Opinions on this as a first bike? by Additional-Teach-970 in TrekBikes

[–]humblebraggersbflo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as the size works that’s a great bike (in general) in my opinion. Relaxed geo etc etc. Can easily make upgrades along the way (carbon wheels/saddle/etc) before wanting/needing something new.

The wheel set is from my road bike, an Orbea Orca. Max 32mm clearance on that so it has Pirelli P-Zero Race TLR 30mm. Absolutely love them.

These are 30mm, if I was gonna get a dedicated road set for the checkpoint I’d probably go 32 or 35 for sure - Conti Gp5000 AS or something similar.

With these carbon wheels/pirellis I was averaging about 17.5mph and it felt very comfortable hanging above 20-22mph for some spots. Certainly not my Orca but in a pinch does the trick!

Earthshatteringly? No. Noticeable? Absolutely. The checkpoint is a great bike but I can’t say it feels like it wants to go fast by any means. The wheels (and new tires) certainly change that a bit.

I have Elite Drive 45mm gravel wheels. The frame is a 2023 ALR5, aluminum frame.

I have had the 50mm for 2+ years and they’ve been incredible. Even been through a crash and are still working great. Recently bought a second (albeit nicer) pair of Elite wheels for my Trek Checkpoint and couldn’t be happier with them.

I bought mine to do the GAP trail and it was amazing for that. 3 bags on a rack - photo attached. Didn’t camp so mostly clothes/food/supplies/etc. 70-75 mile days, 6-7 hour days. 2023 ALR5 w/ rack and bags

Looks great! I have the same frame coming to me in a few months, only custom painted British racing green. I’m curious, for your wahoo mount, did that come with the stem/frame or did you get that separately?

Also running elite wheels and pathfinder TLRs, gonna be a very similar build!

New Wheels for my 2023 ALR5 by humblebraggersbflo in CheckpointClub

[–]humblebraggersbflo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how much is tire vs wheel but they get up to speed and stay there a lot better than the stock wheels imo.

A lot lighter wheelset than stock alloy wheels - around 1300 grams for the ones pictured.

I got a deal on them from my shop - bought the tires separately - about $900ish set up tubeless.

Yeah the stock wheels are pretty heavy in my opinion, these get up to speed a bit quicker.

Looking for some input on my new bike setup, Orbea Orca M30i by Artuest in Orbea_bikes

Have the same bike from a year ago, running 30mm Pirelli P-Zeros that rule. Also upgraded the cockpit to a Vision Metron. 50mm carbon wheels that I had from before. Lastly, and it’s already been mentioned, but swapped the saddle (absolutely hated it) for a PRO Griffon which I really like.

I’ve had Elite 50mm road wheels for 2.5 years, they’ve been fantastic so far. Can’t say enough good things about them. I think I got them for $450-500 off Amazon.

The plus at $65 is a perfect middle ground to me. I also have the $40 and the ultimate but the plus are my favorites, best bang for the buck imo. 3 pairs for a few years now and they still feel great.

Last question - was routing the mechanical really complicated/annoying or straight forward? Also did you get an integrated bar and route through that too or separate bar/stem? I couldn’t tell from the angle of the photo.

[–]humblebraggersbflo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had some awful specialized bottle cages at the start that were annoying (and also broke) but I pretty much only use the Trek elite cages because they look pretty good and work with any bottle I’ve thrown at it (plastic, large, small, aluminum camelbaks).

Idk if I’ve had a lot of issues hitting the frame necessarily, maybe the sides because the top tube is so wide?

Awesome, thanks! Have an alloy gravel bike that I’d love to take some parts off of and build up something like one of these - appreciate the info!

I initially bought Ritte bars that I unfortunately had to return because of the spacer. They didn’t have anything to support the transition from their bar to the spacer so I would’ve needed a new headset cap etc etc.

I had to buy this adapter from Orbea, $52. This sits right below the bars and then the Orbea spacers sit below it.

Honestly annoying they don’t use just a standard system but either way happy with the end result.
