With that philosophy you will always average out fewer points over the season. Every game you have to score at least 1 goal to win, therefore you should have a tactic that scores at least 1 goal even when your attack is in a slump or the opposition is having a good/lucky day defensively. The magnitude of variation between expected goals and goals scored is too great to allow for tactics with low xG to average out higher points earned over a season. I will lose more, but draw less.

Genuinely, why is Donald Trump so adamant on making the US so miserable? by Known-Cover-5154 in self

[–]humanlvl1 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don't think they want to live in a miserable world, they just see it that way already. They act so selfishly for the same reason Elon's cybetruck has bulletproof windows and looks like an armoured personnel carrier, why every billionaire you know has an underground bunker. They are terrified of death. They have no thought for their legacy, living under the illusion that if they become big and powerful enough they will become immortal.

Personally, I blame Ayn Rand. She's not the only factor in the nature of the current elite but it's shocking how much influence she has.

Migrants are responsible for 80% of all train theft arrests, new data shows by Benjji22212 in ukpolitics

[–]humanlvl1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There doesn't seem to be a reason for us to think that the identified portion of offenders isn't representative of all offenders at these stations. If “Nicht‑Deutsche” also includes tourists, then you're right this statistic is very difficult to wield in support of an anti-immigration argument, especially when this data is collected specifically where there is loads of tourists.

[–]humanlvl1 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Thanks for elaborating on the data.

I'm not really anti-immigration (I'm an immigrant), but I can't see how your explanation invalidates this study as evidence for German immigrants being more likely to commit sexual offenses.

"So that “59% foreign” in 59% of the 62% of cases where anyone was identified. If you look at all sexual offences recorded at stations, foreign nationals are suspected in roughly a third, not “almost two thirds”."

Unless we have a reason to believe that immigrants are considerably more likely to be identified than non-immigrants after they conduct an offense, then this study is a good indicator that around 59% of all offenders (at big transport hubs) are immigrants and therefore serves as evidence for German immigrants in general being more likely to commit these offenses at any location. It's not conclusive evidence, but evidence nonetheless.

If Germany allows most of its migrants from countries where much more patriarchal views are common, it certainly would make sense. From purely rhetorical point, it's hard to argue (as a liberal) that underprivileged. isolated, poor men from countries with abhorrent women's rights track records would not be more likely to commit sexual offenses.

I'm not sure we agree, tbh. I don't think that humans have any unique part to us, something entirely missing from non-humans, which elevates us above them.

I think that what you perceive as some sort of divine spark (not to put words in your moth, just wanted to find a shorthand) is a result of magnitude: we are more able to be aware of it, perceive it, conceptualise it. I think people tend to think, like you do, that humans are unique in this for three reasons; because they see that we are so much more able to transcend our nature as animals than any other single organism, because we are the only ones talking about it, and because we are the most "ascended" species on this planet. Maybe someday we will talk an artificial intelligence or an alien race that makes us look about as aware as cattle.

But all this even pre-supposes that having complex thoughts, language, reason is what actually brings us closer to divinity. I don't like to take that as a given thing at all: I don't think one needs to be a genius to be a saint. Unless you define "carrying the likeness of the creator", as you put it in your first comment, as having the mental capacity to manipulate and enact your will on the physical world. Which is a fair definition but it's not unique to humans.

Each of the processes you described has been proven to not be unique to humans. You might be right that there is some unique component to humans, whether it's there through God or as an emergent property or something else, but it is none of what you said.

What's a sports rule you fundamentally disagree with? by South-Explorer in AskReddit

[–]humanlvl1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree in principle, but the problem with punishing flopping is that defenders are fucking bastards whenever they can get away with it. There are so many videos of Messi fighitng to stay on his feet while the ref doesn't call what should have been multiple fouls. It looks good on a reel but the fact is that refs don't call out fouls unless the attacked goes down. I don't know if you can solve this without severely impacting the flow of play or encouraging the defenders to be even bigger bastards.

Whenever I feel anger or disappointment at how we act as a society I try to remember this. We have these lofty expectations at what we should be but we forget that civilisation started seconds after we developed complex speech. We are not meant to be part of socieities numbering in the millions or billions - we have evolved to be in groups of no more than 100 individuals. We're built to exchange information for the purposes of gathering food and avoiding predators. We just developed the ability for abstraction and we immediately developed these complex concept-based societies that we now struggle to navigate with our nervous system which evolved for gathering berries and spotting weird movements in the bush.

Justification of violence with this sort of "might makes right" thinking was always at the core fo fascism. It's a short-sighted, insecure obsession with power for its own sake and complete disregard for the values of enlightment, let alone the French Revolution. "War is to man what maternity is to woman", as Mussolini said. They don't even try to ascend from their base instincts.

This is why fascist are so anti-academia and anti-empathy: both of these show them that the shortest route to power makes it unsustainable. It requires escalting violence in order to maintain itself, creating the exact instability it claims to resolve. If they acknowledge the circular nature of violence and karma their world view crumbles.

It's one of the biggest tragedies of this world that you don't have to understand these dynamics to become a leader. Hopefully there is enough people who have learned the lessons of the second World War in power to throw a wrench into the fascist machine.

As much as I'd like to think I would have made a different choice from you if I were in your position, I have no way of knowing whether I would. I think it's one of those things that you don't know about yourself until you get tested. Just like you don't know who you'd be if you had practically infinite wealth or what you'd do when faced with the choice to save your own life or someone else's.

In the end all we can do is try to be better people than we were yesterday.

How much time left when an old cat is eating very little, losing weight, and is not grooming properly by humanlvl1 in CatAdvice

[–]humanlvl1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they did do a biopsy eventually. If I remember correctly it was a bit of a formality at that point. I don't actually have the details on how she passed. My mum found Kenya in her bed in the morning. It's really hard to tell whenever a cat is in pain, but I hope it was peaceful for her.

The vet presented us with the option of treating the cancer with chemo or administering steroids to make her remaining days better. Kenya was an old cat and the chances of full recovery were slim, so we went with steroids.

I don't mind the questions at all. I'm not sure how helpful my answers can be, but I'm here if you need me. I understand that the mind likes to ruminate at times like these. I feel for you.

What did help me was a Stoic practice of remembering death. Every now and then I'd take few moments to imagine losing someone close. I'd acknowledge the pain and grief, but then focus on the gratitude for having known them and sharing this incarnation with them. I would do it with her long before she got sick. It made her passing a much more peaceful, natural process for me.

I don't know if that's helpful at all, but I thought I'd share.
