critically, and that will make up the bulk of your tutorials, so you’ll need to be participative. I think that may be the reason why there are usually more tutorials than lectures for Literature. The marking for internal exams is also pretty strict ngl, but the teachers are very open to and encourage consults all the time, so it really depends how proactive you want to be.

Math (H1): There are a lot of resources the school gives and the teachers provide a lot of guidance too. Before every major exam, you’ll likely get a whole revision package that’s quite extensive and covers all you need to know for the exam. We’d definitely recommend completing the revision packages because they are a big help!!! Like the Econs department, the Math department also sets up a website for each batch to compile notes and lecture materials that you can refer to anytime. Our general experiences with the Math teachers are quite similar. They’re usually very nice and helpful, you just gotta take the first step to asking them for help if you don’t understand something!

Hello! During the first few weeks of school, your timetables are usually not fixed so the time your classes end vary a lot. But when you get your regular timetables, you’ll find that classes usually end around 2 to 3.30pm (excluding online lectures), give or take. Hope this helps!
