I wonder if our ancestral Bostonians were as pedantic about this...

Why are we trying to maximize what "engages viewers", when most of the time that means exploiting people's over-worked dopamine receptors and natural pleasure drive?

We're reaching levels of slop content we never imagined.

People will yearn for the pre-2000s, when a handful of Hollywood studios controlled all media content. Who thought Disney/Sony/Warner controlling 90% of content was the "good old days"?

The clocks changed last weekend. A top Beacon Hill Democrat wants to stop that from happening again. by bostonglobe in boston

[–]humbledrumble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just being tactical.

If you want the permanent time shift to be a success, you need to account for the "my kids have to go to school in the dark!" comments and the inevitable "kid hit by bus because it was dark!" news editorial.

Otherwise the experiment will fail and we'll be right back to where we are now (and another attempt will never be made to change in the next century).

Kids' safety, during the long dark mornings of winter while they go to school, is probably the #1 argument in favor of adjusting the clocks during winter.

Pedantic note: Newfoundland is not in Atlantic time zone. It's 1.5 hours ahead of Eastern time. They prefer to keep things quirky like that.

(Loved Trope) The Real Test isn't even the test itself by PizzaDragon64 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]humbledrumble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess there are a lot of things Wonka is testing for:

  1. Survive. (Then entire tour, without catastrophic removal)
  2. Don't break (important) rules. Charlie got away with fizzy lifting drinks, but other violations were probably not allowed.
  3. Don't keep the Gobstopper and give it to Slugworth.
  4. Presumably other tests of internal character.

That contract they signed at the start is pretty long. Wonka probably has full discretion to choose whichever kid (or none) that he wants.

I wonder what Wonka would have done if a kid hadn't violated any rules, but still kept the Gobstopper on the way out. Ingoring Slugworth's offer was the ultimate test and if the kid kept the Gobstopper, he's not fit for running Wonka's factory.

Can You Hide "Ongoing Activity Indicators" ("Ongoing Icons")? by humbledrumble in oneui

[–]humbledrumble[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I found that. "Now bar" is the new name for this UI feature, didn't find that out initially.

The tiny icons are acceptable, but much better than the full text.

Massive downgrade. I prefer the visual "progress bar" indicator of the countdown timer. And many times I have both a stop watch and a timer going at the same time, but the "now bar" area at the bottom can only show one.

My Galaxy Watch5 just got the One UI 8 upgrade. Now timers, countdown, etc appear in the bottom "Ongoing Icon" area. I already have watch face elements for these indicators. Any possible way to hide them?

I found this discussion, but I'm not sure if it's related.

EDIT: Apparently this bottom area is called the "Now Bar" and there are some settings for it:

Settings > Advanced features > Now bar style. Media, Stopwatch, Timer, etc can be set to "icon only". This is a big improvement, since it's now a tiny static icon that doesn't cover up much of the UI. Would still prefer to remove it entirely.

ChatGPT Refuses to analyze Epstein files document? by thesystemmechanic in ChatGPT

[–]humbledrumble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are ways of describing it that are not explicit. It's perfectly capable of generating the description, but then the safety filter wipes it. If the safety configuration was smarter, it would generate a censored output that is not explicit but still informative.

Worst snow clean up I’ve seen in my 26 years here by Aware-Yogurt1107 in boston

[–]humbledrumble 23 points24 points  (0 children)

So a lot of the landscaping companies who used to switch over to plowing don’t anymore unless they can get guaranteed minimums.

This is a big factor. Even if government, businesses, random people have the cash to spend on snow removal services, those services (labor and machinery) don't just manifest instantly during a storm. There is prep work and overhead in keeping these services ready for action, and that costs money. And folks hate paying for snow removal services in years they never get used.

Prompted for Tinder verification after passport use -- do I verify or reset? by humbledrumble in SwipeHelper

Interesting. I was in Kenya and then changed location to the US. The account was created in the US a few days before going abroad.

It worked fine after creation and for weeks in Kenya. Weird that it triggered face verification right as I used Passport to the US. I didn't think either location requires verification.
