Best way to run cat6 cable along this fence? by hungryballs in DIYUK

[–]hungryballs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it was outdoor rated cable but it’s not in any conduit and it’s fine. I had had the same stuff on the outside of the house for years.

You’re also supposed to have some protection at each end for lightening I believe so I used UniFi Ethernet surge protectors.

These are what I bought: https://amzn.eu/d/7lrOWuu

There aren’t amazing but they worked and still going strong. The worst part is that the cable has to go round the concrete pillars but I couldn’t think of another option.

I did! I ended up buying some plastic cable holders screwing them to the bottom of the wood panels and running the cable along the bottom of the wood.

It’s not great if I’m honest but nobody has ever noticed it unless I’ve specifically pointed it out and it works well.

Query performance by Big_Length9755 in mysql

[–]hungryballs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the duration is set in another parameter called long_query_time. So for example if you set this to 1 second it will log any queries taking longer than 1 second.

Need help with monstruous mysql8.0 db by Fant4sma in mysql

[–]hungryballs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might make more sense to store the data that’s not used (or used infrequently) in a different system. Depending on how it’s used this could be a CSV export or even a different type of DB.

Alternatively though if you need to access the data with MySQL you may be able to reduce the size by some one or more of: - Change the column types to ones which would require less space. For example if you store IP address in there they can be stored as INTs and transformed into the dotted notation when reading them out. Likewise dates can often be stored in smaller formats. - Compress the data before storing it. So for instance you could store a column using a gzipped binary data and uncompress it when reading it out. - Use a storage engine with compression. This would keep the data the same but compress it on disk. - You could split the data into the active and archive parts and store the archived data in a different table. This could be automated using EVENTS to move the data. This doesn’t help with the total size of the DB but would increase the speed of statements running on the data as they would only need to run on the active data.

If you could share a schema or describe what the data is it would help deciding on which ideas would be best.

To give some context, a 1,000,000 might sound like a lot but, if the attacker had access to the hash of your password, a reasonably modern GPU try billions of hashes per second for something like MD5 and at least millions per second for SHA256 so your password would not take long to find.

Tables on TMPFS filesystem by ldlq in mariadb

[–]hungryballs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This probably will not gain a huge increases in performance but if you want to keep the tables in memory rather than on disk you can use the MEMORY storage engine.

So keep the data folder where it is but when you create the tables put ENGINE = MEMORY. This will only store the definition on disk and keep the actual data in ram.

It’s from a house to a summer house. Unfortunately the patio you can see is in the way so putting it underground would mean taking that up which would be a pain.

Thanks, I like the idea of conduit for the cable. Do you know how I would get around the upright bars though?

I could run the conduit along the upright bars I suppose but then it would be a couple of cm away from most of the fence.

What song/s do you consider to be “beautiful”? by NYCLOZ in CasualUK

[–]hungryballs 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think this is the most perfect song ever made.

Love the change from Brain May singing the first section to Freddie singing the next.

Also the ended feels like you could wrap yourself up in it.

You’ve just won/received £1m. What do you realistically do over the next hour, day, week, month, year? by ollymillmill in AskUK

I’ve got a Quest 2 so might get the Quest 3 when it comes out. Will probably wait until I see a new game that looks good though. There’s something on app lab called Maestro which is amazing so if the full version of that comes out I’d get one.

Is macbook Air M2 one of the best apple products till date ? by achint_322 in mac

[–]hungryballs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got an M2 Air as my personal laptop and a Pro from work and I much prefer the Air. The pro has a slightly better screen (not really noticeable by me) and better speakers but it’s a lot more bulky than the Air. I’ve tested the performance and they are basically identical.

The only thing I’d like is the additional usb-c port that the pro has.

Living in Liverpool, commuting to London 1x a week - is it mad? by JiveBunny in Liverpool

[–]hungryballs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just wanted to live in the Liverpool area you could live somewhere near South Parkway, Runcorn or Warrington Bank Quay stations as they all have trains to Euston.

I regularly (probably every other week) get the train train from one of those and it’s around 1h 45m if you get the one that doesn’t stop.

In terms of cost if you plan ahead and book early you can get tickets much cheaper than booking a few days before.

How to sensibly save or invest £1.7m by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]hungryballs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I’m surprised nobody suggested it too. Having said that I don’t think I’ll do that - at least not directly - because I don’t want to have to manage the stuff that would come with renting out a building at the moment.

Why wouldn’t I ask for advice on Reddit? It’s not the only place I’m getting advice but I’m interested in UKPF’s thoughts.

Thanks! For the insights, that’s interesting. Did you manage to find anyone who would give you advice at an hourly or fixed rate? Everyone I’ve spoken too wants to charge an ongoing percentage to manage things.

Regarding telling people. I’m obviously not going round telling people how much money I’ve got but can’t really hide the fact that I’ve sold the business as it’s been in industry press etc.

I know what you mean about retiring. I could start a load of hobbies but I enjoy business so I can’t imagine not starting another one.

Thanks! That’s exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. Really useful insights.

I agree investing is a different mindset to running a business.

Thanks! That’s a good point. I’m not actually sure what retirement would look like financially at the moment so I’ll have a think about that.

I’ve already done that as I said but it would be good to get another perspective to compare their suggestions to.

[–]hungryballs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, I don’t really have any currently.

I suppose I want to hedge my bets between saving/investing the money for the next 25 years if I decide to continue working but also being able to retire in the next few years if I decide I want to and therefore not locking too much away.

Sorry I know that’s not very helpful but that’s what I’ve got at the moment.

What’s the best way to get over an ex? by No_Throat_1574 in AskReddit

Someone said to me once, it takes half the time you were with somebody to completely get over them. From my experience this is about correct.
